Work-life balance

When I saw GVI's ad in between my Instagram stories, I got hooked onto them mentioning that they help recent graduates land careers in conservation and going to different countries. I was all ready to do an in-person internship until the loves of my life both got sick. I was so scared to leave them, but my value was still dropping. Then, I remembered there was the option to work from home. I did a remote internship so that I could get some net worth and obtain new skills, while still being with the loves of my life in their final moments.

The remote internship came with classes from Richmond University. The classes that were assigned to me were Wildlife Conservation and Careers in Sustainable Development. The material was easy to follow along with and the lecture speakers were really engaging. In Wildlife Conservation, there were more conservation success stories shared than what I read in my classes at college. Those success stories provided in this course gave me hope that human-nature cooperation is possible and that fueled me further in that direction. I got a certificate of competition from them. In Sustainable Careers, I learned many valuable skills like recognizing my values and writing monthly blogs on my LinkedIn page. Even though I finished that course, I didn't get receive my competition certification from them.

My projects were engaging and my internship manager was extremely helpful with teaching me how to do what I needed to do for each project. Each project lasted 8 weeks and there were 2 meetings with each awesome project manager. Even though I was unsuccessful with landing a job with any of them, I took each opportunity with them to network myself and share my availability. One of those project managers wrote a very positive performance review.

While I was in my remote internship, it didn't compromise my current job in any way, I was able to go to my best friend's wedding, I was able to hang out with other friends, and I got to make the most of the rest of my time with the loves of my life before I got to hold them when they passed on.

I would recommend going on a GVI experience at whatever point someone is at in their life. They have programs for everyone. I learned there is no career guarantee and that I don't get all my certifications, but the chance to learn valuable skills and meet like-minded people is worth it.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing I did was that I used the GVI learning cards I made on Canva to teach my former friends English. I taught them how to say the status of my animals - least threatened, vulnerable, endangered, and critically endangered. When they were proficient with those words that I wrote in the biggest text, I taught them to say Joker and the names of the animals - loggerhead sea turtle, Amazon river dolphin, jaguar, Cape penguin, black rhino, and Asian elephant.
Pros
  • I got to meet like-minded people
  • My internship manager and the partner managers were all very helpful
  • There were class courses that came free with the internship
Cons
  • I didn't get a career from any of my partner organizations
  • I still didn't get my certificate of completion for one of my classes, even though I finished both
  • I still didn't get my performance reviews from my last 2 partner organizations

Opportunity of a lifetime!

The work was really clearly set out from the beginning. With great support and an encouraging and welcoming environment, I was able to complete my program successfully at my own pace and help others as a result. My supervisor played an especially pivotal part in my experience as she definitely made the program a smooth experience. The perfect opportunity for those in gap years or if you’re looking for a career break! Not only does the programme offer the experience but masterclasses, workshops, and online courses.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would do an in-person volunteering programme. I’d love to see the impact in real life.

A Truly Wonderful Experience!

My experience with GVI was absolutely amazing! Being given the opportunity to make a difference from afar and seeing the impact my efforts make in wildlife conservation was an incredible experience (and one I will surely not forget anytime soon!) I cannot recommend GVI more, from the community feel, to the dedication of the people there willing to offer input into any questions you may have, it is truly such a lovely environment. The learning material is also very direct and easy to follow while still offering valuable information in regards to the program. I would highly, highly recommend their program and will surely be taking another adventure soon! Thank you tons!

Excellent Learning Opportunity

My time as a climate crisis and clean energy intern was such an excellent opportunity. I really wanted to gain experience in my field, firstly to know what working in conservation/ clean energy would really be like, and also to add to my CV for university applications. Since it was virtual, I wasn't sure what kind of work I would be doing, or how useful it would be. Fortunately, my project was something I am genuinely interested in that made a concrete difference; I made a cost benefit analysis for switching a conservation hub in Thailand to solar energy, which included designing the system best suited for the area. I learned a lot and my mentor, Bex, was so supportive and helpful. I would absolutely recommend this for someone wanting to explore their chosen field and make a difference.

Pros
  • Supportive mentors
  • Educational, good for research

GVI Virtual Internship!

I was able to complete a virtual internship these past two months with GVI and I'm so glad I did. I was able to work with a charity in the field of Marine Conservation, which I want to go into and so this was an incredible opportunity that I would never have gotten otherwise. The charity I was able to work with really fit well with my career and personal goals, so it was amazing to be able to work with a group focusing on something I'm really passionate about, The communication and support I got from my GVI supervisors was great, I would 100% recommend!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I definitely didn't think I would be working with a shark charity group, so that was very surprising and definitely a great experience!

100% would recommend

I have just completed the Wildlife Conservation virtual Internship which included a course in careers in sustainable development and wildlife conservation. I was partnered with an organisation in Laos who are creating an education centre about the illegal wildlife trade. My group and I got to work with the organisation through zoom meetings and did research and created resources for them to use in the centre. I really learnt a lot on this course, not only about conservation but also about Laos and the culture there, careers advice and also about myself. It’s great because you know you are making a difference to the organisations you are helping.

I would really recommend this program especially to those starting out in conservation but also to those looking for a career change or even those who would just like to make a difference! I can’t wait to join another program in the future.

Loved it !

I am so glad I did the Wildlife Conservation Virtual Internship with GVI. I received constant support from my supervisor and had the opportunity to meet a lot of people and work with amazing partners from Seychelles and South Africa.
By working on 2 different projects, I truly felt that I was being useful to the partners and that my work would help make an impact on conservation.
I have definitely learnt a lot from this experience and I can not wait to join a volunteer programme with GVI soon !

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
When I first discovered the project that I was gonna be working on and all the data I had to analyse, which I had never done before, I felt overhelmed. But with the constant reassuring and help from my supervisor, I managed to overcome it

Excellent and diverse program

I really enjoyed my 4 week virtual internship in Wildlife Conservation. I am currently off work and wanted to get involved with some hands on volunteering during my time off. Unfortunately due to Covid I could not travel, so I opted for the virtual internship instead.

The program really did exceed expectations! I got involved with two really interesting projects with two different charities. It was great to meet first hand (via zoom!) with the owners and staff working for these charities and my intern supervisor was always on hand to provide strong support throughout. The projects were really rewarding, knowing that the work that you were doing was helping to support the charities.

Aside from the projects I also completed two online courses that were provided with the internship, these were very interesting and had a good mix of reading, videos, quizzes and activities. Another highlight for me were the masterclasses provided every two weeks, where an industry expert would give a talk on their subject area. These were extremely interesting and it was great be able to ask them questions!

Other benefits of the program included networking events where you had an opportunity to meet with other volunteers and discuss current world topics. And last but not least, the careers workshops which provided useful information on how to find your ideal career and were also ran interactively.

As you can see the internship isn't simply just doing some work for a charity, it includes a lot of resources and the majority of it is ran interactively which is a huge benefit as it is more personalised to you! Not only is what your doing rewarding because you are contributing to the greater good, but you will also gain a lot of personal development from the program!

What would you improve about this program?
Meeting with the charity partners as soon as possible. The project brief is great to get you stared, but you really understand the needs and requirements in more depth once you have spoken directly with the charities.
