About Program

This fall or spring program for intermediate or advanced students offers intensive Spanish language, humanities, and social sciences at the Curso de Lengua y Cultura Españolas para Extranjeros (ELE) at the University of Oviedo. Morning language courses are attended by US and other international students, and the in-class learning is complemented by a series of experiential activities such as excursions, including overnight and day trips, guided local visits and other group activities. Students also have the opportunity to participate in optional community service placements with local schools and NGOs. A cross-cultural communications course, language partners, and home stays help to further engage students in the community and enhance linguistic and cultural immersion. Located in the northwest region of Spain called Asturias, Oviedo offers easy access to shopping, restaurants, the Camino de Santiago, beaches and hiking in the lushly forested mountains surrounding this beautiful area.

Six months in beautiful Oviedo

Oviedo is a charming little city nestled in the green mountains of Northern Spain. About 4 hours from Madrid, and very close to the Cantabric sea (and beautiful beaches!) it is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the Spanish language and culture. Being in a less-traveled area, most people only speak Spanish, which I found very helpful when trying to learn the language. The city is big enough that you will never be bored, but small enough to feel right at home. The GEO site staff, Carmen and Silvia, were both wonderful as were most of the professors at the Universidad de Oviedo in the Casa de las Lenguas. I was able to travel all over, meet and study with people from all over the world, and live like a local with my wonderful host family! I wish I could go back and enjoy Oviedo all over again.

What would you improve about this program?
While the GEO staff on site were awesome, the staff in the home office were less so. It was difficult to communicate with them when you needed something, and from the get-go of the application profess they gave misinformation. Don't let this stop you from applying, but reach out to Carmen and Silvia if possible for the best information.

Carmen Arrúe was born in Cuba and raised in the USA where she earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in Anthropology. She has been director of the Oviedo program for over 20 years and been a long time resident in Asturias, the land where her ancestors are from. There she says she has " found her place in the world."

What is your favorite travel memory?

Every trip I have taken has left a mark. I guess it is because the places are well chosen for some quality that strikes my fancy - be it natural beauty, cultural richness or human interest. Wherever I go, I prefer to linger in depth versus skimming over the surface.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

I consider myself very lucky to do what I do for GEO. My work has been most rewarding in offering me constant opportunities to cross cultures and help others to do so as well.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

There are many, the best have to do with undergoing a significant change or transformation (personal, emotional, mental) as a result of their study abroad experience. Sometimes this has been most dramatic, an absolute change in career or life direction which comes accompanied by the courage to do so.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

conquering a hike

I would go on just about any of the programs we offer because many of them take place in sites that are not the typical places where students study abroad, where I think it is easier for them to immerse in the language and the culture.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

As an anthropologist I have always been very proud that we were among the first study abroad organizations to value and put an emphasis on intercultural training for the students who participate on our our programs. Local, experienced, permanent staff members offer support and mentorship to our students and are an important strength of our programs.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

As always, the human factor is what in the end brings success to any company. Without the dedication, commitment, energy and hard work of people you can't get very far.
