Volunteering with Elephant - Jaipur

Hi All. This was my first time. I chose to volunteer here because I wanted to work with animals and be in a familiar country.
The communication was handled seamless by Sukret much before I travelled. All responses were prompt and Sukret was quite considerate as he took extra care to highlight, the weather, the need to carry water on the day denoted for sightseeing.
I chose to stay out on my own however was picked up and dropped off every day , on time.
Shekhar, the driver was a very nice person. Not only did he drive safely, he bargained for me at local fruit stalls without me even asking for it. He took me sightseeing being mindful of what I would enjoy which he picked up on his own. He would give the little children in the village a few bucks to buy candy for themselves and always spoke respectfully and patiently. I’m glad I got to meet him.
Now, the elephants. The mahouts involved with the elephants. It’s was a wonderful experience to be in such close contact of such a big animal having no previous experience under the supervision of the staff, Rohit and the mahouts.
I never felt unsafe, as a woman, as the only volunteer in a village.
They are all individuals, in their own person and to observe their interaction with the elephants was actually quite cool.
The elephants I worked with were gentle, except for one. She was playful too. As with animals, one must respect their boundaries.
All in all, the one week that I spent there was very well planned with enough work, enough opportunities to take initiative and enough free time to do your own thing.
The people I worked with were wonderful and I am glad to have met them.
I am an Hindi speaking person so please do note that language was not a barrier for me. The staff of VWI do speak English though.
I urge one to visit with an open mind as it is a developing country and the sights of the city’s historical grandeur juxtaposed with the current reality can take a while to digest.

I would want to go back again sometime and am grateful for this experience

Pros
  • Well planned
  • Punctuality
  • The volunteering experience itself
Cons
  • The cons of an underdeveloped country

Women Empowerment Program

all was well organised. I had just to come make english course and enjoy.
The guest house family take care of me when I was a little sick. Sukret take me to the doctor. The rickshaw was cool like a grandparents. The girls in the center were absolutely kind with me.
Thanks to Sukret I had the opportunity to go seeing the Taj Mahal!!!
A wonderful thing to do in life and if we have the possibility to do it we must do it.
This is so intense we can only learn more about life. The cultural difference is so powerful

English and maths with the children

It was an amazing experience! The children are lovely, well educated and disciplined. I was very impressed about the organisation of the school.
The staff is very helpful and supportive.
I was helping the teacher with english and maths. Every week you get the schedule for the entire week and you know which topic will be covered during english or maths.
I spent the holi day at the school playing with the kids and the staff and it was an unforgettable experience! I Highly recommend this project.

Lovely program

Beautiful experience in close contact with elephants. We learned to clean the space in which they live, wash the elephants, feed them and take care of them. It was sometimes a tough job especially to wake up very early in the morning but it was definitely worth it. I never thought I'd find out that elephants are much closer to humans than you think. They know how to be very intelligent and also affectionate. I never felt threatened or in danger with them. Thanks for this wonderful experience, I recommend it to anyone who wants to be in contact with animals.

Unforgettable expetience!!

It was an unforgettable experience! I've been working on the elephants and I ve learned to accuse them, talk to them, feed them, have lived in a real Indian Home, ate Indian food, and I learned to understand Indian culture! I recommend it! Every morning I woke up to help these animals! Working with them and seeing the families and children of the village made me realize the real meaning of life: Always smiling!
I recommend this programme because is most complete and the guides are very competent!

Very nice

Came here as a solo traveler for 10 days and loved my experience. The local people are nice and the staff is always there if you need any help. Would recommend 100%! Great teaching experience for children and for older woman and great food/beverages. Even if you don’t speak the language, the staff will make sure the communication between you and the students is okay. Three hours per day, you go to the center, which is located closely to the accommodation, and teach the course of your choice. Very nice experience :)

Trip of my life

I loved the one month I spent with this program. The staff and the children were amazing. It certainly was the experience of a lifetime and I will probably think about this trip every single day for many many years to come. It certainly will be very hard to top. I haven't been bored for one second and would love to stay much longer if I could. I will miss you all and your nice smiles and the future volunteers that will come will be very lucky to get to spend time with you all.

Superb experience

I was in jaipur for the medical program with Volunteering with india. We could assist to the medical checkup of youngsters from other states who were found working in factories and now are temporarily living, learning and playing at the NGO center. After that we went to the street for medical checkups inside an equipped ambulance (bus-ambulance). The Bus-Ambulance is divided in two parts, First for Doctor and second for pharmacist. It was a great experience and I was able to learn from other fields of the volunteer programs.

What would you improve about this program?
Nothing, This was superb. not need to improve anything in this program.

Best time in my life

Mobile medicine is a nice idea for local people who are in need or who live in some rural areas. During the experience of medical project here, I had chance to understand the local medical conditions and problems in India. I could discuss those problems with local workers, and tried to find a better ways of volunteering. I could participate in the process of medical consultation, preparing and giving medicine.
After a strong cultural impact due to diversity in the approach with the patient, inadequate medical devices and a huge language barrier I found a wonderful team that taught me to recognize the associations of Indian drugs, the most common diseases in India and to deliver medicines to patients.
So, even without ‘standard’ medical acts, I felt part of the team and it just made me feel like I was doing something.
Definitely I would do this experience a million times again.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Nothing , it is superb. This was the best experience in my life. i Can't forget it.

Life time experience

The medical program with Volunteering with India is an incredible adventure on a bus-ambulance in which volunteers help the medical and pharmacist in assisting rural areas of Jaipur that otherwise would not have access to treatment.
We also checked the physical conditions of children in the village once a week. I have also learned some local language to make a better interaction with local people. I really learned a lot by the observation and enjoyed these days! We also had similar program in my hometown, and I will bring my experience back to make a better medical service.
I was so proud of myself at the first time that I finished the all process of preparing medicine and giving them to the patients by their language. This is my life time experience.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
it is not necessary to be a medical student in this program.
