General Studies Program:
The General Studies Program is an intensive, three-year long pre-undergraduate program at Asian University for Women, and will be exclusively geared towards matriculating students recruited from Afghanistan and diasporic Rohingya refugee communities into the University’s undergraduate program. AUW’s undergraduate program is an English-medium, American-style liberal arts and sciences program, with a focus on achieving outstanding academic scholarship, devotion to public service, and exemplary leadership. AUW recruits students who demonstrate courage, outrage at injustice, and deep compassion for those who may be powerless.

The focus of the General Studies Program is to develop students’ training in English (and other basic fields). A core curriculum that includes English, Math and Statistics, Environmental Sciences and Computer Sciences delivered over three years helps advance these students into matriculating into the university. A set of British secondary school qualifications are required for student transition into the university.

Job Description

AUW is seeking dedicated English as A Second Language Instructors (as well as math and statistics instructors) to assist in the development of language skills of the students.

Highly motivated graduates of reputable global universities are invited to apply. Appropriate training will be provided at the initiation of employment. A deep sense to dedication to the the mission of AUW and an unalloyed orientation to service are necessary. Instructors typically work with groups of 15 students throughout.

Core Responsibilities:
• Teach students English as a second language 18-20 hours per week, with emphasis in listening, speaking, and writing, and using
communicative classroom learning techniques.
• Demonstrate flexibility and versatility in teaching assignments, based on program need.
• Follow an established curriculum for English language teaching with the flexibility to suit student needs.
• Coordinate with the Program Department to ensure a consistent pedagogical approach
• Align course objectives for assigned courses with established student learning objectives (SLO).
• Create syllabi for assigned courses, including standard university policy messages.
• Create lesson plans using established program materials (textbooks, supplemental materials, etc.) for assigned courses.
• Deliver courses per established course schedule in the assigned location.
• Grade homework, in-class work, and assessments and return all materials to students in a timely manner with constructive feedback.
• Create and proctor mid-term and final assessments for all assigned courses to assess language learning progress, following program-specific
assessment standardization requirements.
• Hold three office hours per week to connect with students individually about questions, concerns, and interests.
• Meet deadlines for turning in all required information (grades, attendance, comments, etc.).
• Participate in curriculum, assessment, and materials, as related to classes being taught.
• Participate in program and team meetings as scheduled.
• Share supplementary materials created for assigned courses with colleagues and store in designated collaborative online workspaces using
standardized naming conventions for consistency.
• Support students with IETLS test preparation, with a minimum target IETLS score of 7.0
• Ensure University rules and regulations, including academic honesty and non-discrimination policies, are upheld and respected.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Preferred Qualifications and Experience (but NOT REQUIRED):
• Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics/TESOL or closely related field or CELTA/DELTA certificate
• Experience teaching or tutoring, particularly in English or in multicultural environments
• Experience in using a variety of approaches to teach English: communicative language methodology, content-based instruction, task-based
instruction, and skills-based instruction
• Interest in international education, women’s empowerment, or working in Asia preferred
• Proficiency with a second language such as Farsi, Bangla, or Burmese is an advantage, but not required

Compensation:
Instructors will receive a stipend of $1000 per month, free room and board in a shared semi-furnished apartment, and free local transportation to and from the university.
