An amazing summer in Barcelona

I decided to join Adelante's program back in March of 2017 for an internship starting in June of 2017. It was a little last minute, but Adelante worked with me to get everything I needed done in time! I stayed in Barcelona for 2 months (June to July) and had an amazing time! My favorite part of the summer were the 2 weeks of Spanish classes that you take in the beginning (my focus this summer was improving my Spanish and these classes are what helped me the most). My internship was actually at the language school that I took classes at. I'm a psychology major interested in human resources so I worked with the coordinators on conducting feedback from their English Professors. My internship could have been better in terms of having more work to do during the week, but I loved the staff and enjoyed the experience. Finally, as a city, you can't beat Barcelona! It has everything to offer, but the beach is the #1 perk. If you're debating between Madrid, Seville, and Barcelona, just choose Barcelona. You won't regret it.

What would you improve about this program?
My one concern after finishing this trip, is that I feel like I could have done what I did for less money had a found everything on my own. I understand that Adelante is a business that requires money to operate. I also understand that I am paying for the convenience of other people doing the hard work of finding accommodations and internship placements. However, knowing what I know now about the cost of living in Barcelona, I would be interested to know more specifically the breakdown of what my program fee went to because I understand now that a lot of it went towards Adelante rather than housing and tuition for classes like I originally thought. That being said, the program fee at Adelante really is lower than most other programs, and Adelante is professional, friendly, and supportive!
Response from Adelante Abroad

Hola Cassidy. Thank you for the strong review and excellent details. I am writing about your comment about organizing your airport pickup, classes, housing and internship on your own. The goal is that, next time, you do! It really is near impossible to do so the first time abroad, which we know from first-hand experience: taxi drivers can triple charge a jet lagged, young student on arrival; landlords can ask for an exorbitant deposit and then never return it, or simply raise the rent and if you don't pay, remove you; companies say they want you as an intern, then either never sign a contract with you, and you are unprotected and at the whim of random staff members, or simply stop returning emails and phone calls. These are just a few examples of what we here at HQ have experienced and what we eliminate, for a fee, ever happening. Thank you for acknowledging that we are the most economical Intern Abroad and Study Abroad provider on the market. This is our goal, so more people can live, intern and learn abroad. Team Adelante

I had fun in Barcelona!

I was with Adelante for their two-month program in Barcelona under Business Marketing. I would say I had a really fun overall experience. I met so many people all over. Most of them are from the U.S. I'm from California and everyone else was from the east coast. Those friends that I've met were my family in Barcelona for all two-months I was here. We all went out together and traveled together.

The two-week language school, Kingsbrook, is intense, but I learned a great deal and I had to start my internship right when I got to Barcelona so my schedule was jammed pack. It was my decision, not Adelante. However, I don't know the difference between Adelante program and Kingsbrook. I had more connections through Kingsbrook than I did with Adelante. I'm not quite sure. Overall, I'm thankful for the program that took the effort to find my internship. Furthermore, I had an amazing time!

Seize your summer!

I initially got in contact with Adelante because of a lack of graduate student internships offered in my Master's program. When I heard that they had so many different types of internships, specifically a dedicated translation internship (I'm currently getting my M.S. in translation) I decided I had to take the leap and just go for it.

I had really wanted to live abroad again but wanted to experience Europe this time and on my own terms (I studied in Buenos Aires, Argentina during undergrad). Madrid is an absolutely amazing city, I would 100% come back here. Adelante took care of all the housing and internship placement which was SO nice. My apartment was much bigger than the apartment I have back home and it was in the perfect location.

Although I was initially hesitant about why I had to attend Spanish classes at the language school I was really glad the 2 weeks were required. The teachers were all really nice and just tried to get us talking while teaching us in a very practical manner.

I know from experience how hard it can be to find reputable international internships, I get it. Honestly, I got so lucky that I found Adelante. They did all the planning, apartment-hunting, interviewing and arrangements for me so that I could focus on just enjoying my experience. The internship was great, I learned so much and now I have something truly impressive to put on my resume when I get home. If you want a truly unique summer experience and a rigorous internship, Adelante is for you.

What would you improve about this program?
I think that the program could be improved with weekly or bi-weekly language classes included in the program fee. I would have loved to have kept going to some of the classes just to get some conversation hours in but unfortunately it was too expensive. Being able to opt-in to these classes would have been great.

