Atlantis Project in the Azores

My experience with the Atlantis Project was one of the most enriching experiences in a hospital and clinical environment I ever had. In the shorter term that I was able to experience being alongside healthcare professionals, I was able to visit multiple departments in the hospital, witness a cesarean section, multiple realignment surgeries, pediatric care, and much more. The doctors and nurses I shadowed and spent time with were not only some of the most friendly staff I met, but they also were very knowledgeable and caring about their patients and the students that shadowed in their program. I learned some new things in the techniques I witnessed in surgery, and got to see how some of newer technologies in the cardiac and pulmonary departments were implemented. The guide we also had that helped us adjust to some of the cultural differences was so friendly and knowledgeable as well, and we felt right at home being as close to the hospital as we were. I highly recommend checking out what the Atlantis Project offers and encourage students with all levels of shadowing experience to apply!

What would you improve about this program?
I would definitely hope to have a longer term to experience the benefits and shadowing hours beyond that one week I traveled. I would also like to ask if for future trips, scholarships/financial aid could be offered for one week experiences too.

Excellent Pre-health Shadowing Experience!

I participated in one of Atlantis Project's five week programs. I spent 3 weeks in Toledo, Spain and 2 weeks in Albacete. We spent five days per week shadowing doctors of various specialties. In addition to this we usually went on one or two cultural adventures each week. One day per weekend we would embark on group trips to nearby cities where activities would be planned for us. These trips were always a great time!! I highly encourage anyone interested in expanding their knowledge of global healthcare or anyone looking for a fun and unique opportunity to check out Atlantis Project!!!

What would you improve about this program?
The summer in Spain is very warm, especially in Toledo and Albacete. The housing was not air conditioned even during the days that pushed 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The AP staff did provide us with small fans when we complained though and did what they could to accommodate us in every other way.

The Best Summer in A Coruña

I was lucky enough to participate in the Atlantis Project European Shadowing Program this past summer in A Coruña, Spain. I would HIGHLY encourage students to look into applying for the program. I had one of the most amazing experiences of my life and made friends that will last a lifetime. Each day was spent shadowing phenomenal doctors and teaching english to both residents and attending physicians. Over the summer I gained a better sense of what the daily life of a physician is like and what I may want to pursue a career in in the future. The doctors were wonderful and always willing to teach. Cultural Excursions are also provided each week allowing the Fellows to learn about their new home country during their time abroad. We were also able to teach English to give back to the hospital a few days a week, which was amazing. I know that going forward with my medical school applications in the next year I will be able to discuss both medical and ethical aspects of what I learned in essays and interviews as well have several great anecdotes to share.

Best experience of my life!

I took part in a two-week session of the Atlantis Project last June. I always wanted to go abroad but knew that I would not be able to during the school year due to my double major and extra curricular activities. When I first heard about the Atlantis Project I knew that it was the perfect opportunity to not only go abroad to a country I have never visited before but also to get more hospital experience. The application for the program was very straightforward and easy to fill out. I was also happy to see how many options there were to choose from in terms of dates, lengths of the program, and places to travel. I chose to go to the Canary Islands in Spain (the island of Tenerife) because I have studied Spanish for a long time and knew that it would be a great opportunity to practice the language.
When I first got to Tenerife, I was happy to see that everyone in the program got their own room and bathroom at the Residencia. There were three directors which helped us figure out where everything was and how to get places such as the hospital. It was very easy to get to the hospital and it was quite close to the Residencia. One of my favorite parts of the program was that we got to give our preferences for fields that we wanted to shadow doctors in. This let me explore multiple fields and helped me confirm what fields I want to go into in the future. The doctors were also extremely nice and even though a lot of doctor-patient conversations were in Spanish, they still translated what was happening especially when they were using medical terms that I could not understand. The hospital itself was also very nice and it was so exciting to wake up every morning and go there.
After our hospital hours, some students took part in a volunteer opportunity during which they taught English to Spanish speakers. Other students went out to the town to have lunch together, explored new places, went to shops, or played sports outside the Residencia. A lot of days we were taken to have group dinners together and go on excursions. The excursions were truly amazing and included activities such as whale watching, hiking, exploring a cave, a tour of a vineyard, a flamenco show, and visiting beaches on the island.
The Atlantis Project is honestly the perfect pre-health summer program. It was one of the most fun experiences I have ever had while also learning so much about medicine. I highly encourage everyone I know to apply and am going again myself this summer!

