Living in Leiden

As expected, Europe is pretty expensive (as far as travel/dining). However, in Leiden there are several things to do for free - riding your bike through the city, exploring local museums with friends. As far as the social/nightlife scene, drinks are expensive at bars. If you want to have a party, you will have no problem finding an ample amount of people to hang out with - ISN (international student network) is a fantastic way to meet other students.

The Service Learning/Internship Advantage - Making the Most of Study Abroad

While in Mexico I took casses in Mexican culture, current affairs, the relationship between the United States and Mexico, Spanish, Mayan civilization, and two opportunities to complete service learning for internship, while living with a Mexican family. It was the service learning and internship opportunities that took my study abroad experience to a unique level that exposed me to more than what was available just by taking classes. My internship was completed at Sol y Luna, a non-profit therapeutic facility for young children with severe and profound intellectual and physical disabilities. Being a psychology major at my home institution, with a concentration in Applied Behavior Analysis of developmental disabilities, my participation at Sol y Luna allowed me to not only gain a deeper immersion into a part of Mexican culture, but also make connections between the practices and approaches offered in Mexico compared to the United States. My passions for this population were deepened and I became more aware of what my future work could look like. My time at Sol y Luna did by no means come without challenges. I was not only forced to operate using my non-native language, but I was exposed to a lot of things with little training or warning. The situations in which I was stretched and given a great deal of responsibility are the times I saw my real passion for the people I was working with, and the points at which my skill set was advanced, and my confidence soon followed. Without the opportunity to participate in Service Learning while abroad, I would not have been transformed into the psychology student or individual that I am now. My second service learning opportunity came at La Academía de Inglés (The English Academy) which was located in downtown Mérida and served to teach Mexican students (from a wide range of ages) English skills. English allows the people in Mérida to access better jobs and opportunities. My students’ families were making constant sacrifices so the students would be able to become proficient in the English language. I was exposed to the hardworking and diligent character of the Mexican people. My service at La Academía made me reflect on my own education, American culture, my Spanish skills, the English language, and teaching methods. Working with my students I was able to gain a deeper understanding of different Mexican cultural practices as well as answer questions and provide insight to the American way of life. Service learning is one of the main components of what made my time in Mexico more informative, more interactive, and more insightful. Using my time and talents to serve the people of Mexico made me less of a tourist – not someone who was just “passing through” – but instead an individual that was deeply invested in the culture and the people I was living around for this semester. I gained exposure to things in Mérida, formed relationships, and developed skills that would have not emerged had I not sought a program that offered service learning. I picked Central's study abroad program because of the service learning/internship component and would now highly recommend this program because of the ways I benefitted from the opportunities and exposure while in Mexico!

Great Program

Such a wonderful experience. I was truly blessed to get to live in Vienna, a city where music and art flourishes. Living in such a large, musical city with people from all over the world was a fantastic way to broaden my world views of people, language, and music. As a musician, there were countless opportunities for growing musically and meeting fellow musicians who just love what they do. The faculty were always enthusiastic and pushing us out of our comfort zones to talk with people and expand our German-speaking skills. I learned so much and was able to travel and experience Austrian culture first-hand. I would not trade my experiences for anything! So glad to have traveled on this abroad program and I would suggest it to anyone interested, especially music-oriented students.

Opportunity to last a Lifetime!

The experience offered to me at Central College was amazing and one that I have come to truly appreciate in gaining more exposure to alternatives. Up until that point, my only experience with international travel and learning was my Central experience so I assumed all were outstanding. This is not the case. The points that set Central apart include complete integration with University of Vienna students and classes, very limited English speaking, roommates who are native Austrians or with whom your shared language is German. You really learn the language here! This is not a group of Americans learning German in a foreign speaking country and your accrued language skill is a direct reflection of that. I recently audited some college level courses at my local university just for fun and my instructors could not believe that I had not spoken German in nearly 20 years because it came back to me very quickly. One said, "You must have had a tremendous foundational grounding in the language to pick it up like this again!" I smiled and proudly said, "I have Central to thank for that!"

Spain in a Nutshell

Spain is a fantastic to study abroad. I have grown so much as a person over the last 4 months. The director and her support staff and fantastic and I am very sad to leave them. The school used by Central is good. The professors and nice and know how to teach foreign students; they are very good at explaining questions and concepts to students. The housing is fine, depending on the host family it could be fantastic, touch and go, or just fine. Even though myself and some of my friends had a few problems with ourhost families over the semester I enjoyed living with a host family because it helped me to more fully understand and appreciate the Spanish culture.

Overall, studying abroad in Granada, Spain has been a fantastic experience and I recommend it to anyone!

Time of My Life!

I had so much fun during my semester in London through Central's Study Abroad program. I learned so much about myself, gained teaching experience through an internship, met lots of new friends, and learned a lot through my classes. I was able to travel all over Europe on the weekends and during spring break. These experiences are ones that I wouldn't trade for anything in the world!

Take time to immerse yourself and discover something new!

My semester abroad here in Granada has been amazing! I never thought I would leave the small town life in Iowa as I grew up on a farm. But, it just so happened a semester 'freed' up for me so I dove in and applied for this program.
My time here has truly helped me find my inner being and has helped me grow as a person. Though you are able to depend on your new friends and staff abroad, you're also able to find just how independent you can be.
Taking class every day for 4 hours hasn't been bad at all. I'm in the Intensive program and have class from 9am-1pm every day Monday-Friday. This class has really helped improve my Spanish and I am feeling more comfortable using the language.
Each day brings something new as you learn the Monday-Friday and weekend habits of the locals. And, having the chance to live out the culture the 4 months I've been here has been such a learning experience! There is never a dull moment. From test tasting olive oil and wine and getting to see a Flamenco show and a bull fight, it has been worth every minute!
Of course when you study abroad, you may encounter difficulties along the way, but no matter what life brings there will be easy and hard times. And remember you people around you who can and are willing to help you get through any difficult times. You just need to stay positive and believe in yourself, and everything will be okay! Trust me!
So what are you waiting for? Take the next step towards learning and living a strong, rich culture in Granada, Spain!

Memories to Last a Lifetime

Studying abroad in London changed my entire outlook on life. While abroad I learned independence, self-management, and spontaneity. I took part in an their internship program where I worked three days a week in a PR office. My internship really allowed me to be fully immersed in the culture of England. I also took 3 college courses while abroad. I had 3 day weekends ever weekend which allowed me to travel to over 7 different countries. To top it all off I met my husband to be! I couldn't be more pleased with CCA and would recommend the experience to anyone who asks!

Bangor, Wales ROCKS!

Making the decision to study abroad was a difficult one but resulted in great experiences in great relationships. Bangor is the perfect mix of night life, a social scene and academic excellence. The program director was wonderful and supportive and the excursions were meaningful and memorable. We had tons of opportunity to travel on our own as well. I was able to visit London, Liverpool, Bath, Stonehenge and many other great places.

Tecwyn made this Experience Great

Tecwyn, the Bangor Study Abroad Program Director, was funny, charming and informative. Most of the time he was like a friend, but everyone respected him so there was still order. He showed us some of the best sites in Wales and helped us with academic schedules.
