About Program

If you find yourself wondering why it’s so easy to feel at home in Amsterdam, chalk it up to “gezellig.” Roughly translated, that’s Dutch for cozy or home-like – a sensibility commonly associated with this city. Compact and easy to navigate by bike or on foot, Amsterdam houses more than 6,000 buildings from the 16th century forward that are protected for historic importance. It’s loaded with charm and treasures, from the gabled houses that stand shoulder to shoulder along the canals, to glorious masterpieces by Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Matisse, and more.

The center is located conveniently across the street from the University of Amsterdam and is embedded in a thriving, student-friendly neighborhood with cafes and restaurants and picturesque canals.

Ideal study abroad program!

I had a great time studying abroad in Amsterdam with CIEE. The staff was extremely friendly, supportive and helpful getting all the students settled in Amsterdam at the beginning of the semester. Throughout the semester, they planned lots of fun outings for us in Amsterdam and other cities in the Netherlands. They were always very responsive via email or GroupMe about various academic, social, and cultural questions that students may have. Overall, the supportiveness of the staff made this program run smoothly and it was very appreciated.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?

Amsterdam Abroad

My experience studying abroad in Amsterdam was amazing. This is one of the most beautiful cities. The architecture is so unique and has so much history. Amsterdam has something for everyone. There are many museums, green spaces, yummy food, and good music. You will never run out of things to do. The rest of The Netherlands is also great and very easily accessible through their intercity trains. Schipol airport is also very well connected so you can easily get around and travel to other countries. I also felt very safe in Amsterdam and was comfortable walking around everywhere by myself.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Amsterdam has many different policies when it comes to health and safety, compared to the US. With one of my classes we where able to visit a drug consumption room, a place where addicts can go and consume safely. We where also able to visit the PIC and speak with a sex worker which was very eye opening.
Pros
  • Great public transport
  • Beautiful architecture
  • very safe
Cons
  • weather
  • price of some food
  • housing distance from center of city

Amsterdam Summer 2023

Amsterdam was the perfect place to study abroad for the summer! CIEE handled all aspects of our stay wonderfully. My housing option was conveniently central and close to where our classes were. We were offered plenty of support, and despite never having to use it, I was aware of where to go if needed. The city was extremely safe and walkable, which made it easy to explore with friends regardless of the time of day. Lastly, the academics that were offered boasted a great range of topics and class sizes, and instructors were passionate about their chosen class topics.

Pros
  • Walkable City
  • English speaker friendly
  • Friendly people
Cons
  • Temperamental weather
  • Student housing options were far away from each other

Summer Business and Communications Amsterdam

A safe and reliable program with good housing and a couple of fun excursions that are planned, but aside from class mostly free time. A good opportunity to live abroad and explore independently while getting credits. They are somewhat disorganized but ultimately everything gets sorted. This is a great option if you only want to spend 4 weeks abroad and meet people. It is mostly students who are 19, 20, and 21 so expect that age range. Anyone can sign up for this program when approved so you meet people from all over.

Pros
  • Safe and Simple Housing
  • Easy to meet other students
  • Good course
Cons
  • Bad administrative communication in the beginning stages
  • Lack of academic organization

Studying Abroad in Amsterdam with CIEE

Being able to explore Amsterdam and the cities around has been the best part of this experience. Transportation has been really easy to use. Administration from CIEE is super helpful in giving you tips on where to go and how to get there throughout the city and in other countries. My professor had a lot of great experiences in the workforce that he could share in class that related to the topic taught. Being abroad has given my time to learn about myself and to do things I wouldn't normally. Learning about the culture has been really cool to gain a new perspective and makes you adapt. A really nice part is that almost everyone speaks English in Amsterdam.

Pros
  • speaks english everywhere
  • bike or walk everywhere
  • so many food options
Cons
  • public transportation can cost a lot
  • weather app is not always accurate

Amsterdam Business and Communications Summer Program

This study abroad experience was one of my best college decisions. CIEE was the first program I found that catered to all my desires. Within my summer Business and Communications Program, I took classes in my field of study and counted towards credit back at my home university. Additionally, the program allowed me to take weekend trips to other surrounding countries, truly making the most of my study abroad experience. Not to mention, the opportunity of both need and merit-based aid in a program that was already affordable was appealing. The program also was not exclusively connected with any one college or university, meaning that students were coming from a variety of different places, backgrounds, and schools. I knew this would make building friendships much easier because we were all in the same boat of being in a new country virtually alone.

Pros
  • beautiful city
  • lots to do - day and night life
  • everyone speaks english
Cons
  • public transport can be expensive

CIEE - Amsterdam

Studying in Amsterdam with CIEE was a great experience. CIEE was incredibly responsive and supportive throughout the entire process, while still having all the freedom and space to explore. It was nice to be able to take both CIEE classes and classes with University of Amsterdam because they were very different both academically and socially. I was able to invest in adventures and not just academics. Overall, I highly recommend this program because it gave me more confidence in myself and my independence while maintaining a strong support system.

Pros
  • Biking as transportation
  • Access to experiences
  • The city
Cons
  • Housing can vary in location
  • More expensive than other places in Europe
  • Weather

CIEE January Term in Amsterdam

I studied abroad with CIEE in Amsterdam in the January 2023 term. I spent three weeks total in Amsterdam and took one 3-credit course - Dutch Public Health. This was my first time going abroad alone, and CIEE did a great job of making everyone feel safe and at home regardless of study abroad experience. Before the trip, we were provided with a plethora of detailed information about every aspect of our study abroad experience including housing, meals, packing, and an overview of the Dutch culture. I never felt unprepared once or unsure before leaving! They also provided an itinerary for our first few days in Amsterdam so we knew what to expect from the moment we got off the plane. We also had the chance to virtually meet the other students participating in the program via Groupme and Canvas.

I am from Texas, so the moment I got out of the airport, Amsterdam felt like a different world, but I was excited to be immersed in a new city and culture for the coming weeks. On the educational side, we were enrolled in class for about two full weeks with 4-hour class times a day with an hour lunch break in the middle. Depending on your desired course choice, the class format may be different, but for Public Health, it was lecture-based with one day of excursions. The CIEE program scheduled time for 3 group excursions in various parts of the Netherlands including Leiden, Rotterdam, and the Red Light District of Amsterdam. Each excursion showcased a different side of the Netherlands and made our time there more worthwhile.

We were housed in a popular student housing dormitory/hotel that many international students live at. It was very modern and fun, and included a café, free laundry, a gym, and plenty of social and work spaces. Each student had their own room and private bathroom, which were both of great quality and cleanliness. The location was very close to the city center, had a grocery store across the street, and was near plenty of restaurants.

Overall, it was a great experience and would recommend it to any study abroad experience!

Pros
  • Beautiful city with amazing architecture!
  • The city is so clean and very environmentally friendly!
  • Very diverse! It is better for English-speaking foreigners because everyone knows English as well as Dutch
Cons
  • During the winter season it is very cold, windy, and rainy
  • The days are short in the winter, so there's only about 8 hours of sunshine (if it's not overcast)
  • It's a relatively small city, so don't pack in all the tourist experiences all at once unless you're there for a short time
