About Program

This two-week Therapy Abroad program in Bulgaria and Greece is designed for undergraduate and graduate students interested in occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, communication sciences and disorders, rehabilitation, special education, and related health professions. Students begin in Bulgaria, one of Europe’s oldest countries, where they learn alongside experienced OTs, SLPs, local professionals, and Therapy Abroad staff during the clinical and service-learning portion of the program. Through observation, hands-on activities, cultural exchange, and community-based learning, students gain practical insight into therapy, disability services, global healthcare, and interdisciplinary care. The program concludes in Santorini, Greece, where students explore local culture, food, history, coastal villages, and the ancient town of Akrotiri. This is an ideal summer study abroad experience for students seeking clinical exposure, cultural immersion, and career-focused learning.

Great Experience Overall

This trip was so much fun and truly was an eye opener to experiencing different cultures, especially in a therapeutic perspective. Emo, Kris, Chudo, and others behind the scenes were so great, and built such a strong connection to ensure our comfortability and safety as a group in a new country. The scenery and planned excursions were truly life changing. While being able to observe 3 different therapeutic settings with a range of age groups and disabilities was very beneficial and such great exposure, because our group was so big, it was hard to get everybody involved. I also feel as though the communication between daily planning with our group and the facilities could have been done a little bit more in advance to avoid the disorganization I felt was happening in the moment. Regardless, this trip was amazing and I would definitely recommend it to everyone!!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I had a potato dumpling in Germany during our layover, and I must say, it was not very good. Everything else was delicious though!
Pros
  • Built connections & new friendships
  • Exposure to unfamiliar situations
  • Traveled to new places I probably wouldn’t have gone to on my own

Therapy Abroad - Bulgaria & Greece 2026

This trip was truly life-changing. I saw an ad, took a chance, and am so grateful I did. The supervisors, guides, and locals welcomed us with such kindness that people I met only two weeks ago now feel like family. I loved the balance of education, cultural experiences, and fun activities. I made unforgettable memories, learned so much, and grew as a person. This experience has made me feel so much more confident now that I am applying to grad school! I would highly recommend this experience to anyone looking for an adventure that will leave a lasting impact.

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moments were with our local guides Emo and Kris from Bulgaria. They were truly our father figures of the group! As someone flying across the country without knowing anyone, they truly made me feel at home! The inside jokes with this group will forever make me laugh!!!
Pros
  • Balance between fun and education
  • Fostering and welcoming environment
  • Support by our supervisors
Cons
  • Clinical organization lacked

Therapy Abroad Bulgaria/ Greece OT

Coming into this trip, I was very nervous and did not know what I got myself into. Then, after the first day, I knew right away. I got myself into something great: new friendships, experiences, and memories that I will never forget. I have met people that I can’t wait to see again one day, a supervisor that gave me the encouragement I need to hear for applying to OT school, and the best staff to guide us where we needed to be. I cannot recommend this program enough, and I am so thankful that I saw that random link in my OT society group chat a year ago. Thank you for it all, Therapy Abroad.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Genuinely just DO IT! Take the leap. You will not regret it.
Pros
  • The people
  • The awesome itinerary for each day
  • The clinic locations
Cons
  • The hotel in Bulgaria
  • Emo not coming with us to Greece

Once in a lifetime experience!

My Therapy Abroad trip exceeded my expectations. I went into this trip open minded and very, very new to my SLP program. I learned not only so much about speech-language pathology, but so much about myself, why I chose my field and just the world. I learned how to be more patient, more optimistic and more open-minded. Our guides were so good and although at some pointsy surroundings made me a tiny bit nervous with just being in such an unfamiliar area, I always felt safe and relieved whenever I turned and saw my guides. I think this trip is worth every penny—and I fundraised!!! Definitely recommend that as well, if that is what’s holding you back.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
If I am being completely honest, a big part of why I chose this trip was because of Greece, I knew it was going to be beautiful. BUT, I was so shocked at how BEAUTIFUL Bulgaria was and all of the scenery we saw. You stay in the countryside, and it’s amazing. So peaceful and secluded, but safe as well. I was so shocked at the natural beauty and loved when we would pack up to go to the children’s center, because although the ride was a little lengthy, it was so pretty to look at.
Pros
  • Gaining knowledge for your future career
  • Meeting new people
  • Scenery
Cons
  • Food, if you are picky just be prepared! They do the best to accommodate to you, though.

