Guaranteed Internship: As part of the AIFS Abroad program you are guaranteed an internship in your host city. We do our best to tailor your internship to match your background and future goals.
Personalized Attention: We want this experience to be as fulfilling as possible. From the first phone call, we support you and give you all the resources you need to make sure your internship is a success.
Centralized Housing: You’ll be living in student accommodations centrally located in Washington, DC with other AIFS Abroad interns. Your housing will have access to public transportation, ensuring it is easy to get to and from your internship.

I thoroughly enjoyed my internship in DC in Summer 2012. We were situated in the heart of DC, Foggy Bottom, 10 minutes away from the White House! We were staying in student housing so you got to meet a range of people, all of whom were undertaking internships as well!
The transport system is great to get around the city, the metro is so easy! My daily trip down to Capital South would take me about 20 minutes including my usual morning trip to Starbucks. There is so much to do in DC and after being there a week it really will start to feel like home! I would recommend Global Experiences, they really listen to what you want to do, but it is your internship and only you can make the most of your 8 weeks!

What would you improve about this program?

I would be more realistic about what I want to do, and would try and work within Congress although being British this is difficult to come by. I would recommend that the individual thinks hard before giving their final choices to their representative as you don't want any regrets.

How old do you have to be to start/go?

Hi Faith! You can enroll in the program before you turn 18 but you must be 18 by the start date of your chosen program. 18 is the minimum age to participate in a program. Hope that this helps!

Why did you choose this program?

I chose this program because it had a reasonable balance of work and play. I was able to have fun, while still developing the skills and tools I needed in the workforce. I liked that there was always something to do, outside of working, in the city. Although the overall DC culture places great emphasis on professionalism, a lot of individuals love to get out and have a good time. This program reflected that balance.

What did your program provider assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

Global Experiences assisted with career readiness (interview prep, resume building, etc.), provided details about the culture one is being immersed into, Visa assistance, and provide support and answers to any questions i had. I never felt alone or i didn't have enough support to help me succeed while working abroad. If one person did not know the answer I've always been redirected to someone who could provide me with the assistance I needed.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

My biggest advice is to be open minded. Saying yes to an opportunity whether it's going out to an event, meeting new people, traveling somewhere new is allowing yourself to step out of your comfort zone. Saying yes to a happy hour is so beneficial, you never know how that individual can help you along the way. Turning down too many opportunities is something I regretted. It may be scary at first to go out into an unfamiliar city but you’ll never regret it.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

An average week in the program is going to your placement during the week and on the weekends the interns will go on a small trip or go to an event or activity in the city, and there was always something to do! So many options.

The coordinators check in every week and it’s comforting to know that you have a support system in the city you aren’t familiar with.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

My biggest fear was asking for help in any way. I was so scared to admit if I messed up or got lost or didn't know how to do something and being judged for it. But I learned quickly that not everyone has all the answers and it’s okay to mess up and ask for assistance. It’s better to ask and get the help I need than struggle. It allowed me to become more resilient and a grew a lot of patience for things that were different from back home or things I didn't understand. Always ask for help.

Is there any other advice you'd like to share with prospective travelers?

A last bit of advice would be:

Pay attention to your surroundings, it will help you blend in with the culture, understand social cues, and learn how people interact with one another.
Don’t get too frustrated if things aren’t going the way as planned. Just take it day by day. Things will naturally iron itself out. Solutions will come to you.

Did YOU intern abroad?! If so, where and what inspired you to go?

I interned in London in 2013. I had just graduated college with a degree in history and a certificate to teach. I wasn’t quite sure what career path I wanted to go down so I figured an internship would be a good option for me. It also allowed me to travel which is one of my passions. I interned in an international school and was able to see the administration side of how things work in a school. I had a very hands on role and had the opportunity to work with the students and the teachers directly.

What is your favorite intern abroad memory?

My favorite memory from my time interning abroad was when a woman on the street asked me for directions and I knew exactly where to tell her to go. I had just exited the tube station and she approached me asking how to get to a road. I directed her and watched her go on her way, meanwhile I was beaming the entire walk home. I felt so proud that I was able to answer her inquiry correctly and it was the first time that London really felt like my home.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

I think that the biggest factor in being a successful company is believing in your product. Here at Global Experiences we have all interned or lived abroad and it changed our lives. We want to help others to have the same life changing experiences that we have had. We understand the importance of traveling outside of your comfort zone and the wonderful benefits that can come from it.

What country have you always wanted to visit?

I’ve always wanted to visit Australia. I love the outdoors and the ocean especially and think that it would be an amazing experience! Everyone that I know who has visited Australia has nothing but wonderful things to say about it. Ever since the 2000 summer Olympics in Sydney I have been really interested in the Australian culture so I would love to observe it first-hand!