I don't want to leave

I participated in the ecology and countryside management branches at the SRUC Oatridge campus. The lecturers that provided me with projects were so incredibly helpful. Anytime I needed help or had a question there was ALWAYS someone there who went above and beyond to make sure my question was answered. Throughout my time there, I learned a lot about the ecology of Scotland and how it differs from the environment that I am used to at home. I also made some lasting friendships with some of the locals that I met while staying in the dorms. Scotland is full of experiences for any type of person, and it was an experience that I would urge more people to take part in.

What would you improve about this program?
The best improvement that I could suggest for this program is more help or detailed information on public transportation, especially at the SRUC Oatridge campus. The campus is fairly rural and it was a little stressful trying to figure out how to get places.

A great experience

I have an amazing time here in Scotland. I got a lot of hands-on experience in the field of psychology and it started my interest in the realm of research. I was able to conduct and create some of my own experiments. The professors were able to give me a new perspective to the way that psychology applies to everyday life. The location of the apartment was stellar and so close to the most lively parts of Edinburgh. This experience has been a super helpful and interesting. Loved it!

Great Experience

The experience was very beneficial. It was important to be able to do things on your own and be able to meet other people. In this sense, I am in Agriculture, which is different then others. I was able to meet and talk to farmers or be in the office doing audits of farmers. It was interesting be able to talk about research since I also completed research on Anti-microbials in livestock during my internship. I have also took a step into Dairy Schemes since I currently work at my dairy at school. I got to look into several different sectors of agriculture and learned a lot from my two supervisors even though the last week was a little slower than the rest. While working 40 hours or more, I gained so much experience and got free tickets to the Royal Highland Show which I highly recommend for animal lovers, agriculture lovers, and adventure tenders.

What would you improve about this program?
The program needs to be more careful about those they accept. As there are so many people who apply for these positions, it is important to make sure that those individuals are open-minded, friendly, and actually interested in experiencing the culture. It would have been lot of fun if everyone was involved doing activities outside of work.
Also I would try to include the transportation fee somehow (flight/bus/train) instead of each candidate finding the flight.

Experience of a Lifetime

I owe so many thanks to Adelante Abroad for allowing me to satisfy my love for travel while also getting to fully immerse myself into living in another country. All of my previous travel experience has been with a group of other students, and this was my first time traveling abroad alone. The staff at Adelante (particularly Jeramee) was so quick to answer any questions I had, whether it be from preparing for my trip to things to do while actually in Scotland.

The housing situation was better than I could have hoped. The flat myself and two other participants lived in was fully furnished and clean. Additionally, it was extremely centrally located -- SO many grocery stores, shops, bars, and restaurants were within walking distance, it made traveling without a vehicle a nonexistent problem. However, I would definitely recommend purchasing a bus pass (the Ridacard), as this allows you to travel throughout the whole city for a reasonable price.

In regards to the program itself, the staff where I did my placement (the Edinburgh Zoo) were all extremely friendly and welcoming. They were in full support of the research project I had designed and did everything in their power to help me work on and complete the project. The zoo truly did feel like my home away from home while I was here.

The aspect that really tops off the experience is the abundance of things to do while on placement. Take full advantage of your placement in Scotland!! I spent weekends traveling to the Highlands, Iceland, and London in addition to doing some sightseeing throughout the city (such as some of the many museums, the castle, etc.). I think you don't truly get the cultural experience unless you are actively trying to immerse yourself in the city and its surroundings. I wish that the Scotland program was longer than six weeks, though, because it seems like you are just settling in to the country when it is once again time to pack up and leave.

Overall, I would recommend Adelante Abroad to any independent traveler looking to not only gain work experience, but also experience life abroad in a way that might otherwise not be possible!!