An enriching and fun experience abroad!

This trip exceeded my expectations! As an OT student I was able to learn how to prepare for therapy sessions, perform assessments, identify sustainable practices, practice creativity with minimal resources, and so much more! As a young adult, I was able to gain new perspectives that traveling gives you and have fun while also feeling completely safe the whole trip. Even getting to know other students on the trip and making friends was beautiful. Lastly, I will forever remember our three guides that did the most for us. They cooked countless meals, drove the vans, translated at the clinic, and became our friends. They displayed the kindness of Bulgaria. I could not recommend this program enough.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Your supervisors are there for you, so come with questions and a curiosity about the world of therapy! They have great advice and wisdom to share.
Pros
  • Clinical experience in a new environment
  • Connections with students and therapists
  • Plenty of time to explore Bulgaria & Greece
Cons
  • I would have loved to bring more toys/resources for the clients

Great professional opportunity!

This trip was so much better than I could have ever imagine. I felt safe every step of the way, the communication from staff and mentors was timely and accurate, and every person made sure the trip was as smooth and fun as possible. The “guides” went above and beyond to explain things to us or make us more comfortable. I left the trip with friends and professional mentors that I still talk to!! I also recommend the trip for resume/skill building. I learned so much about the career and day-to-day of an SLP while on this trip. I was immersed in clinical work and exposed to such a breadth of information in a digestible way.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
In Bulgaria, they have a traditional cold soup that’s made from a liquidy yogurt base and has cucumbers. Very yummy but not like anything I’ve had before!
Pros
  • Communication
  • Safety
  • Comfort
Cons
  • No A/C in housing in Bulgaria

If you are able to go, go!

I love to travel and I love to volunteer, so when this opportunity came up I was so excited. I would be able to travel and volunteer as an SLP (I just graduated right before going and didn't need any clinical hours :)). This experience is something I will never forget. I could have easily stayed another month in Bulgaria. The country was beautiful, but the people were what made this. Our guides were some of the best people I have met in my life and the people that we got to work with will always have a place in my heart. If you have the opportunity to do this trip, do it. I just got back and I am already thinking of going back (hopefully as a supervisor)! I felt safe, supported, cared for, and appreciated the whole time. We had people in our group from all different levels of becoming/being an SLP from undergrad students, to current grad students, recently graduated SLP's, and our supervisors. This trip is for anyone. Greece was fantastic too, but Bulgaria has my heart.

What was your funniest moment?
I can't choose one. We had the best guides with us who were always making us laugh. It was such an incredible time.
Pros
  • Our amazing guides
  • The people of Bulgaria
  • Everything (honestly)

Truly the best and most rewarding experience!

I would recommend Therapy Abroad to anyone. While I didn’t really know what to expect when I signed up, I truly ended up having the most amazing time, I met lifelong friends, endured life changing experiences, saw awesome places, and expanded my knowledge. The resources and skills I learned from this trip, later helped me greatly when building my resume for Occupational Therapy school. I got accepted to my program at Mizzou a year early after attending therapy abroad. This trip helped me grow a lot professionally and as a person. The memories made will last a lifetime, the students I met were truly some of the coolest and funniest people and we all built such a special bond as well as with all our staff members and guides. I later even traveled to another state to visit friends I had met on this trip. Overall, Therapy Abroad is an amazing program that brings students from all over together to help them pursue professional goals in cool places!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I remember the most nerve-racking moment was just getting there in the first place, I had never been to another country before or traveled alone. I flew out of New York by myself to meet up with all these people in another country. I knew no one and I was so nervous but something had led me to want to do this trip. My advice to anyone is to just do it! Even if you’re scared and don’t know a soul, take that leap of faith because it ended up so worth it in the end!
