Travel Bud Review

If it weren't for Travel Bud, I wouldn't have been able to make it to Japan. They provided a great path for me to achieve my goal of teaching in Japan and I appreciate the program for being able to both certify me in teaching and facilitate my travel here. Given the state of the world in 2021 and having explored other avenues of travel, I can confidently say if it weren't for Travel Bud I wouldn't be living in Japan now. The program is simple, comprehensive, and they offer guaranteed job placement.

Pros
  • Certification Provided
  • Guaranteed Job Placement
  • Simple Steps
Cons
  • Cost is High
  • Limited Countries
  • Limited Guidance

Go Overseas Review

My time in Japan has been short but well spent. In requesting this review, I was told to write something unique to me. However, I think what I'm currently experiencing isn't unique to me at all and that's what makes it so great. I've never met more polite people anywhere else in the world. The food is always well prepared and surprisingly cheap. There is a plethora of activities to enjoy yourself with everywhere you go (my favorite is definitely karaoke). And lastly, my job as an ALT is easily the most enjoyable job I've ever had. I think what's wonderful about Japan is that it has something to offer for everyone. I'd be lying if I said there weren't difficulties. Grocery shopping is a pain in the butt, not just because I have trouble interpreting the price tags but also because the food is so different from America that I never know what to cook. Little road bumps like this will be common in anyone's stay here but I am adamant that the pros outweigh the cons.

Pros
  • Rich in history and culture everywhere you go.
  • Always something new and fun to do.
  • The people are very polite and willing to help.
Cons
  • Grocery shopping is very difficult.
  • Public transportation works well here but it's still inconvenient not having a car.
  • Doing anything through city hall is intimidating.

Hi Anthony, Thank you so much for taking the time out of your exciting new life in Japan to share your experience with us. It is wonderful to hear that you are embracing all that the Japanese culture has to offer. With that mindset of embracing and learning (even the very different foods), you will always take so much away from your experience and continue to grow and have adventures, both around Japan and in your own kitchen. We love that you mentioned your time as an ALT Is the most enjoyable job you have had so far, I have no doubt if you are enjoying it then your students are having an equally fruitful experience. Keep embracing the little road bumps and feel free to tag us (@travelbudco) in your kitchen chronicles and adventures in and outside of your classroom :)

Study Abroad Experience in Japan

The experience was definitely so helpful, especially during the pandemic. I received a lot of support and reassurance from the team and they were very professional and helpful from start to finish! Anytime I had worries or questions, the team will be quick to respond and would make sure to find all possible solutions or remedies. This was especially helpful when borders were still closed and I had to figure out all the paperwork, visa materials, and entry requirements. It felt nice to receive that guidance when everything was still unknown. Coming to Japan was very smooth and I am throughly enjoying my stay!

Response from TravelBud

Always have a backup plan.

Travelling to the other side of the world on a budget can be a daunting task. Before arriving to Japan I was nervous about many things, from what to do at the airport to what I should prepare. I decided to use hire Travelbud to help me get a job and to have my back for living alone in Japan. This company was always supportive and would answer and questions I had. I currently work for Interac in the Kochi prefecture. Interac has helped me get set up and they have regular training and meet up with other English teachers. The teachers here are friendly and often share snacks “omyage” and would guide me in events or activities at the school. While my home is in a very rural area, there is still plenty of shops and restaurants to visit. Overall I am happy with how things turned out. With Interac being a supportive company you might wonder if hiring a team was worth the money, but I still think it is. Travelbud is my backup team if I start to have issues with my current company. While Interac have been nothing but great to me, knowing that if all else fails I can get help and advice from an independent company brings me comfort and security while in a foreign country.

Pros
  • Great support
  • Kind and helpful staff
  • Friendly locals
Cons
  • Rural, about 2.5 hours to a city with many shops.
Response from TravelBud

Dear Alister, it is so lovely to hear about the incredible time you are having in Japan and we’re so happy that you’re teaching in such a caring and supportive environment - the sharing of omiyage speaks volumes to how welcoming and caring your fellow teachers are, what a wonderful way to help a foreign English Teacher settle into their new life.
We are most certainly always here for you, Alister, whether you’d just like to let us know how things are going, ask a question (no question is too big or small), if you need advice, need help or feel ready to move on to your next destination or contract, TravelBud is here to support you with anything and everything.
We hope your time in Japan will move from positive to positive experiences and that you’ll enjoy every moment of your time there, Alister. Thank you for your lovely review and feedback, we appreciated it tremendously.

