Making A Change

Last year at this time my life seemed turned upside down.
Instead of my usual smile I was was full of tears and a frown.
I knew I needed to do something and make a big change.
That's when I did my research and contacted ITA.

I had been teaching for seven years in a second grade classroom,
but I wanted to do something different. I needed something new.
I was instantly hooked up with a fantastic adviser by the name of Jeff.
He wanted to know where I was interested in going and said he'd help with the rest.

He stuck to his work and helped me right up until the class began.
My smile was coming back and I was becoming a huge ITA fan.
When class began I felt like a kid in a candy shop.
I was looking forward to it and which of the 150 countries I'd make my first stop!

The possibilities were endless and the teacher of the class was great.
She had been all over the world teaching, had experience, and wanted us to relate!
She made us all become attentive in class and follow the schedule,
however understanding and wanting us to be successful.

She had weekly office hours and live webinars.
She wanted to know all her students both near and far.
Her feedback was clear and very thorough, which was nice.
The teacher was focused, driven, and gave awesome advice.

Of course there were times when I wondered if I was making the right choice.
I was leaving an established career said a tiny voice!
The voice was my doubt when I had a rough week of class and teaching.
It made me question if I had taken on to much and reminded me frequently.
I pushed this voice aside, I had to...
because I was insistent on teaching someplace new!

An 11 week class is as easy as one, two, and three!!!
That is, if you really want to go abroad, see the world, and teach.
The world is open for exploration and growth.
And let's face it ITA made me want to do both!

However the voice returned right before I got on the plane.
Asking me if I was certain of this massively big change?
Had I picked the right city, the right roommates, packed the right clothes?!?!
All I could do was laugh, shrug my shoulders, say we shall see, and who knows!!!!

I have now moved abroad and teach in an international school.
I get to see a new part of the world while still teaching, which is what I love to do!
Each day I wake up in the city of Prague.
Realizing my dream became a reality and I'm no longer dazed or in a fog.

I have met new people, am experiencing new things,
all while making a life choice to set new goals and follow my dreams!
ITA has even visited here, which was a huge extra bonus!
It made me feel important, special, and noticed.

There are many of us around the world that have worked with ITA.
And as you can see I have many positive things to say!
So open your minds at this amazing opportunity.
Learn from a company that will make you feel at home, just as they did me!

What would you improve about this program?
If there is one thing I would change about this program it would be the ability to have more interaction with the other students who were a part of my online class. I felt that the students didn't seem to want to do the extra webinars and gave simplistic answers to each weeks topics in the discussion forum. I think if the teacher also commented on these topics in the forum more participation would have occurred. The teacher was wonderful, as I pointed out, but I feel this could have enhanced the class and participation even more. I wanted to learn more about the other students and where they were thinking of teaching and what made them want to take the course.

Great TEFL course

I took the course in Barva, Costa Rica and it was excellent. The instructors were fantastic, and I felt it really prepared me as much as possible for teaching. We had the opportunity to do a lot of practice teaching with actual students, which was so helpful. The director of this school is incredible and the job placement assistance was invaluable. Also the staff at International TEFL were so helpful, easy to communicate with, and knowledgeable.

What would you improve about this program?
The textbook was not very helpful.

Quality online course

The online course had weekly modules that were informative and had helpful links and videos to related topics. Each week a written project was due that solidified the student's understanding of the material. There was some peer interaction and peer work was posted for everyone to review which was helpful. Instructor responded to all questions in a timely manner. Overall good quality and price. Thank you!

What would you improve about this program?
Observation hours were a requirement which was great. I would have liked more guidance on how to make the most of this time. Also the course was mostly teaching theory but didn't have much info on specific things to use in a classroom and how to run a classroom for us beginners.

Online

The online class is just… an online class. It was very straightforward. Each week focused on different aspects to teaching, and each week we were tested on the reading material. All very doable.

Email was the main form of communication. Postings for my class held no interaction. Any questions I had were quickly answered though email.

The most enjoyable part of the online course was the lectures. Each month there would be a variety of lectures available to students. Lecture topics ranged from discussions on getting ready to teach in different areas around the world to different books that may interest different levels of students. These lectures gave me a chance to learn more through different experiences. It was also a time to chat with other students and teachers.

Overall, I felt that it was a good program to learn the basics to teaching abroad.

What would you improve about this program?
It is true that no program is perfect. I would have liked more interaction with my peers, and I would have like the teacher's availability to alternate from time to time. I felt that I was at a disadvantage because of the time difference. I missed all the "group chats."

Good Program

I took the online course and it permited me to complete my classes with the movility to finish them when I moved from America to Europe. It can be challenging, but then again you want a curriculum worth your time and effort. As for the cost, I found much cheaper programs afterwards, but their material was full of typos and you could tell it was of much lesser quality. I found a job on my own so I don't know if the job assistance bit of this program is good, but overall I am quite happy with it all. :)

What would you improve about this program?
When answering back emails I got a reply back, but instead of answering straight away I got sent to links which I could not open on my iphone. I would have liked for the staff to take the time to at least copy/paste the answer I needed on the email and not making me open links to things that can't be accessed on a smartphone.

Great schooling. I feel prepared!

