Bridging Borders Through Language: A Worthwhile Teaching Experience

Participating in the English Language Teaching Program was both a meaningful and transformative experience. It went beyond grammar and vocabulary, it became a platform for human connection, empathy, and growth.
The program offered me a unique opportunity to teach students from regions affected by war, famine, or social unrest. Watching their dedication to learning, despite the challenges they faced, was deeply inspiring. Through our sessions, I didn’t just teach English, I witnessed resilience, built cross-cultural friendships, and grew as a global educator.
Of course, there were hurdles, technical issues, time zone mismatches, and moments of low engagement. But these were far outweighed by the joy of seeing a student use a new word confidently or hearing laughter over a misunderstood phrase.

What was your funniest moment?
During a vocabulary lesson, I asked a student to use the word "bark" in a sentence. He proudly said, "My father barks at night when he is tired." I paused, trying not to laugh, then gently explained the two meanings of "bark." We all had a good laugh together!
Pros
  • One of the biggest benefits was interacting with students from different countries and cultures. It broadened my worldview and deepened my empathy as a teacher and human being.
  • The program helped me refine my communication and instructional strategies, especially in simplifying complex grammar rules for students at varying proficiency levels.
  • Teaching online helped me become more comfortable using digital tools and managing virtual classrooms effectively—skills that are valuable beyond just this program.
Cons
  • On several occasions, poor internet disrupted classes, especially for students in conflict or disaster-prone areas.
  • Some students, especially in large group sessions, were shy or hesitant to participate actively, which made it harder to gauge their progress.
  • Coordinating sessions across time zones was a bit challenging, especially when scheduling make-up classes or feedback sessions.

Comprehensive and Flexible TESOL Training Experience

I am very grateful that I made the right decision to take this course. Teaching English as a Second Language was never my forte. Never in my wildest dreams did I see myself teaching English, as I am a numbers person—I love Math. But as I went through my dashboard and explored the course modules, a spark of interest began to ignite in me.

When I started studying, I realized that even though I’ve been teaching for a long time, I was fascinated by the details of how to properly teach beginners. The teaching styles, approaches, and motivations presented were well-suited to my learners—something I had never fully realized before. It gave me a sense of satisfaction and a deeper understanding that there is always room to improve my teaching skills.

Every module felt like a journey of rediscovering and discovering new knowledge.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
One surprising moment was when I found myself genuinely enjoying a grammar lesson! As someone who has always been more inclined to numbers and formulas, I never expected to be so engaged with sentence structures and language functions. The interactive way the modules broke down teaching techniques made even the "scariest" topics feel manageable—and even fun! It sparked a realization that teaching ESL isn’t just about language; it’s about strategy, empathy, and creativity.
Pros
  • I could study at my own convenience, which made balancing my schedule easy and stress-free.
  • The modules offered real classroom applications, especially helpful for beginner-level learners.
  • It shifted my perspective and built my confidence in teaching English, even as someone who comes from a Math background.
Cons
  • I wish that there is a printable or downloadable copy of all modules.
  • I wish that there are free printable or downloadble copy of recommended flashcards.
  • Copy of sample of activities or worksheets (that this program recommends).

Inadequate Assessment of Oral English in TESOL Course

As a non-English major older student, I was extremely excited to have obtained the qualification certificate through my learning. However, I must point out that the oral English testing for students was not included in the course, and the learning was mostly theoretical. Even after completing the course and passing the final exam, I might not necessarily be competent as a TESOL teacher. Nonetheless, I am still delighted to have systematically learned methods of teaching English in this course. hoping becoming a private English teacher in my country one day.

TESOL Certification Course Review

I greatly enjoyed completing this course. The modules were engaging and specific, and I did not find any of the content difficult to grasp. The use of in-classroom videos was helpful, there were a few, fun interactive elements, and it did not feel overwhelming to complete the course quickly. In particular, I found the videos from Teacher Jay to be very charming and helpful, as he had a teaching style I'd love to emulate when I begin teaching myself. Overall, I am very happy with the course seeing as it was cheap, effective, and I now feel prepared to take on a classroom and teach English.

