Therapy Abroad in Belize

The cave tubing was awesome and I really enjoyed the pottery making and corn tortillas at the Mayan Women’s excursion. Everything was perfect, if there was one thing I could suggest it would be staying in another part of Belize in order to cut the travel down being on the bus. Days were longer with all the riding around and meals were not enjoyable on the bus. The food provided was delicious and the accommodations for the hotel were clean and safe. The staff and people were all welcoming. I would recommend this trip to others.

Pros
  • Excursions
  • Safety
  • Meals
Cons
  • Food on the bus
  • Long bus rides

Wonderful!!

This trip was so impactful and I loved getting to know the country and culture! I feel like I’ve made an impact on the people I worked with and it was very rewarding. The only thing was how much time we had to spend on the bus which was a lot and I feel like there were things that could’ve been done to make it so we were on the bus less. I also would’ve appreciated a slightly better packing list or a more concrete itinerary so I could’ve packed better for this trip. Luckily I was able to make the things I had work or I was able to buy something. Besides those 2 things I loved being here!!

Great time!

It was a great experience helping others and experiencing a new country! I went with my university as a service trip to give physical therapy to people in need and who do not have access to that service. It was a really great trip to Belize as we got to work with many people, see different cities, and go on different excursions such as tubing through a cave and a cultural experience. I would recommend this to any groups looking to give back and try something new. I will forever remember this time.

Angelly's Review- High Point University DPT

I think this trip was incredibly special and truly opened my eyes to the privileges of living in America. We got to visit a public hospital and learn about what is available for residents of Belize in terms of healthcare which I think made me realize how much of an impact we are making. I think this trip is a great way for students in any kind of healthcare profession to realize that they are making an impact whether they believe it or not. As a first year physical therapy student, it also helped me understand what patient population I'd be most interested in treating.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I think the most nerve-racking moment was treating patients without a full background history or with language barriers. Fortunately, we had staff that were able to translate for us and we were given long appointment times in order to gather all the information we needed as well as do a full treatment.
Pros
  • FOOD
  • memories
  • patient experience
Cons
  • long bus rides
  • temperature- it was hot!

Addy’s Review

This is one of the best trips I have ever been on. I got a lot of hands-on experience with screenings, speech therapy goals, and SOAP notes. This was a very immersive trip and I could not be more happy with my time here. Even though the work was hard, it provided me with a lot more insight than when I came in. We were able to go into the schools where the kids we worked with went which was one of my favorite parts. It was so neat to see where they went to school. I am so thankful for this experience

What was your funniest moment?
During screenings, I was doing a literacy part of the test and I used a book with a narwhal and a jellyfish. The child I was doing a screening on loved this book. The narwhal and jellyfish were getting waffles at the end and the child says “where the hell are they getting waffles??!” I have never laughed harder.
Pros
  • The weather
  • The food
  • Gaining experience
Cons
  • Mosquitos
  • Mosquitos

My review

I really enjoyed this experience. I had so much fun learning more about culture, eating food, doing assessments, camp, sightseeing. One thing that I liked most was doing the camp and also completing assessments. I loved making connections with the kids but also their parents. I do wish that camp was longer, I think camp should be 5 days. I enjoying doing a fun activity in the evening to conclude the day. I liked trying new foods. I also liked learning more about the culture. This trip was so fun. I would do another one for sure!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
At first I was nervous about the screening assessment because I didn’t know what to do. After the first day it was a little rough but the second day was a lot better.
Pros
  • Learning about culture
  • Having fun night activities
  • New food
Cons
  • Leaving and going home
  • Camp not being long enough
  • Not long enough trip

Avery’s Review

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with Therapy Abroad. The accommodations were good and relatively clean. I liked having an itinerary however, at times it was hard to stick to it with changing plans, leaving little free time during our scheduled down time. As for food, I was thankful to have options for most meals. Our leaders were excellent and ensured we were safe and feeling well the whole time. I learned so much from this trip and am so thankful to have had this experience. I hope to have an opportunity like this again in the future.

Pros
  • Plantains
  • More plantains
  • When people gave me their plantains

Loved every second!

This was a once in a lifetime experience! You make memories for life and learn so it, it’s value is immeasurable. You gain so much clinical experience and learn about cultural competencies along the way. Along with experience, you enjoy all the beauties and culture that Belize has to offer. I would do this trip all over again in a heartbeat. I have learned so much truly and this has shaped my experience as a future SLP and clinician. This has helped me grow so much within my field and has provided me with opportunities I never thought would be possible!

Great trip

The location of this trip was a dream. The beach was incredible and it was in the center of tons of shops and restaurants. Academically, I learned so much about the field and about myself on this trip. I learned how to become flexible with time and materials when giving speech therapy. It was a wonderful experience. The students were exceptionally polite and it was clear how grateful these teachers were to have our help. They went out of their way to help us be successful in providing services.

Turks and Caicos Therapy Abroad

I had an amazing experience with Therapy Abroad! It was extremely rewarding to be able to rule out hearing loss for children with speech and language disorders. Because there are no audiologists on the islands, I know that our work was critical for the children and adults of TCI. We were able to empower people with answers about their own hearing status or that of their students.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Conch
Pros
  • Provided services for individuals with little-no access to audiology care
  • Experienced a new culture and place
  • Created meaningful relationships
