Glad I Came

The early processes of applying for this program were very clear and straightforward. Adelante did an excellent job communicating what was needed from me along with all the important details and deadlines leading up to my trip.
Upon arrival, everything was as described. I had a ride from the airport to my apartment, was greeted by my landlord who walked me through everything, and started language courses at Kingsbrook the following Monday.
Kingsbrook was probably my favorite part of the whole program. All of the workers were extremely friendly and helpful, and it was an easy way to meet people who were also traveling and make friends right away.
After the two weeks at Kingsbrook began my internship. Though not necessarily Adelante's fault, maybe more so the company I worked for, but I was extremely, extremely....... extremely bored. Every day that I was there. I sat at a computer and did data entry, sometimes printed and filed important documents, but that was about it. I was okay with this at the beginning of course, but I thought eventually I'd get to at least participate in some of the event coordination that the company does (this was a group travel agency who planned museum tours, amusement park entry, sporting events, etc. for large groups of students). Though everyone was very kind and I liked the atmosphere of where I worked, I was quite disappointed with the way the internship played out.
My apartment was clean and very modern, however pretty far from the city (~25 min metro ride) which made it a bit of a hassle when wanting to go explore. My apartment did not come with a washing machine but instead my landlord would come and take the laundry once a week and bring it back several days later. Not a huge deal but this was sometimes problematic when I was traveling to other cities over the weekend and some weeks she would take way too long to return the clothes. I learned later it was much easier to just hand wash them myself. Something to note as this was not explained to me beforehand.

As a whole I enjoyed my time in Barcelona and very happy to have chosen this city to live in! I was lucky enough to be here for some of the city's biggest holidays and could not have enjoyed my time more.

What would you improve about this program?
This program can be improved by providing a breakdown of what exactly it is that you're paying for. I was told that not everyone paid the same amount for the language course which did not sit well with me, seeing as it was the group of Adelante students who were the ones reportedly paying a higher rate compared to others who were not part of this program.
Response from Adelante Abroad

Thank you Jessica for the wonderful review and all the time you took to write it! Just two points I'd like to address here: 1) your boredom at the workplace. We make it a point to check in with our candidates via email and Whats App, about every four days or so. In those checking-in emails we ask about your internship, among other things, so that if there is any issue we can step in to assist. Usually one phone call from our Director can help with an internship boredom issue, if we would have known about it! And 2) cost of your Spanish classes. Part of this program is the Intensive Spanish Language Course, for 4 hours per day, 5 days per week for the first two weeks you are in-country, to get you prepped for your internship. The price is the same for all Adelante candidates. There are many international students at the same language school, not in the Adelante program, doing different programs or just taking classes during their time in Barcelona. A six week course will be a different price than a two week course; one on one classes also have different pricing; some take classes in the morning and in the afternoons. There is an entire menu of options for other students, not Adelante candidates, at that language school. Adelante candidates all take the same course and pay the exact same amount.
(Last thing - the beach apartment where you lived is a bit far from the tourist center, but we like it because it is close to the beach! Some of our apartments have washing machines and some do not. Most candidates just do their own laundry at a laundry mat if they are in housing with no washing machine)
Thank you again and stay in touch - Team Adelante

6 Month Internship in Sevilla

I've just returned to Trinidad and Tobago after my 6 month internship in Sevilla. I wish I could hop on a plane in the morning and head right back! That's how amazing my experience was. I'll begin with my Adelante team who facilitated my internship. They were awesome, checking up frequently to make sure everything was as it should be, I’d say on a month to month basis. On arrival, I met my Program Coordinator at SIGE. From the first day we met at her office to the very morning I left, I can say my stay would not have been the same without her warm and loving nature. I never felt like a fish out of water once, as she offered much support over the 6 months during every twist and turn. My first placement lasted all of two weeks; however, my program coordinator soon found a suitable match, surprisingly a charming little museum we both visited by chance on the first day we met. In the first two weeks SIGE arranged tours of Sevilla and a two week intense Spanish Course before I began my internship, unfortunately, I did not pick up much more of the language as my second Internship was in English, and I had only been studying Spanish for 2/3 months prior to leaving Trinidad. I did however get by just fine with the basics. The people of Sevilla are extremely spirited and generous, and their strong vibrant culture is like none other. I was able to look on at the Semana Santa street processions during the Easter and take part in the Feria de Abril de Sevilla, its biggest festival, such good times and amazing memories. I can’t speak about Sevilla without mentioning two things 1) how simply beautiful it is, from its cobble stone narrow streets, to its brilliant monuments, palaces and cathedrals, to the large river separating Sevilla and Triana, just stunning! 2) How extremely hot the summer months are. If you don’t like the heat, perhaps choose to go to Sevilla in the cooler months. July/August months are tough! Somehow by a miracle I was able to make it through the heat. My second Art internship in Museum and Cultural Management was a perfect match. The president of the Museum/Foundation and her husband were the best hosts and I learnt quite a lot during my time. I used my weekends and days off to travel, which enhanced my experience even more. My apartment was a 5 to 10 minute walk from everything including the bus, metro, restaurants/bars, the grocery, the mall and even a night club (if you are into that sort of thing) and I never once felt unsafe. All in all I will highly recommend your first or next Internship to be done in Sevilla. All the best guys!

