About Program

In 1992 the Maastricht Treaty led to the creation of the European Union (EU) with its motto “Unity in Diversity”, but what is
European identity? How do the shared lessons of the past teach us about the continent’s contemporary challenges and future direction? These questions are at the heart of European culture and society and demand consensus and collaboration, born out of centuries of division and conflict.

Your adventure begins with a study trip to Berlin. Besides that, there are two cultural day/weekends trips included too that will take you to several cities in the Netherlands and to Paris.

This program is currently not being promoted on Go Overseas by its provider. Check with CES Maastricht University for the most up-to-date information regarding the status of this program.

A wonderful experience!

I’m so glad I chose to study with CES Maastricht! The professors were so kind and helpful in explaining the material. The classes were more discussion based than I was used to, which made the material much more engaging.

Maastricht is a beautiful city and great for student life. Because it is so conveniently located, I was able to travel to many other countries and cities too.

The group trips CES coordinated for us were extremely well run, and it was very apparent that the CES staff really care that every student has a positive experience here. Thanks to their efforts and support, my time in Maastricht was truly a once in a lifetime experience!

CES Maastricht University

My CES academic program has been challenging but also fun and rewarding. I have learned so much through both travel as well as new and interesting courses I may not have otherwise had the opportunity to take. The CES staff has helped me with every question I have had during the study abroad process. They have made Maastricht an inviting and safe place for studying abroad. My study abroad experience has been full of meeting new people and making lifelong friendships I never new I would have. It has also been about learning about many new cultures and and visiting countless cities and countries that I have loved experiencing.

Pros
  • Easy for traveling
  • Meeting new people

The most formative time ❤️

The humanities program allowed for me to gain vast knowledge about European society and learn how similar the US is. Some classes I took that fall into this knowledge are a Nazi Literature class and an After Babel. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the most helpful group of friendly people I have ever had contact with. They were more than willing to answer all and any questions I had and wanted to make my trip the best it could be. From them I was able to grow. Through living in a different country with a different culture, this has been the most formative experience I’ve had in my lifetime. I grew as a student as well as an individual

Pros
  • Knowledge
  • Travel
  • Fun
Cons
  • Plateaus
  • Bus Fair
  • Can be expensive

Maastricht is the best!

The Humanities and Social Sciences program lets me take classes about culture, sociology, literature, world events, and more. I am exposed to lots of new ideas, beliefs, and concepts which help me better analyze my world.

The CES staff are your guides through UM and Maastricht. They will help you with everything from academics to travel advice, and are always available whenever you have questions.

Being able to travel, meet new people, and explore new places are some of the best parts of my study abroad experience. It’s amazing how much experience you can gain from being in a new place and studying among different people!

Pros
  • Easy to travel
  • Safe
  • Welcoming to international people
Cons
  • Unpredictable weather

Spring 2019!

The History, Arts, and Culture program at Maastricht University has challenged me and the way I think. It has presented me with opportunities to go beyond the factual aspects of Art History and the skills to delve into art theory, allowing me to think deeper not only about the art itself, but also the artist as an individual.

In addition, CES is and has been nothing short of outstanding! In the time that I’ve been in Maastricht and even the time leading up to my departure, the CES staff have been responsive, supportive, and beyond helpful!

Overall, I cannot say enough positive things about my experiences here! I have had the chance to absorb not only the art in Europe, but I have also been able to experience cultures, gorgeous scenery, and meet incredible people.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-racking thing was taking the initial step coming here. I was completely and entirely terrified. But, as soon as I got to Maastricht, I felt as if I was meant to be here!

Simply Ideal

Studying with CES Maastricht as a part of the European History, Culture & Arts program was the exact study abroad experience I was looking for and the most incredible experience of my life. In the classroom, I spent the semester reading, learning and discussing Dutch literature and art. But CES makes sure to bring students outside of the classroom to see and experience the Netherlands and Europe for ourselves, taking us to tour different cities while visiting art and history museums. While living in Maastricht, I truly felt that I was a part of the city while going grocery shopping, stopping for frites or going out at night. Maastricht's central location also allowed for easy travel, taking me to places I had only ever dreamed over. Overall, it was an amazing four months that I wish I could repeat again and again.

What would you improve about this program?
I would have liked more information and training about the problem-based learning system that Maastricht University practices.
