Improving my spoken Chinese

I started to learn Chinese in Germany without contact to anyone speaking the language. I could learn in small groups and by myself, but speaking with native speakers is a different story.

The program was really great to speak with the teacher, school staff and classmates. It improved my pronunciation was well as listening comprehension a lot - and also my confidence speaking with others. The teaching method is great and fun! It does not feel like sitting at school at all. The Safari addition was a great experience to go outside, explore local markets and discuss products and offers with vendors. I would recommend it for language students who already can speak and understand a bit.

I chose the homestay - which was different from what I expected but great! I lived with a few other students together in a different apartment in the same building. I just had dinner with the family and could practice my Chinese. The good thing about the setting is to have both - freedom to go out and discover the city or join friends for dinner as well as having the family connection to learn about the family live without being a third wheel.

I would recommend the school and program for everyone who wants to take his language learning to the next level. I definitively would do it again!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
make sure you know what you want out of the program - there are so many choices. The communication with the school staff before the booking was good to make the best choice for my travel plans and language level.

If I could again - I would take different language test levels to really find out my level. I think I could have chosen a higher level. But it was great to get the repetition and improve the pronunciation on already known vocabulary and grammar.
Pros
  • Great teacher made learning fun and easy at my pace in one on one classes
  • Active community with side program and joined lunches - no one needs to eat alone
  • I could stick to write simplified but could also learn how to read traditional characters
Cons
  • one on one classes makes it more difficult to get to know other students

LTL in Beihai

I thouroughly enjoyed my month year in Beihai with LTL. This was my second time attending a Chinese language program like this, and I think the homestay makes the experience more uniqe. Not only was I able to learn in the classroom, but I was also able to learn about Chinese culture and experience what it was like living with a Chinese family. My homestay treated me extremely well and gave me lots of great food. My teacher (林老师) was energetic and helped me improve very quickly. Savannah also helped me immensely before and during my stay here. Beihai is a small town and isn't quite as developed as China's tier 1 cities, but the people here are very friendly and excited to meet foreigners.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Download HelloTalk. It was a little difficult at first to make friends, but many people in Beihai use this app and are eager to meet in person for language exchange.
Pros
  • Immersive homestay environment taught me about Chinese culture
  • Energetic teacher, helped me improve very quickly
  • Great administrative staff helped me when any problems arose
Cons
  • Beihai isn't quite as exciting as the Tier 1 cities. However, I think the people are generally friendlier and eager to welcome foreigners.

LTL Shanghai

I just finished my 4 weeks of school at LTL and I am extremely happy with my time there. The teachers are very nice and happy to answer all your questions, from language to culture or good restaurants and leisure activities. (Shout-out to my teachers: the most fashionable teacher Winnie and confusian-grandmaster Ray for all the lessons and talks we had).

The teaching style is very informative. Although the pace can feel quite fast at times, there’s a good balance between speaking, grammar, and vocabulary practice. I only had group classes, usually with 2 to 4 people. From what I experienced, if you combine both 1-on-1 and group classes the workload might become a bit too much. With 6 hours of lessons per day, it can be difficult to also review properly, focus on characters, and still make time to explore the city. Maybe only chose both classes if you have a short time to learn (1 to 2 weeks) or are just a very avid student.
That said, the balance in the group classes kept the lessons engaging rather than overwhelming, and by the end I learned more than I initially expected.

The management / administration staff are very helpful (Thank you for all the help Alex). You can go to them with any complaint or concern, whether it’s about changing classes, apartments or dates and they will very likely provide a satisfactory solution. I haven’t heard of any student who had an issue that wasn’t resolved in a timely manner.

The student community at school are a pretty tight group. Almost everyone is very sociable and welcoming. Most people are open to making new friends and finding things to do after class. Every week new students arrive from all over the world, so there’s no need to worry about fitting in.