Atlantis Project Review

The Atlantis Project was easily one of the most rewarding experienced of my college career. I don't know of any other program that allows you to not only shadow doctors and nurses but also experience a whole new culture and health care system. Our day to day was always full of different activities ranging from exploring the beaches of Gran Canaria to visiting the different villages and cities on the islands full of history and culture. Monday through friday the day would start with going to the hospital, where we would stay until 1 or 2 in the afternoon. I got to shadow in pediatric emergency and nephrology, which were both great experiences! The doctors and nurses were all very welcoming and willing to let us observe their day to day and teach us about their jobs. The hospital was also the best place to practice the language, since a lot of staff felt more comfortable speaking in their own language and patients usually did not speak any english. After shadowing, we would either have a few hours of free time to explore Las Palmas or go to the beach or we would teach Base5 classes. Base5 was great because it gave us a chance to give back by teaching the hospital staff english. It also wasn't a huge commitment, since we would only teach two classes a week so that left lots of time to do other things. Our afternoons were usually filled with group dinners or excursions, where we got to explore the island and try some amazing Spanish and Canarian foods. The excursions and dinners were all optional, so any fellows who wanted to explore the island or city on their own could do so. Transportation was easy with so many city buses available and was fairly cheap. Our transportation to the hospital was also payed for and we were provided with most meals through breakfast at the residencia and lunch or dinner during excursions. The cost of food was pretty low, so buying your own meals was not expensive and most fellows chose to do so and try different foods.
Overall, the Atlantis Project offers an amazing opportunities for american students interested in healthcare to gain international experience while having a fun and enriching experience abroad. I would definitely recommend it to anybody looking for some international experience in healthcare.

What would you improve about this program?
Honestly the one thing I would change about the program would be the distance of the Residencia where we were staying from the city of Las Palmas, where the hospitals were and where we hung out. The buses were a bit inconvenient especially given the time of year. Since the regular school year was over the buses weren't running as often, so we always had to plan in advance and walk about 5 minutes to reach a bus stop. But to be honest this never kept us from enjoying ourselves, it was just an inconvenience.

Isabel- thanks so much for your vivid description of your time in the Canary Islands, we're thrilled to hear you had a great time. We'll take your suggestions into account to improve future programs. Thanks again!

The Daily life

Every morning we woke up early and grabbed the bus to the hospital. Once there we met up with our doctors, we shadowed them for the rest of the day till late afternoon. We were able to change specialties every week and got to see a multitude of surgeries. I personally got to shadow in Hematology, Thoracic surgery, Endocrinology, Ophthalmology and nephrology. The doctors were amazing! Most of them spoke some english but either way we were able to practice our language skills with them or with patients. They were also very patient and explained the procedures to us in detail. They were allowed us to scrub in on their surgeries which allowed us to see some amazing procedures. We were only allowed to watched for patient safety. The doctors even allowed us to shadow them when they were consulting patients which was very interesting to see how these two interacted. The residents were very friendly and helpful too.
At night we had time to explore the city, see the major cities on the islands and visit the major tourist areas. Some nights there were group dinners or activities which was a good opportunity to bond and swap stories about the surgeries or other exciting events we experienced that day.
During the weekends we had group activities planned which usually included hikes and visits to other cities and tourist activities.

What would you improve about this program?
Maybe more down time would have been nice on this trip. Smaller groups on this trip would have made for closer groups rather than many small groups of students.
Response from Atlantis (Pre-Health Summer)

Hi Danielle--thanks for your insight into daily life on your AP program, sounds like you really got to see a lot. Point taken on the group size, we usually do what makes the most sense logistically but can certainly look into this further. Take care, all the best!

Amazing experience I would do all over again.

I absolutely fell in love with this internship. I learned and got to see so much! I saw numerous surgeries each day, was immersed in the culture, experienced wonderful food, amazing warmth and hospitality within the Portuguese culture, and made a few wonderful friendships.
I loved that we were introduced to aspects of the Portuguese culture (parades, festas, etc.) as well as able to participate in beautiful nature hikes and leisure time at the beach. I also love that we had the opportunity to not only teach English, but also to learn Portuguese through the available classes. It was an awesome once in a life time experience I would be crazy to have passed up.

