Go Tokyo!

Tokyo is one of the most unique cities in the world and I'm still sad that my two-month internship had to end... I really wish it lasted! Japanese working culture alone, being immersed in it (as cliche as it may sound) has supported my personal development. I'm truly grateful to CRCC Asia since they matched me up with a company who provided me the best time of my life, literally. Whether it was experiencing long working hours or eating habitually in old local restaurants, I took a lot from it and I wish I could go back in time and repeat the internship, honestly.

Many people are afraid of travelling such distance and I was no different. I did my research, I felt brave and lo and behold, it worked in my favor. For anyone thinking about it, do it!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Touring around Fukushima Daiichi nuclear Disaster (yes, the same place that the Power Plant exploded in 2011!) My colleague set up his own tour called Fukushima Disasaster Area Zone tour. I know for a fact that many people, inclufing native Japanese, still have a misunderstanding about this place. To have the chance to visit this prefacture, speak to locals and understand the reality of how people are trying to continue and reshape their lives is truly humbling. That day is something I will always carry with me.

CRCCA internship

I was very happy overall with going to Japan and was happy with how I was treated however I think some points to improve on would be letting the student know they will be spending more than what the program is itself. And I suppose trying to get the students more involved with events happening through CRCCA.

In the Tokyo division, there weren’t many events that interested us. It would be nice to implement the events you hold in China to have some similarities in Tokyo. But aside from that, I enjoyed my experience and the staff was very helpful when I needed help. They always provided advice if we didn’t know what we were going to do that day. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone that wants to have experience abroad and who loves it.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Probably having to stand and eat as well as no trash cans

Fun Day in Tokyo

You can't have a boring stay in Tokyo with the staff of CRCC ASIA at your side. The staff members are willing to help out and make your stay more enjoyable by creating a list of potential, exclusive activities. It has been a one-of-a-kind experience for me, and this has definitely honed my skills for when I start looking for a job. I have faced some difficulties at work and I may not have enjoyed every task they assigned me. However, it is definitely important to live up to your superiors' expectations and surpass your own limit. I found out 'persistence' is the key. Going out with a couple of my friends on the weekends was a fun adventure because we encounter things we usually don't back at home. These excursions I made with my fellow interns are the most fun I ever had during my stay in Tokyo. After the program, we still keep in touch with one another as if the program never ended.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Don't be too nervous about visiting a new country or meeting new people.
This experience is a lot more fun than you think.
It is definitely important to live up to your superiors' expectations and surpass your own limit. If they are being unclear or undecisive then it is vital to speak up.
Do things you normally wouldn't when you are traveling abroad and establish some connections that may last a lifetime.

Vietnam Internship Program Summer 2018

This internship was one of the most exhilarating experiences I've ever undertaken. I love being busy and active and this opportunity related to that lifestyle extremely effectively.

I was up and out of the apartment everyday for 8 o'clock, in work until 5/6 o'clock and then I'd often have dinner or a social gathering with the other interns and colleagues, so I'd get back to the apartment for about 10 o'clock in the evening. Then, on the weekends, I'd have a trip booked to a particular area of Vietnam; whether it be to the Cu Chi tunnels from the Vietnam War or to Vung Tao beach for a relaxing finish to a busy week. Everyday was spent doing something meaningful.

It was a highly satisfying and rewarding experience that I couldn't recommend enough.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
One time, after work, some colleagues and I (One from America and the other from New Zealand) went to a renowned insect restaurant where we'd planned to try some creepy crawlies. We ended up ordering and eating one tarantula, two geckos and four crickets. It was... interesting to say the least. :P

Brilliant learning experience

I had the most fun I've ever had during my Tokyo internship. I learned so many valuable things from my internship but also from the interns around me. It was a good lesson in independence since I was so far away from my family. I got to explore so much of the city and try so many new foods. It was a wonderful experience and it really helped boost my confidence. I learned how to overcome my fear of traveling on my own. There was always help and support when I needed it.

My internship threw me in the deep end from the beginning, but I really enjoyed that. It gave me the opportunity to learn many new skills and refine many other skills. I learned how to network and how to work independently. I was in charge of coming up with a lot of my own projects and directing articles as I wanted. It was a lot of fun.

Life Changing Experience

Interning in Vietnam with CRCC Asia changed my life. I’ve travelled a lot but this is the first time I felt at home in another country. I got placed within a media company and learnt so much so quickly. The people in Vietnam are so friendly and everything is so cheap. I did not cook once whilst I was there because it was cheaper to eat out. This experience made me realise I wanted to pursue a career in media because I loved the work so much. It gave me stronger assurance in my abilities and improved my weaker skills. I can only ever say good things about this programme and I recommend everyone take the opportunity to do it themselves. I will have fond memories of this experience for the rest of my life and I do hope to go back to Vietnam and work there again someday.

What would you improve about this program?
My only criticism is that there were a lot of pre organised things which doesn’t allow you much time to travel on the weekends

An experience of a life time!