What you make of it.

I taught in Nagoya, Japan. Being a teacher in America, I was already aware of the joys and struggles of teaching; there would be no shock from the work and pay (or lack thereof). My school was incredibly lacking in proper teaching materials, training, and ethics when it came to aiding students with different needs. It was about money and that's it. The other teachers, however, were kind and knew of the school's faults. I was very lucky to be with teachers who understood what the school was lacking. I built great relationships with the other teachers and can't wait to see them again when I return to Nagoya. My advice to those who go to teach in Japan: be weary of your leaders. Do what you can to make your experience and students happy, but understand that there's only so much you can do. Make connections with those around you and do what you can to appreciate the country and people rather than fixate on the workplace.

Regarding this program, while I wish the school they picked for me was a more qualified one, I appreciated the support and options they gave me. I would definitely return to this program with the current knowledge I hold and ability to differentiate a good school from one that panders to families for money rather than focus on student growth & health.

Pros
  • Understanding of what you want and realistic about your chances of getting it.
  • Flexible and willing to work with you to find the job you want.
  • Consistent communication.
Cons
  • My school did very little to assist teachers with finding teaching materials.
  • School did not listen to teachers' voices to improve school quality.

Supportive

This program has been supportive and attentive to to your preferences on where you want to reach and how old the students are, although I was limited in choices due to COVID. It does the anxiety inducing work for you in finding a school due to their connections, and having a guaranteed placement is reassuring. Advice I’d give to new travelers is it’s easy to say “anywhere” when moving abroad because it’s exciting, but try to narrow your preferences and the why behind them! I think you’ll be more satisfied if you allow yourself to be more specific and not end up in a place you end up hating.

Pros
  • Guaranteed placement
  • Communication
  • Listens to preferences
Cons
  • A little pricey
  • Lack of social connections and events
Response from TravelBud

Denise, we so appreciate your review and the feedback you have left. The choices were indeed limited due to Covid, but we are so happy that the team was supportive and attentive throughout your process.
Your advice to future teachers is very wise and I am sure it will help many teachers who are planning on enrolling to teach abroad. Research is always key and aiming to end up in a location where you know you’ll be happy is an excellent step in the direction of settling into your new life with ease.
We are always here if you’re ready to move on to your next location, Denise - remember you have your lifetime of placement guarantees with TravelBud and we’re always here and ready to help.
Stay well and thank you again, Denise.

Very good!

The program was very fun and exciting to complete. It was a new step in my life, and I was very nervous throughout the whole process and before arriving in Korea, but the placement team made sure the transition was seamless and worry free, and I understood everything I had to do before I moved abroad. Every instruction and email that I was given was always clear and simple. It’s definitely something I’d recommend to other future teachers, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity that you won’t regret!

Response from TravelBud

Dear Zoyaa, thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a positive review and feedback. We are incredibly excited to hear that the program was fun and exciting to complete. Nerves are such a big part of the process, especially in the weeks leading up to your departure, I am so pleased to hear the placement team made the transition a smooth one and helped ease those nerves a bit.
I appreciate your recommendation tremendously and agree wholeheartedly with you - teaching English abroad is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and such an incredibly fulfilling experience.
Remember, we’re always here for you if you’d ever like to move on to a new destination and adventure, Zoyaa.
Thank you again for the lovely review, Zoyaa.

TravelBud

TravelBud was super helpful in helping me become an English teacher in South Korea and made the transition moving to a different country very easy and smooth! Moving to a different country and learning a completely new culture can be very difficult but TravelBud helped me find a very comfortable job and put me in contact with all the right people so when I arrived here my transition has been very smooth and really enjoyable! Would definitely recommend for anyone thinking of teaching English abroad for their first time.

