Wonderful Study Abroad Experience

My experience abroad was life-changing. My classes at Maastricht University were engaging and captivating, I've made lifelong friends, and the small-city environment is very welcoming to outsiders. Not only do you get the cultural immersion without too much tourism, but you are welcomed with open arms into the community. The staff are incredibly helpful, and the diversity of the people included is fantastic. I made friends from many countries, and expanded my understanding of different cultures.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Coming in, I was nervous that I wouldn't be able to make many friends or have a good social life. However, once the plane landed, I immediately met up with the group and made lasting friends! I found my anxiety was unfounded as it was really easy to make friends while there.
Pros
  • Expanded Perspective
  • Welcoming Community
  • Enjoyment in every day
Cons
  • Far away from home
  • Culture Shock
  • Uncertainty about experience

Inside and outside of the classroom

It can be said that what I learned this time was not only in class, but also outside of class. In class, for the first time, I really exchanged ideas with classmates from the United States and completed group assignments together. Outside of class, I became good friends with many of them. Even though they have returned to the United States now, we still keep in touch. Maybe it’s because I have lived in Shanghai since I was a child, and most of my good friends are still in Shanghai. Before, I only had a vague concept of the word "parting". But this time, I finally felt that some partings may mean that it will be difficult to meet in the future. Sadness and regret are inevitable. But I feel lucky enough to meet them and become friends.

In addition, since I am a student majoring in Dutch, I have also had a preliminary understanding of the Netherlands in these nearly two months of life. I know how to buy train tickets, how to rent a bicycle, and how to find fresh herring. The accumulation of this kind of daily life experience will be of great help to my one-year study abroad life in the Netherlands, because I returned to the Netherlands on August 20, 2024, just two weeks later, and started a new round of study abroad life.

There are definitely some difficulties. In a strange country, when I really start to live independently for the first time, many unexpected things will naturally happen one after another. For example, I don’t know where I put my student card, I don’t know how to apply for traffic, I don’t know how to open a Dutch bank account, etc. However, the reason why people can grow is because they encounter various difficulties and eventually overcome them. I did it. Looking back, these difficulties have also become part of my beautiful memories.

Regarding suggestions and opinions, I sincerely hope that the Excellence Academy can continue this summer program. I really gained a lot, and I believe that everyone will also gain a lot.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Trying the raw herring for the first time!
Pros
  • Making friends
  • Experiencing new culture

10 out of 10, Would Recommend

This study abroad experience gave me the opportunity to immerse in what Dutch culture is like. I got to try famous foods, learn some phrases, and talk with individuals who have lived in Maastricht their whole life. The entire CES team was so friendly, and welcoming to our group, and they always gave us the opportunity to freely ask questions. I got to experience Maastricht culture as well as explore outside of the city. Through CES we were able to take trips to other surrounding cities as well as other countries. This experience really opened the door for me to continue to travel outside of study aboard as well as gave me insight on what it looks like to study at a Dutch university. I enjoyed every moment of my program and would highly recommend it to anyone interested.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would loved to have had more time to spend in Maastricht! I am so grateful we got to do all of our field trips, but I also would loved to have spent more time in the home city too. With that, the program left more fun opportunities for me to come back and visit another time too.
Pros
  • The CES staff is super friendly and caring
Cons
  • The program length is quick and rushes by

A wonderful experience!

I’m so glad I chose to study with CES Maastricht! The professors were so kind and helpful in explaining the material. The classes were more discussion based than I was used to, which made the material much more engaging.

Maastricht is a beautiful city and great for student life. Because it is so conveniently located, I was able to travel to many other countries and cities too.

The group trips CES coordinated for us were extremely well run, and it was very apparent that the CES staff really care that every student has a positive experience here. Thanks to their efforts and support, my time in Maastricht was truly a once in a lifetime experience!

My CES academic program has been challenging but also fun and rewarding. I have learned so much through both travel as well as new and interesting courses I may not have otherwise had the opportunity to take. The CES staff has helped me with every question I have had during the study abroad process. They have made Maastricht an inviting and safe place for studying abroad. My study abroad experience has been full of meeting new people and making lifelong friendships I never new I would have. It has also been about learning about many new cultures and and visiting countless cities and countries that I have loved experiencing.

The faculty of psychology and neuroscience is one that continuously challenges me to go above and beyond. I feel pushed to apply myself constantly and am so grateful to be a part of this program.

CEStastic program :)

In the international relations program you get to take classes relating to interesting topics in the European Union and they always include a field trip to somewhere in the EU. I went to the European Parliament in Brussels for one course and had lots of fun!
Also, the CES staff were the first ones to welcome us into the Netherlands, meeting us in the Schipol airport. They’ve continued to be friendly faces and a good support system throughout the past few months too!
Something really cool about my time abroad is that I’ve gone to wayyy more countries than I ever had before, and I’ve made some great friends too! I would do it all again if I could :)

Pros
  • Student city
  • Safe
  • Easy to travel
Cons
  • Can be a little expensive
  • Choosing to fly out of Charleroi

The most formative time ❤️

The humanities program allowed for me to gain vast knowledge about European society and learn how similar the US is. Some classes I took that fall into this knowledge are a Nazi Literature class and an After Babel. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the most helpful group of friendly people I have ever had contact with. They were more than willing to answer all and any questions I had and wanted to make my trip the best it could be. From them I was able to grow. Through living in a different country with a different culture, this has been the most formative experience I’ve had in my lifetime. I grew as a student as well as an individual

Pros
  • Knowledge
  • Travel
  • Fun
Cons
  • Plateaus
  • Bus Fair
  • Can be expensive