Two months have passed and I still feel like I haven't covered the whole of Vietnam. Hanoi, HCMC, Dalat, Mekong, Halong, Ha Giang... it's a long list but only the cusp of what Vietnam has to offer. Places like Hoi An, Da Nang and Siem Reap still spring to mind.

Having done something every weekend, I already am getting re shock culture shock being back in New Zealand. The lack of bikes, people, street food and tall buildings will be a thing of the past. The thing I would miss the most would be the cheap, tasty vietnamese food. It's really become a part of my life during my stay here. As I write this, I want to say how grateful I am to be here and enjoy the fruits of this country.

During my two month finance internship, I have acquired skills of cultural agility and adaptability coming into a new country with new cultures and expectations. These skills I believe cannot be learned from staying in New Zealand all my life, so to be given the opportunity to work in Vietnam is something special.

What would you improve about this program?
Provide Taxi numbers of the drivers and information on places for SIM card reloads to the interns.
Have all cultural and networking nights planned on the weekday so it gives an opportunity for interns to travel during the weekend.

An aspiring female lawyer in China

It is not unusual for students to graduate University feeling ‘lost’ and overwhelmed. I was no different. I wanted to obtain more legal work experience and I saw this opportunity at my University's career fairs and I decided to apply for the Beijing programme. It was the best decision of my life, as now I am sure of what I want to do.

In October 2018, I started my programme. I was mesmerised by the county. China is an amazing country, with such a developed economy and vibrant culture! There is something for everyone in Beijing, from clubs, opera, fine dining and historical places!

The CRCC Asia programme was fantastic and I recommend it to everyone. The accommodation provided was at a very high standard, in a nice area, close to transportation, supermarkets and even provided a gym and swimming pool.

The CRCC Asia team did a great job matching me to the right company! I was able to work for a corporate law firm in a securities department! It was a new area of law and I was very exited! I was able to learn from the most aspirational female leaders in the legal industry!

Once a week, we had Mandarin classes, where we had the opportunity to develop our Mandarin language skills. In addition, we also had many cultural events, community events and business seminars organised by CRCC Asia.

I loved this experience so much, that I began looking for another internship in Beijing and I was able to obtain an internship at the Embassy! Moreover, after adding this experience to my LinkedIn profile, I already had many job offers from all over the world!

I strongly recommend this China internship programme as it has allowed me to gain international work experience, build up an international network of contacts, and even learn a new language in the process, which will support my goal of becoming a successful international female lawyer.

What would you improve about this program?
I believe that some of the students should have the opportunity to have more Mandarin classes per week.

An unforgettable experience which has helped me secure the next step in my career

In October 2018 I began a 2-month internship programme in Shanghai with CRCC Asia. Having just returned from China, I am now looking forward to beginning an internship in January 2019 with a London-based organisation.

My host company in Shanghai was a non-governmental organisation (NGO) which specialises in providing legal advice and expertise to other NGOs, both domestic and international. During the internship, my primary role was conducting research across several different topic areas, including foreign NGO law, social enterprise regulations, disability rights and animal welfare protections. In particular, I carried out research on laws in the UK and US in order to inform comparative legal studies between China and other countries. The internship significantly developed my legal research skills, and also provided me with experience of conducting research in a professional environment. As a result of this experience, I have decided that legal research is an area that I want to work in in the future.

During the internship, I also liaised between my host company and their partner organisations in the UK. I became particularly interested in the work of one London-based partner, A4ID, and have since secured an internship position with this organisation as a result of my experience working with them through my host company. The internship in China has therefore directly helped me reach the next step in my career by providing me with invaluable networking opportunities. My next internship will also involve legal research and I am looking forward to bringing the research skills I learnt during my internship in Shanghai to my new position, and developing these even further.

One particularly memorable part of my internship was a community law event which I attended with a colleague. The purpose of the event was to inform members of the community about the work of the local people’s court. I was interviewed by a local news channel about my thoughts on the event. The interview was broadcast as part of the event’s coverage on the local news channel and their website. Appearing on a Chinese news channel was certainly something I didn’t expect during my internship, but it was an interesting and memorable experience!

I would certainly recommend the CRCC Asia internship programme in Shanghai to graduates looking to broaden their international experience. I have found the internship to be a huge talking point in interviews, and potential employers have been genuinely interested to hear about my experience of working in China. For me, it has been critical in progressing my career and ensuring I reach the next step in pursuit of my professional goals.

What would you improve about this program?
The programme could be improved with more pre-departure support.

Interesting company, excellent classes, and nice group

The program helped me with employment because it added to why I stood out as an application written terms, then later a candidate in subsequent stages too with increased confidence. I got offered another job towards the end of my internship.

During the interview, I was able to talk about transferable skills I gained such as Facebook Advertising, which I currently apply now in the role. It was

CRCC Asia have great team members within their Shanghai staff who are kind, engaging, and funny. Also, I liked the sector-specific knowledge imparted through 5 key learning objectives.

Shanghai is an awesome city with loads to do and they actually arranged a variety of events for us to attend and take part in at regular intervals. The Chinese language teacher was one of the best I have ever had.