Pros
  • Experiencing a new culture
  • Meeting lots of new people
  • Developing your own skills
Cons
  • Sometime hard to meet people out of the school setting
  • Language barrier can make some things a little hard
  • Perhaps might have been good to know more about applying for a registration card just before/when i just arrived
Response from TravelBud

Emma, we are incredibly glad to hear you had such a good experience on your road to becoming an English teacher in South Korea. We know how incredibly tough it can be to move to a foreign country where the culture is so different from what you are used to. I’m happy that the team was able to make that transition smooth and easier than it would have been had you done it on your own. Thank you for your positive and lovely review, Emma, and for recommending us to those teachers out there wanting to make a similar transition to the one you have made.
We will most certainly work on the suggestions you’ve made - an Alian Registration Guideline is at the top of our list and we are working on ways that will allow English teachers to meet up more regularly and connect with ease.
Please don’t forget that we are always here for you if you need anything - you’re always more than welcome to reach out and we’ll be more than happy to help.
Stay well and thank you again,

Amazing

Extremely smooth and informative staff. Saskia Smuts helped me during my application and time in Thailand. I'd definitely recommend this experience. I was a little nervous to go so far away from home alone, but they made the process simple in terms of explaining VISAs and other issues. When i arrived in Thailand, everything was already prepared for me in advance. I loved meeting new people and learning about their culture. Thank you TravelBud for helping me get to Thailand, and for helping me become a certified TEFL teacher!

Response from TravelBud

Dear Deepali,
We so appreciate your review and your willingness to share your experience with all those thinking about embarking on a Teach Abroad journey. Feeling nervous before travelling abroad by yourself is completely normal, I myself still get the travel-jitters before I board a flight, so we are very happy that we could be there for you to offer assistance and ease some of the worries you had.
The Land of Smiles is such a hospitable place and the perfect country to start a TEFL journey, we love to hear that you enjoyed meeting new people and learning more about the Thai culture - that is what travel is all about after all!
When the TEFL-teaching bug bites again, Deepali, we are here as always and would love to assist you to find your next teaching placement.
Warm regards,
Saskia

The Experience

So much I could really say here but overall, I would say TAKE IN the experience. Being in my 30s, I've found that there's something for everyone to do here in South Korea. The safety is top notch and the Koreans are pretty patient when it comes to the beginner Korean speaking person, such as myself, to be able to properly translate the needs of wants of daily life. It has been a humbling experience on so many levels, from having to depend on public transportation when prior to that I was on my own terms, to learning new ways, the Korean ways of doing things. A major piece of advice that I would give to any future travelers in the problem is be sure you know what is expected of you within your contract and to be open-minded at the same time. Know that the decisions you make from the beginning of the process to your end, will and should be decisions that are BEST for you. It started off pretty rough for me simply because being a veteran educator from the States, it was a bit of challenge to truly understand what a hagwon's expectation was for staff. I did not always agree with their procedures but at the same time, I had to remind myself that I was not here to compare but to embrace the contrast. Once I understood that, I begin to just go with the flow. Again, not being easy as a teacher with experience but it was the weekends and holidays off that really made it all worth where it didn't have to be ALL about work, but some time for fun as well. I do recommend that one knows their contract in and out and really understand what you are signing up for and not just because it sounds good and cute. Do it for the experience, yes, but also do it knowing your true goals and be open-minded because it will get difficult at times. Do it with a friend if you can! But whatever you do, do it because it is in your heart to do! The world is so big. Why not start with exploring outside the 4 walls you are in now?! ENJOY and never be afraid to do what's BEST!

Pros
  • New environment/scenery
  • Networking and making connections from all walks of life
  • Program team support along the way
Cons
  • Organization/communication of hagwons at times
  • The desire from certain program staff to rush travelers into the process
Response from TravelBud

Hey LaShonda!

Thank you so very much for sharing your story and most importantly, your advice to other teachers from your profound experience abroad. I think I speak for the whole team at TravelBud when I say that we were incredibly moved and inspired by your wisdom, your passion and your adaptability. I was particularly struck by your your story of adapting to new ways of life in Korea and how it can feel strange and difficult at first, but that being open minded makes all the difference. I remember in my own experience when I got back, I felt I had done, seen, grown so much but there's always more to take in! "The world is so big"- you're so right. Isn't it strange how the more you travel the bigger the world gets, instead of smaller? Thank you for sharing your feedback and experience (and your stunning photos!) and for reminding us why we love the world of teach abroad that we work in! We are so proud of you and truly pleased that you took this giant leap of faith with us. Keep traveling and keep making positive change around the world!

Warmest Regards,
Grace & the TravelBud Team
