Learning Mandarin

Learning Chinese has always been a challenge for me, especially because I have a busy work schedule and often struggled to stay consistent. I was looking for a school with a structured learning method that could help me make steady progress while keeping the classes engaging.

Choosing Silk Mandarin was definitely the right decision. The school’s teaching methodology is very well organized, making it easier to build a strong foundation and continuously improve. I also really appreciate the frequent activities and events organized by the school, which create opportunities to practice Chinese in real-life situations and make the learning experience much more enjoyable.

The biggest difference, however, has been my teacher, Catherine. She has an incredible ability to make every class feel light, interactive, and enjoyable. She creates a welcoming and encouraging environment where I feel comfortable speaking, asking questions, and making mistakes, which is essential when learning a new language. Her patience, enthusiasm, and positive attitude make every lesson something I genuinely look forward to.

Overall, my experience at Silk Mandarin has been excellent. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a professional, well-structured Chinese language school with dedicated teachers who truly care about their students’ progress.

Supportive teachers, great materials, and flexible classes — both in Suzhou and online!

i can’t say enough good things about Silk Mandarin. The teachers are incredibly helpful, always taking the time to make sure you truly understand the material. They’re also so encouraging — even when I made mistakes, I felt supported and motivated to keep going.

The range of materials and resources provided is impressive, and everything is well-organized for effective learning. I especially loved the physical classes in Suzhou — the in-person experience was engaging and immersive. At the same time, the virtual classes are just as enjoyable and interactive, which makes balancing a busy schedule much easier.

Whether you’re learning in person or online, Silk Mandarin creates a positive, productive environment. I’m so glad I found this school!

Great school

This school is in a lovely location in Shanghai and has great teachers and support staff. I felt very welcomed from the moment I arrived and they offer a free trial class to really make sure this is the school you want to attend. Thank you to Teacher Catherine for everything I have learnt so far! I hope to be able to continue with the same teacher. I live in Shanghai and having weekly classes at Silk Mandarin has made me a lot more confident and prepared for life in China. I learn the most when we are doing speaking practice and I can imitate the tones and pronunciation of Teacher Catherine.

Great experience

I had a great experience with Silk Mandarin in Shanghai during two weeks in March of year 2026. In this two weeks of classes I was able to cover a huge amount of material of HSK3. Their slow Chinese system is very good. The teacher was first class and the staff very responsive and efficient. Highly recommendable for intermediate students looking to improve their skills with on hand learning while enjoying this wonderful city. Not many people speak Chinese so you practice on the street every time you go out.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Take a lesson each day instead of packing many in a day.
Pros
  • Good teachers
  • Helpful staff
  • Great location

Silk Mandarin - Suzhou

Silk Mandarin is located in a beautiful building in the center of SIP Suzhou, it is close to many shops and the metro station, so it is exceptionally easy to access. I joined Silk Mandarin to complete my HSK 4 and also review my HSK 3 - I have discovered that my grammar is a little rusty, my teachers were only too happy to work with me at my pace, using their 'slow motion technique' and always gave me the most encouragement to do well. They did not pressure me if once or twice I forgot to do my homework, instead we worked on it in class.

When I got sick, they suspended my course so that I could get better and when eventually, I had to leave China, they gave me some time to settle back home before our online classes started.

I honestly think that Silk Mandarin are the best choice for anyone wishing to learn or review to improve their Chinese as the system they have set up is the best I have experienced. Not only that, the have this amazing 'blended learning' class system where you can review or revise the up and coming class online, Silk Mandarin have their own HSK videos online for you to review and learn from. Absolutely AMAZING!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I must confess, if I could, I would work harder on reviewing the classes before they happen and also do the tests that Silk Mandarin prepare after each class. I think I was a bit slack not doing this and I regret it as the tests are there to help us learn!
Pros
  • face to face classes
  • warm and embracing environment
  • Happy teachers
Cons
  • I had to leave China
  • I miss the face to face classes, but Sisi was just as good online as face to face
  • I miss china

The Best Mandarin School in Shanghai!

I have tried different Mandarin schools in Shanghai, and Silk Mandarin is by far the best one. Alina first helped me find the plan that best suited my needs and paired me up with an amazing teacher named Jane (Jane laoshi)! Laoshi Jane helped by going over some difficult concepts and didn’t try to rush me through the chapters, like some of the other schools do. Silk’s on-line platform, ClassIn, is easy to navigate and has several learning tools such as worksheets, videos, flash cards and quizzes. I highly recommend Silk to anyone, whether they like in China or are just here for a short time.

What was your funniest moment?
Putting my friend through the car wash without a car!
Pros
  • Big
  • Fun
  • Affordable
Cons
  • Commuter school

a wonderful and enriching summer experience

Silk Mandarin carefully assessed each of us, and tailored the program to our individual needs. We made a lot of progress on our language goals, and the activities provided many opportunities to use new learning while exploring the city.

Special mention to the staff who were all incredibly helpful. They worked hard to give us a memorable summer, and they succeeded!

Honestly everything was beyond our expectations and I would recommend this school to families and students alike. We will be back.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I almost lost a watch with sentimental value by leaving it at an activity location, and staff Amy went above and beyond to contact the management, get the location open, and help me look for it. We ultimately found the watch! This was only one of the many times she made the trip better for everyone, not just me.

Amazing summer camp experience

It was so fun to participate in Silk Mandarin’s Chinese Summer Camp. All the teachers and staff, were so patient and welcoming, and everyone else at the camp was also so friendly, which made it such an enjoyable learning experience. The classes mainly focused on practising speaking in Chinese, which can be very useful in everyday situations. I think these sessions have greatly improved my vocabulary and given me more confidence to speak Chinese. They would also prepare delicious food for us everyday after class, along with engaging activities to allow us to explore Shanghai and learn more about the Chinese culture. Each day was well-planned, allowing us to visit Shanghai’s most well-known sites, including the Pearl Tower. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and I really hope to visit again. Thank you Silk Mandarin! :)