What would you improve about this program?
The cost was a little pricey, and wifi was poor in most areas of the dorms.
Response from Atlantis (Pre-Health Summer)

Hi Alexandria, thanks so much for sharing your experience and photos-- they're beautiful. Sounds like you had a very impactful experience. Regarding cost, most AP Fellow fundraise to help defray costs for their program and we've teamed up to bring Fellows even more online tools to make this happen. We'll look into the wifi issues, thanks for your suggestions!

Atlantis Project

This was a summer unlike any other! I met some of the best doctors and of course I made some great friends! I would recommend this internship to anyone. The only con is the cost of the internship. I was in the Azores for 1 month and the Canary Islands fof another month. I had a blast and I plan on going back very soon!

What would you improve about this program?
Cost of the program is very high. The tuition that I paid did not seem to go to great use.
Response from Atlantis (Pre-Health Summer)

Hi Parth-- we're so glad to hear you had a great experience overall and that you got to experience both the Spanish and Portuguese islands. We're sorry to hear how you felt about the costs. We've taken your feedback seriously and we share more information about how our program fees are used for our future program participants.

provides excellent healthcare exposure and perspective

The healthcare exposure was outstanding. Being able to view surgeries in the surgical theater is an experience that is hard to come by in the United States. You also get to observe a different health care system than that of the United States, and this itself is insightful.

The excursions were beautiful and very diverse in nature. They ranged from hiking to whale watching. You will not be bored from the activities.

What would you improve about this program?
The program needs some improvement with logistics and organization. Wifi and phone service was difficult to come by.
Response from Atlantis (Pre-Health Summer)

Hi Avinash, thanks for leaving a review of your program, we're happy to hear you enjoyed yourself on the excursions and learned a lot too-- those are the main goals of our programs! We also appreciate your suggestions for improvement regarding wifi and phone so we will work to improve those aspects of the program. Thanks again!

You will receive as much as you put in

This internship was a reminder that even though opportunities can come your way, it is up to you in terms of how much you learn and receive from these opportunities. A little timid in terms of asking and creating opportunities for myself, I was challenged during the shadowing portion to really be proactive and develop further opportunities myself, a crucial skill that is necessary as we enter the professional field.
Language Barrier:
Even though a language barrier existed, the warm atmosphere and the help of the staff and locals helped me fully receive the Tenerife culture in all aspects. With a weaker Spanish background, I was motivated to study and learn Spanish more because I wanted to embrace the culture quickly.
Shadowing:
Most of the days included visits to the hospital with the opportunity to shadow many different types of specialities that may be harder to shadow back in the United States. My shadowing experiences helped me realize the caliber of programs or experiences I will experience as I further my field in pre-medicine and medicine. With exposure and interaction with real patients, the level of professionalism and expectations are clearly higher than any previous program. I was able to realize and/or remember the reasons why I chose this field as I met the different doctors and patients.
Excursions:
Excursions were good and kept us busy. I would have liked to have at least one free day every two weeks or so to relax. (Everyday is scheduled) I loved the excursions but wished it also included a trip to Siam Park (Best Water park in Europe).

Overall, with the right people and experiences, I think this internship could really teach and effect a lot of students interested in this field. Not only are you able to meet fellow peers, you can experience a realistic view of the medical field.

What would you improve about this program?
The wifi was on and off at times, making it difficult. I know many students who were unsure about attending the program because the summer time was a crucial moment for medical school applications, and a reliable internet connection was needed to continue the application process. It was common to hear about their concerns due to the wifi. The staff worked quickly to find the best possible solution.
Also, because the internship is not cheap, many fellows discussed the desire to know how the cost was divided and allocated into the appropriate categories. While an excellent experience, more transparency into "where the money is exactly going" might have provided more of a sense of security for the fellows.
Response from Atlantis (Pre-Health Summer)

Hi Yena, thanks for providing such a detailed account of your experience and the different aspects of the program you enjoyed, it was very informative. It sounds like you were able to really push yourself out of your comfort zone and realized how much that will help you in your career. We've taken your suggestion about more financial transparency and we spend more time informing our participants of how program fees are used. We are also looking into ways to improve wifi on the islands which is a work in progress. Thanks again for your insight!