I just finished the part-time, 11-week course. It was tougher than I thought it would be which is why it was great. I felt it really prepared me for what is to come. I likely spent an average of 15 hours a week on my weekly reading & tasks. Some weeks were easier than others, but every week offered enough challenge. The Practicum is a very important aspect as this is where you get to put it all into practice if you're lucky enough to teach and not just watch, as I was. It will also give you taste for it -- do you like teaching or not? Kids or adults? One-on-one or groups? I would recommend this program (and have!) to anyone interested in TEFL training.

What would you improve about this program?
I haven't yet worked with the job guidance folks so I can't comment on that but I am hoping there is bona Fidel assistance. I don't have a degree and I feel like I might be very limited with my options when choosing where to go.

Fantastic course and amazing resources

I took the course from ITA in 2012 and learned so much from my instructor Tyler. The resources you gain will work for your whole career and it's great to see a good association for alumni! I liked the program so much that my husband was influenced to take the course as well.

This may have been just my class, but I wish there was more interaction between the students during the course online - I looked forward to gaining more friends throughout our lessons but instead, I now interact more as an alumnus with others who've finished!

If you're considering teaching in Costa Rica.. DO IT!

For four years, my dream had been to move to Costa Rica to teach English after I graduated college. In July 2014, International TEFL Academy helped my dream come true!
When I first found ITA online, I sent in my information and immediately got a call from an advisor. Over the next several months, he patiently answered all my questions (there were a LOT) and made me feel completely at ease about the whole process. He constantly sent me articles and other references that answered all the questions I had been asking myself. When I finally decided to sign up for the class, he was so excited for me and gave me all the details I needed to take the next step.
After that, the head of the TEFL school in Heredia, Costa Rica got in contact with me to discuss housing and other details. In the months leading up to my arrival in Costa Rica, he stayed in contact with me and made sure all my questions were answered and any issues were addressed.
I arrived in Costa Rica on July 3, 2014. I was advised to get there a few days before the course started so I could get to know the other students in the course. Unfortunately, nobody else got there early, so I wasn't able to meet anyone before the course started on Monday. It was a long weekend alone and it made me want to leave, but I'm so glad I didn't. As soon as the course started I loved it. I loved the people, the atmosphere in the classroom, the instructors, and the excitement that comes with the beginning of any new experience. The course was intense, but English and grammar come easy to me so I didn't find it too difficult. I was most nervous about practical teaching, but that ended up being one of my favorite things! The course required a lot of work, but the instructors were amazing and taught everything in such a fun way that I forgot I was even in class. The four weeks flew by and, surprisingly, I felt completely prepared to teach an actual English class at an actual school. I traveled for two weeks, and then got a job at an English school called Idiomas Mundiales. I teach 25 hours a week, which is considered full-time for a teacher in Costa Rica. I teach Monday night, Tuesday, Wednesday night, Thursday, and Saturday morning, which leaves Saturday afternoon to Monday afternoon for traveling. I'd rather not work Saturdays, but it's really a perfect schedule for me.
I love everything about this experience. I've met some really great people and been to some amazing places. I've also learned a lot of Spanish, which I'm excited to improve over the next few months and then hopefully be able to use it when I find a job back in the States. The hardest part about being here is missing my life back home, but I know coming here was the right decision and I'm so glad I did!

What would you improve about this program?
If I could change one thing, it would be to cancel the nighttime practical teaching. It ended at eight, but I lived far away so I usually didn't get home until nine.

A Great Investment

I chose International TEFL Academy because it seemed like the best source to get a TEFL certificate online. I was not disappointed. I called and emailed to make sure that what I was investing in was right and everyone was so helpful. The emails and phone calls were always friendly and helpful.

For the online course every week you have to turn in homework/lessons or quizzes and give some feedback on the group board. It was never too much and now that I'm teaching I realize how wonderful all of that was because I feel prepared. Overall I'm so glad I choose to get my online TEFL certificate through International TEFL Academy.

What would you improve about this program?
I can't think of anything specific that I didn't like about the program.

ITA Review

First of all, I have to say that I am so glad that I chose to get TEFL Certified through the ITA! I took the 11 week online course during my last semester of college. It was a challenge to stack that much more homework into my schedule every week, but it was definitely doable! From the very start of contacting ITA with interest in the program, I received personalized feedback and attention from my advisor through email. Whenever I had a question or concern, my advisor was always very quick to respond. Once I started the course, my professor was outstanding in helping me whenever I had a question or was confused about the coursework. The way the online classes are set up is very user friendly and easy to navigate, making it simple to get on and get the coursework done every week. I spent about 10 hours per week completing the units and homework. After I competed the online course, I did my required 20 practicum hours at three different locations near where I lived at the time. Each place I went to observe and student teach was a wonderful experience. The online ITA course really did a great job preparing me to teach in a real classroom. Another wonderful thing about ITA, even after you move abroad, they don't forget you! They have really great Facebook pages for the ITA alumni that connect you to other alumni that are teaching in the same country as you, making it where it's really easy to make new friends in your new country who are doing the same thing you are! Lastly, the ITA staff is incredible at helping with your job search and making your résumé and they are always ready to help you out!

What would you improve about this program?
The only thing I would change would be to make more space in the online webinars! They only allow a small group of people in each one and it seemed like they were always full by the time I opened the email about them. The webinars are available to listen to after they are over, but if you want to be involved in them, you have to act extremely fast to save your spot!