What would you improve about this program?
The biggest challenge for me was the heat in my apartment during the summer months. My room was not air conditioned, so the July and August months were difficult without AC. Perhaps Adelante can ensure AC'd rooms for students and interns in the future.

Madrid internship

What a great program! I completed a medical internship in Madrid from June-August 2017. I am a pre health biochemistry student and was interested in getting some medical experience abroad. Adalante was very efficient in finding me the perfect internship position with a mental health organization that works with people who have scizophrenia. The program coordinators are also extremely accommodating. I had an enlightening experience in Madrid and would recommend this program to anyone else!

Adelante Abroad: Madrid Summer 2017

This summer I was in Madrid for my one-month internship, working at an English summer day camp for children aged 4-16. My experience in Madrid was a very positive one!

In terms of accommodation, the apartment was nice and considering there were 6 people living there it was actually surprisingly spacious! I didn't get to meet a lot of my flatmates because we all had internships during the day, and other things to do so we didn't see each other that often (and I was also only there for one month), but the people I met were great and I'm planning to see them in the future! The apartment was also right in the centre, in Sol, so getting both to the Eureka Spanish Academy and work (and even the airport!) was very straightforward and the metro in Madrid works amazingly. Overall, the apartment gave me the freedom of my own room with the possibility of still socialising with others which is the perfect mix!

The classes offered at Eureka were one of the highlights of my trip! The teachers were absolutely phenomenal and in such a short space of time, my Spanish improved significantly! The people attending the classes changed more or less every week, with new people arriving and others leaving from all across the globe. It was wonderful meeting all of those people and it was sad when we had to say our goodbyes.

As for my internship, being there for one month, I only had the option to teach English, which isn't related to my future career plans per se but was none the less a magnificent experience! It was my first time ever interning, and I was also in a foreign country, but the company I worked with was fantastic! The staff were very welcoming and friendly, and by the end of the first week I had already gotten the hang of how the day camp was run. The children were adorable and they definitely put a smile on my face that I carried with me for the rest of the day! Though I was nervous at first, the final experience was 100% worth it!

As for the city, well Madrid is just beautiful! It can't be expressed it words really, you simply have to try it out for yourself!

What would you improve about this program?
If there is anything that could be improved it would be the one-month option of teaching English. It would have been better if I had gotten a chance to do something related to my future career choice but I understand that for just one month it is hard to find an internship, especially if, like in my case, I hadn't had any previous working experience.

A paid-for taxi for the return flight would have been nice, as there is a paid for one on arrival, but the metro worked fine nonetheless.

Lastly, the program is a bit on the expensive side, especially for an internship seeing as you're not getting paid, but for what the program offered I can understand that the money went to good use. It's just that a little cheaper would have been better.
Response from Adelante Abroad

Hi Marta! Thank you so much for your review. We are happy to hear that you had a wonderful time in Madrid. Yes, although we do offer the 1-month internship for Teaching English only, we do encourage our candidates to intern abroad for longer because most companies prefer to have interns for more than a couple of weeks. Staying abroad for 2 months or more is ideal for our candidates to gain experience related to their career as well as gaining more fluency in Spanish.

You mentioned the pricing as really the only negative here; all of our pricing is upfront on our website with no hidden fees, so it's really easy to shop and compare and see that we're the most economical in the market.

On top of our affordable pricing, we give our Alumni candidates a considerable discount when they return for a second internship with us. Perhaps that will be an option for you in the future when you are able to participate a little longer.

We have new data that shows as you "unpack" your experience, you have learned more than you realize and have gained an international skill set not possible if you hadn't ventured abroad with us. Check out the new "Guided Reflection Exercises" section on our website. Thank you once again for leaving such a great review. Good luck in all future endeavors - Team Adelante!

Medical Internship

My time in Ecuador was a trip that I will never forget. Adelante does a great job in setting up a network in order to get you the best experience in terms of living and job placement. During my internship, I got the chance to have a hands on experience learning how to take blood, administer IV’s, attend wounds, and have an up close experience observing simple surgeries. I also got the chance to be fully submerged in a culture completely different then what I am used to. I was able to improve my soonish skills as well as learning about a beautiful and new culture. My time spent with my host family was one that I will never forget as well as the amount of friends I made while I was there. Adelante did a great job in making sure we had a program director we could count on for anything. I highly recommend this program to anyone seeking out an experience that can make you outstanding to employers as well as making you a better person all around.

Fun and Valuable Opportunity!

This program was so great! I learned so much and had such amazing opportunities. I was able to enter the operating room and converse with the actual surgeons about different techniques and procedures. The contacts I made in Spain not only with the surgical staff, but also the friends in the program, will help me through out my life. It was such a unique experience and I am so glad I went! I have already been able to use this experience to help with my further studies at my university as well as on resumes for jobs.

Go to Quito!

