Amazing Athens Adventure

I had such a great experience on this trip. Everywhere I went was historic and beautiful. The campus was amazing and the teachers were so nice. We got to go on field trips to the locals museums even though I was only there for a three-week course. I also got to join a school trip for my first time SCUBA diving! With my ISA group, we got to see many historic places such as the Acropolis, the National Archeological Museum, Anafiotica, the Acropolis Museum, Aegina, Cape Sunion, Lycabettus Hill, and more! In my free time, I got togo to Crete and saw the REAL labyrinth (the Palace of Knossos), the Sanctuary of Apollo, the Omphalos (what the Greeks believed was the center of the world), the Delphi Archaeological Museum, and the Sanctuary of Athena!

Wonderfully invigorating

This trip was everything. I was pushed outside of my comfort zone constantly while knowing that I was supported and safe. Our directors were readily available and truly wanted to make the experience the best possible for each one of us. Any problems were handled swiftly, calmly, and remarkably. They worked hard to plan fun trips for the group to bond, adventure, and learn. Classes were intellectually challenging yet rewarding and a great opportunity to make Greek friends. (Some were quite boring like any class can be, and still a good opportunity to make friends!) In terms of living situations, dorming with seven other people was challenging and thankfully my roommates worked hard to create a fulfilling dynamic. We bonded over our fears, goals, and desire for adventure. I always felt safe and or had resources to get safe quickly allowing me to explore the neighborhood and Athens. Every day was a chance to explore my new environment and in turn, myself. I am so thankful and will remember my time in Greece forever :) Highly highly recommend.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would go on more solo trips within Greece. Looking back, I flew to other countries and utilized public transport a little bit in Athens but I did not venture much into my home away from home. Given the opportunity to live in Athens again, I would push myself to explore closer destinations and utilize public transportation much more. Seeing nearby cities and natural phenomena. Specifically, I never saw Meteora and I really wish I had. I say solo trips because I had many ideas planned with others but they never came to fruition, so I would change this by challenging myself to do solo trips. The few solo adventures I did were my most meaningful, impactful moments.
Pros
  • Public Transportation
  • Planned activities by directors
  • Hospitality of Athens
Cons
  • Athens is not a very green city which was hard for me, a nature lover
  • Many room mates, hard to get alone time if needed
  • School clubs were a little overwhelming to join and I consider myself extroverted

Spring Semester 2023

I had have the best experience studying abroad in Greece. For me, this was the first time outside of the United States so, I was a bit nervous but I was received with so much compassion and kindness abroad that I can now say that I have found a second home! Not only were the staff at ISA so helpful and supportive but, the community from the neighborhood and college were so inviting and welcoming! The food, the people and the excursions, I definitely will be back in Athens in due time! I recommend this program to future college students, take that leap, you wont regret it!

Beautiful Memories

My time abroad In Greece was so much fun. I have made friends for life; I don't know how I would live without these people. The on-site staff is super friendly, and they are very helpful. It was a fantastic time, I was there during the fall, and I think this is the perfect time to be. We had about a month and a half of fantastic weather where we spent most of our free time on the beach, which are very quickly accessible. Then we had lovely fall weather and even got some snow towards the end.

I never felt unsafe in the neighborhood where the dorms are super safe. It was also a pleasant walk from the school, so you got to explore the neighborhood a little, don't the way to the school. The school itself is very lovely; the teachers are all friendly and very helpful.

IMPORTANT, as an American, attendance was not something super important in college classes, but here is it. You need to show up, and if you're sick, you need a doctor's note to get your absences excused.

Pros
  • Beautiful architecture
  • Amazing/cheap food
  • Beautiful scenery
Cons
  • City
  • Crazy drivers
  • About the same prices as US $

So glad I did it

I signed up for the program not expecting much, other than being at a place I've never been before, and I got back more than I could have ever asked for. ISA program have created a wonderful community, where through that, I was able to foster meaningful friendships that I will forever hold close to my heart. I met some of the most open-minded individuals . Also, the locals were extremely friendly towards study-abroad students, and were willing to help out since I didn't speak Greek. I took classes with other international students and Greek students. The classes were taught in English, and students communicate with each other in English. ISA was very helpful in helping me pick my courses. On the weekends, we would go on organized excursion trips to different sightseeing spots in Athens, and the surrounding areas, as well as attending cultural classes like dancing and cooking.
Overall, it was a great experience and I'm so glad I did it.

Pros
  • meeting new people
  • exploring one of the most ancient cities
  • food was delicious
Cons
  • public transport was often delayed
  • some store do not accept Discover credit card

Living Among the Gods and Goddesses

My semester in Athens, Greece was the best time of my life. It is a beautiful country that has everything you could imagine, from the snow covered mountains, to the sandy beaches, to the bustling city, and ancient ruins around every corner. My favorite thing to learn about in history class was always the Greek gods and goddesses, so visiting their ancient temples was like an out of world experience for me. My ISA advisors were some of the kindest people I know and made a real effort to expose the students to their culture. The food was incredible and I could probably eat gyros for the rest of my life. My classes was a great mix of American and Greek students, where we could often debate about our ways of life. The thing I will value the most is the lifelong friendships that I have made. I still talk to my friends often and meeting them gives me a new excuse to travel more often to see them.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
A huge part of Athens is its ancient history and a large part of the ISA/ACG cultural activities is visiting the ancient ruins of the gods and goddesses. Therefore, I would recommend reading up on some of the gods and goddesses as well as some ancient mythology before leaving. Although I remembered some of the stories growing up, I think it would have been even more meaningful to visit these beautiful sites if I had reviewed their stories ahead of the semester.