In My New Life, I Teach English in Japan

After teaching in China for about 20 years, I finally had the idea of starting a new life overseas. So, I obtained my TESOL certificate and began my great life adventure. My first stop was Japan, a unique country. Unlike many of my friends who live and teach in Southeast Asia, the distinct culture here and the less widespread English education make being an English teacher a very special experience. I love teaching in the classroom, and I also love exploring different worlds. I hope to bring English to various students and also to show the world to more people.

What was your funniest moment?
"Yes" Doesn't Always Mean "Yes": When you ask students, "Do you understand?", all of them nod and say "Yes!" You assume they've all grasped it, but when you do an exercise, you discover that many haven't fully understood. You later realize that in Japan, "Yes" sometimes simply means "I'm listening" or "I understand what you're saying," rather than "I've comprehended all the content." You might jokingly mock yourself, "So, the meaning of 'Yes' is actually so profound!

Never Appreciated TESOL Certification Like This!

To begin with, I hold a degree in Secondary Education with a major in English. This being said, I am familiar with most, if not all, of the course modules or topics. Surprisingly, I still found the entire course to be enlightening and productive. I gained fresh insights into teaching English, especially its basic yet often overlooked components. I do not regret taking this course, which I consider to be heaven-sent. I hope that more English teachers like me get to know and enroll in this course.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take things slowly but surely.
Pros
  • Self-paced
  • Comprehensive content
  • User-friendly platform
Cons
  • None

How I found it

Reflecting on my TEFL learning journey, I am overwhelmed with gratitude and pride. Earning my TEFL certificate has not only equipped me with the skills to teach English as a foreign language, but it has also transformed me on a personal level. I embarked on this journey with curiosity and hope, and now I look back with a sense of deep accomplishment.

The program exceeded all my expectations in both content and structure. The curriculum was comprehensive and well-organized, covering all the essential aspects of English language teaching—from grammar instruction and classroom management to lesson planning and cultural awareness. Every module was engaging, interactive, and thoughtfully designed to ensure that we not only absorbed the theory but also had opportunities to apply it in practical ways.

One of the most valuable parts of my learning experience was how the program encouraged reflection and creativity. I found myself thinking deeply about how to connect with students from diverse backgrounds and how to tailor lessons to different learning styles. Through peer discussions, tutor feedback, and various interactive tasks, I developed confidence in my ability to step into a classroom and make a difference.

I also appreciated the flexibility of the online platform. It allowed me to learn at my own pace and fit my studies around my daily responsibilities. The support from the TEFL staff was outstanding—any questions I had were answered promptly and with care. It never felt like I was doing this alone; there was always someone cheering me on and guiding me forward.

Achieving this certification feels like unlocking a door to a world full of possibilities. I am incredibly thankful for the knowledge I’ve gained and the encouragement I’ve received throughout this process. It’s not just a piece of paper—it's a symbol of growth, hard work, and resilience. I now feel empowered to teach English anywhere in the world, to engage with different cultures, and to share in the joy of helping others achieve their language goals.

There were, of course, moments of challenge—days when grammar rules made my head spin or when I worried about whether I’d ever master the perfect lesson plan. But those moments were outweighed by the sense of progress and the growing belief in my ability to succeed. And now, having completed the program, I can say with full confidence that it was all worth it.

If you’re considering embarking on a TEFL journey, I can honestly say: go for it. This experience has opened my mind, enriched my skills, and given me a profound sense of purpose. I am proud of myself, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity. This certificate is more than an achievement—it’s the beginning of an exciting new chapter.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-wracking moment of my TEFL journey was delivering my first mock lesson. My hands were shaking, my mind blanked for a second, and I felt completely exposed. But I took a breath, improvised, and pushed through. That scary moment turned into a huge confidence boost—and it reminded me that growth always begins at the edge of your comfort zone.
Pros
  • Flexible learning
  • supportive staff
  • comprehensive content
Cons
  • challenging grammar units
  • limited live interaction
  • self motivation required