Spending part of my summer in Quito was an amazing opportunity. While there were rough moments/challenges, I gained so much. I knew minimal Spanish when I arrived, and was able to learn the language very quickly with my classes. I also gained a huge amount of academic/professional experience. If you're looking to travel, gain a lot of hands on career practice, and overall life experience, this is a great program.

What would you improve about this program?
As the Quito base continues to grow, and they have more experience, they will have a chance to fix plenty of the problems. Just takes time.

2 month marketing internship in Quito, Ecuador

The Adelante Abroad program was a great experience for me. I enjoyed the independence that was allotted to me, while I also felt that I had all the resources I needed to be comfortable and safe. Ecuador is a great place to meet many people from all over the world and travel on a budget. I lived with a warm and welcoming family that took great care of me. I was able to work in a small marketing/communications firm and learn a lot about the field. I would highly recommend this program to anyone who is looking to have real work experience abroad, with the comforts and resources of a traditional study abroad program.

Bacán!

One of the unique aspects of this program is its location in Vina/Valpo, most programs tend to be in Santiago and I liked being outside of a big city because it allowed me really try and immerse myself into the culture and gave me the opportunity to speak and practice my Spanish. There are a lot of college students in this area and it’s close enough and inexpensive to get to Santiago.

It’s a flexible program and you really have to be very independent because there’s not a lot of administrative support. We basically had to figure everything out on our own. However as a girl traveling alone I really liked that Vina feels safe.

I really enjoyed my internship a lot although they never really gave me real work to do. In terms of getting actual experience I really didn’t feel like I did as much as I wanted to. My internship was in Valparaiso, which was nice because I was able to get to know both cities and everyone I worked with was great. They were also really flexible which is convenient if you’re coming to Chile to travel.

I personally didn’t like being forced to take Spanish lessons for three weeks; it was annoying to have to spend three hours doing grammar everyday especially because I’m a fluent native speaker. Learning a bit about the culture and slang was really useful especially once I got to my internship (but I probably could have learned on my own).

The housing placement was good, I had my own room, it was super central, and a five-minute walk to the beach but it’s poorly run. It’s not very well taken care of (filthy and falling apart) and the last month of my stay was considerably better but it took two months of insisting that things on my part to get to that point. The staff at the international center is nice but honestly I felt like I had to constantly bug them to get info that I wanted or needed, they don’t particularly go out of their way to help you. They’ll do it but only because you insist, which was really frustrating at times.

However despite any of these problems, the program does live up to what it promises.

Response from Adelante Abroad

Thank you Delilah for the review and for recommending this program. We do need to address some things you wrote. First, having to "figure out everything on our own": there is a formal Orientation upon arrival and then you have access to our onsite Director every day for the first three weeks in-country. There should be no reason you have "to figure everything out on your own." You simply have to ask, if in Orientation or if over 21 days of face to face contact, something you have a question about is not covered. Your internship: good to hear that you enjoyed your work assignment. They are a prestigious, busy company that willingly wants to teach you and made a space for you. If you felt you didn't have enough to do, or finished tasks early, it's always best to ask for more. Candidates that get the most out of this program are those who are proactive.
Spanish lessons: you and another girl in the program at the same time were fluent Spanish speakers upon arrival, so therefore always have the option to take fewer weeks of Spanish classes. According to our records, both of you were advised of this - she took that option, and took less weeks of classes, you did not. So we're not sure why you have included this as an issue, since the choice was yours.
Lastly your housing: this house was clean when you arrived, and if over the length of your program, it became "filthy", well that is hard for us to fix in the bi-weekly cleaning service included. The day to day is on you and your roommates. We have many, many photos from our cleaning service of the house while you lived there. Not pretty. Our Director, in Chile, also advised you and your roommates, multiple times, based on those photos, to please not leave days and days of trash out, to not leave wet towels on the floor, to do the dishes before both sinks were full of them, etc.
We do check in with you daily at first then weekly, so if the above cleaning issues were not your fault, it would have been good to hear that then, not now, after the program is over.
It seems like all the issues you mention could have been easily avoided with better communication from you in the form of answers to our Director and answers to our daily, then weekly, checking in contacts. Nevertheless, it sounds like you had an amazing life and professional experience in Chile. Team Adelante

Great Experience

This program has so much to offer - I had such a great experience over in Barcelona! I was there for 2 months and did not want to leave. Barcelona was fun, young, and lively. Everyone I met there was very nice. Not once did I feel in danger - it was a safe and clean city.

My marketing internship was done at the language school you attend the first two weeks of the program. I could not have asked for a better internship. I made so many new friends and loved the place.

This was the first time I had ever lived on my own - let alone in a foreign country. I could tell how much more mature I felt leaving as to when I first arrived. It is a great experience to have, and luckily this program helps you along the way.

What would you improve about this program?
This program can improve by breaking down the total cost more. It would have been nice to see where my money was actually going, and the actual cost of living in Barcelona etc. Don't get me wrong it was definitely more cheap than other programs out there, but it still would have been nice to see the breakdown.
