Alumni Spotlight: Isabela Magalhaes

Isabela Magalhaes is a third-year college student in Claremont, California and worked at a non-profit in London called Dance United for 8 weeks this summer. She is originally from Brazil, enjoys traveling and any thrill-seeking activities.

Why did you decide to intern with The Intern Group in London?

Isabela: I picked London sort of randomly, I had never been before and British culture has always fascinated me. I stumbled upon Intern London after many Internet searches; what distinguished Intern London from all the other programs was the cost advantage. For a very reasonable price, I would get not only get the connection to an internship in an area of my choice (I was interested in the non-profit sector) but also guaranteed housing, tours of London, and multiple trips throughout Europe!

Describe your day to day activities as an intern.

Isabela: I would walk into the office and touch base with my colleagues, usually my supervisors. After we would update each other on our progress of event-planning, I would work from my computer. I would do things like research, type up documents, and lots of communicating via e-mail. On some days I would go down to the dance studio and help with supervision of the program, which was always extremely enjoyable.

What made this experience unique and special?

Isabela: It was many firsts for me: first time living alone away from my family, first time working a stable, full-time job at an office, and first time I felt like an independent adult.

How has this experience impacted your future?

Isabela: Professionally, I saw how important it is for me to have a positive, relaxed work environment. I was lucky enough to come across a very close-knit group of people whose passion and loyalty was almost palpable in their work. They made even the most mundane tasks not just doable but enjoyable by expressing genuine support for each other. I know now that this happy, familial work environment does exist. This internship has provided me with the essential criteria for my future workplace environment.
