About Program

This study abroad program is coordinated by the Northern Illinois University Study Abroad Office (SAO) and the University Honors Program, in cooperation with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Departments of Political Science and Sociology. It is conducted in partnership with the De Haagse Hogeschool (The Hague University of Applied Sciences) in the Netherlands.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW: From the end of the nineteenth century to the present, genocides have been some of the most notorious events in world history. These atrocities disturb virtually all states and peoples and, notably, have repercussions that transcend the immediate violations of life and which play out through the decades and centuries that follow.

NIU Faculty Led Study Abroad

If you are even slightly interested in Peace Studies, Genocide Studies, or International Affairs then this program is for you. Daily, our activities ranged from visiting Criminal Courts and Tribunals to visiting Art Galleries and going on tours of Amsterdam or The Hague. The coursework is somewhat rigorous, but will leave you with a vast knowledge of International Justice.

What would you improve about this program?
The work load was rather heavy, but I believe this is being remedied (or at least minimized) for the coming year's program.
