Making Waves for a Cleaner Planet: My Beach Clean-Up Volunteering Experience

Volunteering in beach clean-up activities with Instituto Hemingway was one of the most rewarding parts of my stay in Spain. What started as a simple environmental activity quickly became a powerful lesson in teamwork, responsibility, and connection with nature.

From the very first day, I felt part of a motivated international group, all sharing the same goal: protecting the coastline and reducing plastic pollution. Equipped with gloves, bags, and lots of enthusiasm, we worked together to collect waste, separate recyclables, and restore the natural beauty of the beach. Seeing the sand transform from littered to clean in just a few hours was incredibly satisfying.

Beyond the physical impact, the experience raised my awareness about how everyday habits affect the environment. It was eye-opening to realize how much plastic and micro-waste ends up in the ocean, often coming from small, careless actions. The coordinators explained the importance of sustainability and responsible consumption, making the activity both practical and educational.

What I loved most was the sense of community. Volunteers came from different countries and backgrounds, yet we connected easily through shared purpose. Conversations flowed naturally while we worked, and laughter mixed with meaningful discussions about climate change, travel, and cultural experiences. It reminded me that volunteering is not only about helping — it’s also about building bridges between people.

The program was well organized, supportive, and flexible, allowing everyone to contribute at their own pace. Even simple tasks felt meaningful because we could immediately see the results of our efforts. Knowing that our work helped protect marine life and preserve beautiful landscapes gave me a deep sense of accomplishment.

This experience also helped me grow personally. I became more mindful of my environmental footprint and more motivated to adopt eco-friendly habits in daily life. It reinforced the idea that change starts locally, with small actions repeated consistently. Cleaning a beach may seem minor, but when many people work together, the impact becomes powerful.

Volunteering through Instituto Hemingway offered the perfect balance between cultural immersion, environmental action, and personal development. It allowed me to give back to the community while enjoying the outdoors and meeting inspiring people. I left each session feeling energized, grateful, and more connected to the place I was living in.

I would highly recommend this beach clean-up volunteering program to anyone seeking a meaningful experience abroad. It combines environmental awareness, teamwork, and cultural exchange in a truly memorable way. For me, it was not just about cleaning beaches — it was about caring for the planet, learning from others, and becoming part of something bigger.

What was your funniest moment?
The most fun moment of the day always came after a long morning of cleaning, when we turned the work into a little game. We competed to see who could collect the most trash, laughed as we slipped on wet sand, and sometimes even made impromptu sand sculptures out of discarded items before properly disposing of them. Those moments of laughter, playful challenges, and teamwork made the hard work feel light and unforgettable.
Pros
  • Immediate positive impact
  • International connection
  • Learning and awareness
Cons
  • Physically demanding Walking and picking up trash can be tiring
  • weather conditions
  • Limited results – Sometimes the amount of trash can feel overwhelming compared to the size of the problem.

Volunteering as a social media and marketing assistant in Bilbao

When I first arrived in Bilbao, I hardly had any knowledge of Spanish and was a tiny bit nervous, but everyone at the Instituto Hemingway was very kind and accommodating and made me feel welcome in an instant. It was no problem at all for the volunteer program that my Spanish skills were so low at the beginning, as I could do a lot of the work in English, and while my Spanish skills progressed over time, I was happy to see that I could do more and more of the volunteering work in Spanish. The work itself was very varied - it consisted for example in creating videos for social media, planning the social activities of the institute, designing panels and pictures for one of the classrooms and assisting in examinations. Moreover, I also had language classes in the insitute during the five weeks that I spent there, which were virtually always a lot of fun and helped me greatly to improve my Spanish skills, so that by the end of my time in Bilbao I could even have longer conversations in Spanish with my new friends. I'm very grateful for this unforgettable experience and I'm sure that I will return to Bilbao - a city which I have grown to love - with its vibrant culture, nice inhabitants and picturesque landscapes surrounding it.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
-Get yourself a Barik card at the start of the program - it allows you to travel around the whole area quite conveniently and cheaply - and use it as much as possible because there are so many nice and interesting things to see in and around Bilbao!
-Pay heed to the calendar of events when you plan your travels, as Bilbao also has great festivals that you don't want to miss out on.
-If you have any concerns or queries while you are in Bilbao, don't hesitate to ask José or any other staff member at the institute. In my experience, everyone there is always very helpful and will try to fulfil your wishes as much as possible.
-But most importantly: Just have fun and be open-minded and you'll have the most amazing time and make friends for life!
Pros
  • very nice staff and welcoming atmosphere
  • beautiful city and pretty surroundings with mountains, beaches and the sea
  • great public transport services in the whole area
Cons
  • very changeable weather
  • odd working hours - but you get used to them ; )

Working together, sharing stories, and exploring the city made the experience unforgettable and showed me the joy of connecting with both animals and people in a meaningful way. I also learned valuable skills in teamwork, responsibility, and empathy, which I will carry with me forever.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-racking moment was the first day at the animal shelter, facing many animals I had never cared for before. I was nervous about doing everything correctly and not stressing the animals. By asking questions, observing experienced volunteers, and taking things step by step, I gained confidence. Overcoming that initial fear made me more capable and showed me the importance of patience and learning from others.