What would you improve about this program?
I think that the Visa situation needs to be improved. Customs became suspicious of me when I said I was going to be in Scotland for six weeks, and even after showing them the invitation letter from the zoo stating I was not working but simply "observing," they were hesitant to allow me into the country. Another one of the students on placement with me actually got held in customs due to a similar situation. Thankfully, we both made it through, but I think this needs more looking in to.
Response from Adelante Abroad

Kaitlyn, what an important and detailed review of your Adelante program, thank you, thank you. To the Visa issue you mention:
yes, with "Brexit" and also the US's current administration, travel, especially to the United Kingdom, seems to be getting more monitored. Candidates can expect, for a while at least, to get questioned at the airport, which is why we provide the customized letter from each Scottish company (in your case, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland), inviting you to Scotland. For the past eight years, simply showing this document at the airport is enough. Lately, though there have been more and more questions to answer, as well. Everyone completed their summer programs just fine, and we here at Adelante apologize for the new rigor at customs. We will continue to educate and also to keep an eye on any new travel policy that comes out.

Was a great time!

I had an over all awesome time here in Scotland. My favorite part how ever was the social aspect of it. I spent the majority of my time with the students at Oatridge College and girls in the study abroad Equine program. I was able to join in on some of their ridding as well which was a great addition to what I was doing. The internship was also great I learned a lot about event planning and showjumping such as course design/set up. I also learned a lot about event management and all that goes into setting up various types of shows.

What would you improve about this program?
The program could improve by providing more detail with what the students will actually be doing in their internship. I was place at the Scottish National Equestrian Center originally wanting to shadow an Equine Veterinarian. I was perfectly fine with the switch but would have loved to know more details about what I was going to be doing prior to coming to Scotland
Response from Adelante Abroad

Dear L, thanks SO much for your wonderful reviews. And photos too! Our reply here is in response to your comment that you wished you knew more about your work assignment at the SNEC. In the Memorandum document, which all candidates receive and sign prior to their arrival into Scotland, here is the description SNEC provided (its long sorry!):
"The student will have the opportunity to review our state of the art venue for equestrian sports and activities at the Scottish National Equestrian Center. This includes our stabling and accommodations, feeding, training and event management. The student also will visit with our staff to discuss our approach to marketing and the use of social media. Our weekly schedule of events provides the student an excellent perspective of our equine activity for all ages. The student will observe our day-to-day activities, regarding the scheduling and management of afternoon, evening and weekend events. The student will assist with weekly showjumping, dressage training and indoor event training. An inside look at our web management, online entries, management of corporate events, and our plans to attract advertisers and sponsors will add to the students understanding of the mission of our Center."
We are thinking that since this was provided in February to you, and the program began in May perhaps you forgot? The staff at SNEC were extremely happy with you for the duration of your placement, and said so in a glowing report sent after the program ended. Good job, L!

The program that opens dorrs to you

During my internship in Barcelona I had a fantastic experience. The city is amazing with a lot of fun and things to do. You cannot like it in here. Housing was quite good although it was far away from my internship company. The work experience in my internship was really useful. I got a lot of contacts that will help me in my future career. I met a lot of important and interesting people. I learnt a new language and culture thanks to visiting a lot of cultural events. I spent 4 months in Barcelona. I suggest new students to do their internship for the longest time possible. You will not be disappointed . Adelante stuff was helpful, I did not have any problem and if so they resolved all of them. Also the Spanish course at the begging of the internship is interesting and useful. It helps you to get used to Spanish.

What would you improve about this program?
Interact more with other students. More programs organized for all of us.

6 Month Accounting Internship

Montevideo is an awesome city and Uruguay as a whole is a wonderful destination. Their culture is beautiful and I fell in love with all of the street art. However I felt 6 months was way too long of a time period. The city is small-ish and after two months I felt I had seen all there was to see. There are many beach towns up the coast that I would highly recommend traveling to. That being said Uruguay outside of their summer months is very bleak. My housing arrangements were with a family that I became very close with and felt like my own. For my internship I was given a lot of busy work. Things I felt to keep me occupied but didn't help or effect the company at all. I used my time there mostly to practice my speaking skills. My internship was my least favorite part of my trip.

Response from Adelante Abroad

Hola Madi B! We loved having you, loved receiving your updates and are still posting and using your fabulous photos. I sure wish we would have known that you were not happy in the Accounting placement! If we had known, we could have intervened to help secure more advanced duties for you, or moved you, if needed. (We did receive a VERY positive report from your Supervisor, Fabian, at the end of your internship: the language level was an issue at the beginning, but the overall Eval was rock solid) Good luck in all future endeavors, and should Adelante be able to assist with any job search or reference request, we will gladly do so.