I personally stayed in a shared apartment, in which 2 other LTL students also stayed. Nice rooms with good AC and had no problems sharing the bathroom. The Host familiy nice, but didnt see them often. Location was a bit far (50 minutes by metro) it was a nice neighbourhood where I otherwise would never have come. Honestly didn’t mind the commute.

If I had to choose a language school again, I would without a doubt choose LTL again.

Flexible and fun school!

I would recommend LTL to anyone who wants a more friendly and supportive learning environment. The admin, Riona, Alin, and Greta are so friendly and flexible. They do a great job to make everyone feel included and I love the group lunches. My teachers Helen and Wolfgang have also helped me understand cultural context which can be difficult to lean without expert help! There are even opportunities for trips on the weekend. My favorite was playing laser tag. The classes move quick but if you need extra support it is also available! Thank you everyone!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
One of the teachers organized a blind chip tasting game. We probably tried over 10 different flavors of chips. It was quite fun and helped me learn new Chinese words.
Pros
  • Flexibility
  • Welcoming
  • Lunches
Cons
  • Little more expensive

Great tutors lovely staff

The staff are one of the friendliest I’ve ever came across and they’re all super helpful and nice - especially when I needed support in some areas. The tutors are also understanding and all great people too.

My two tutors I’ve had have shown a genuine care for me in both my Chinese learning and growth and also for my personal self.

You receive tailored lessons which can be flexible for how you want to learn which I believe was very nice for me provided my current Mandarin level and also goals for the fuyure

Very flexible school, very supportive staff

After having been at LTL Taipei before in spring, I returned a second time for 4 weeks in autumn.

As my initial group class seemed to be not advanced enough for me, I brought it up to the director of studies, Alin, after a few days. She was very helpful and arranged for me to transfer to a more advanced class which was more suitable for me.

The school manager Riona was very supportive and gave me advice on all sorts of things I asked her about life in Taipei, whether it was where to find some services or cultural questions.

A lot of activities were organized during my stay. These included Mahjong sessions as well as playing laser tag. I personally enjoyed the brush painting and calligraphy activities a lot.

Most of my classes were instructed by teacher Anqi / Angela, who answered all sorts of Chinese-related questions I asked in between even if they were not related to the current lesson. l learned a lot (including very specific expressions that you won't find in the text book) and at the same time it was always fun.

I also want to stress that other teachers from the school who gave different classes from mine always gave me opportunity to practice speaking Chinese with them in between classes and activities.

I would recommend LTL Taipei to anyone who needs a flexible program, wants to try different activities, and enjoys a supportive & positive environment.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
If you end up with a class that is not suitable for you, discuss it with the director of studies, Alin. If you book 1-on-1 classes, think about what exactly you want to learn / cover -- the teachers will do it with you.

40 días

Bueno...el viaje fue largo. Vine sabiendo nada de chino. Absolutamente nada.

Well... the trip was long. I arrived knowing absolutely no Chinese. Nothing at all. After finishing, I feel I can communicate in a basic way and understand simple questions. Communicating is obviously a challenge I still haven't overcome, and getting around Chengdu wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. Thanks to my teacher, the friends I made during my stay, and the support I received from my homestay. It has been a very rewarding experience. But, it's so far away. I chose Chengdu because of the price; I didn't even know it was there.

A Month That Greatly Influenced My Life

I spent four weeks at LTL Beijing in the group classes. Since I’m considering studying Chinese in China for a year next year, I wanted to experience daily life in China and what it’s like to study in a Chinese language classroom. In the end, I gained far more than I expected.

First of all, our teacher Tara was truly outstanding. She has the ability to explain grammar and vocabulary perfectly in English. She was also someone I could really rely on — she even helped me buy a smartphone in China. I really admire Tara’s intelligence, as well as her natural and friendly personality.

My classmates were also amazing. All of them were far more capable than I was, and I was inspired not only by their attitude toward learning but also by their perspectives on life. LTL Beijing may be a bit expensive, but it attracts people who are absolutely worth the investment. It even made me feel like coming back to LTL next year instead of attending a Chinese university!

Thank you so much for the four wonderful weeks.
