About Program
CFHI’s Costa Rica programs, offered in partnership with ICDS, provide immersive, interdisciplinary learning experiences that combine academics, community engagement, and cultural immersion. Designed for students interested in global health, sustainability, Spanish language, and social justice, these programs foster a deeper understanding of the complex social, environmental, and cultural factors that shape health and development in Latin America.
Program options include Health Care in Latin America, a semester program exploring healthcare systems and public health; Spanish and Health in Latin America, a 4-week program combining Spanish for health sciences with regional health learning; Spanish and Sustainability Practices, focused on sustainability, food security, and community-based learning; and Sustainable Development and Social Justice in Latin America, which examines equity, development, and social change through an experiential Latin American lens.

Popular Programs
An interdisciplinary program that combines Spanish-language instruction with exploration of sustainability, environmental stewardship, and community development. Participants examine how Costa Rica’s sustainability initiatives intersect with public health while building language proficiency through immersive cultural experiences.
A multidisciplinary program focused on the social, economic, and environmental factors that shape health and development across Latin America. Through coursework, field experiences, and community engagement, participants gain a deeper understanding of sustainable development, social justice, and regional public health issues.
A semester-long academic program that combines coursework, community engagement, and experiential learning to explore Costa Rica’s healthcare system and regional public health challenges. Students strengthen their Spanish, participate in field visits and community-based experiences, and, for advanced speakers, may engage in clinical observation.
A four-week immersive program integrating Spanish-language learning with global health education. Participants develop healthcare-focused Spanish skills while exploring Costa Rica’s health system through coursework, community engagement, and, for advanced Spanish speakers, clinical observation opportunities.
