About Program

What better way to gain hands-on experience with diverse cases, fields, and lawyers than in the fast-paced and beautiful cities of Madrid, Barcelona or Valencia? At Lex, pre-law students rotate to a new law firm each day, where they can expect to gain a deeper understanding of day-to-day life in the legal field. This is done by completing case studies and meeting with firms and attorneys throughout the host cities. In addition, they develop a deep appreciation for the rich cultures our site locations have to offer.

Perfect Blend of Insight and Fun

This pre-law trip was amazing because it struck the perfect balance between learning and exploring the city of Valencia. I had so much fun and learned a lot when meeting legal professionals, gaining insight into the field, and diving deeper into what a legal career looks like. Plus, we got to see so many of the city’s best sights and enjoy its culture. The program managers were great and very helpful. The combination of hands-on learning and free time made it both educational and enjoyable—an unforgettable experience that left me even more excited about pursuing law.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Spain is really hot during the summer! Also pack light - you can always shop when you get there :)

Unique Legal Experience Abroad

The Lex Fellowship Program was a unique legal experience that gave me a great life perspective in terms of my career choice as well as my dreams of traveling the world. The legal experience was such an amazing experience because we were exposed to a variety of areas of law by visiting law firms, interacting and connecting with lawyers, as well as working on cases and breaking them down. I was able to focus on specific areas of corporate law, specifically in Mergers and Acquisitions, that I would like to explore as a future career. The cultural experience was amazing. My passion for soccer grew after witnessing the Spanish National Team winning the Euro Cup in Germany. It will forever be a moment I cherish as a great life experience to have been able to take part in Europe's passion for the Beautiful Game.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. In Europe, it is their passion. It is also my passion. I was able to witness the Spain National Team win the Euro Cup this summer during my time in Madrid. I was amazed at the crowds of people at the park joining together to root for their national team and eventually celebrate together with strangers after winning the game against England. I was surprised to see such a big gathering in the public park to watch the game.
Pros
  • Soccer passion
  • Tasty Food
Cons
  • It was a bit inconvenient to have to travel by subway the whole time

My once in a lifetime experience in Madrid, Spain

Spending time in Madrid Spain has been one of the most amazing adventures I’ve had thus far that. Not only was I allowed to emerge in a beautiful culture and try exquisite food, but I was able to get the inside scoop on a field that I plan to pursue. The Lex fellowship allows you to step out of your comfort zone and step into a zone of adventure and knowledge retention. This program allows you to develop and grow your skills as you experience the everyday life of Spain. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. THANK YOU LEX!!!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
The most unfamiliar thing I ate was squid ink. At first I didn’t like the texture but when I tried it with a mayo like sauce it was actually pretty good.
Pros
  • Site seeing
  • Emerging in a new culture
  • Endless adventure
Cons
  • Culture shock
  • Time zone adjusting
  • Home sickness

Great

It was a very good time, I really appreciated the opportunity to be able to be apart of the Lex Fellowship. It was so cool to be able to study abroad, and have a emphasis on what I want to study one day. I am a pre-law student, so the trainings and meetings with the attorneys really helped me! I was able to learn more about the culture of Spain and also learn the law in Europe. It inspired me to one day go and work or live there. I was very impressed by our teacher in specific to law, Nephi Dummar

What was your funniest moment?
We all had a lot of inside jokes and would share them at dinner a lot!!
Pros
  • Not worry about payment, Lex took care of housing and food once we paid
  • Study abroad
  • Live in europe for some weeks
Cons
  • Not the most organized
  • Adjusting to language
  • Sometimes a little repetitive

Madrid, Spain 2 Week Winter Program

My takeaways are that it was very effective in confirming my interest in going to law school, it definitely gave me more confidence. In my opinion the goal of this program is not to only learn law but to be exposed to it and discover whether law is for you or not.

The legal training sessions we received exposed us to 1L material, admissions and LSAT preps. My advisor was extremely knowledgeable, helpful and relatable. Legal excursions consisted of visiting different law firms, in which you are given a case study of a case they handled or put together, and as a group or individually take a stab at it, which I thought was very helpful in pushing us to think beyond what we may already know. It pushed us outside the box.

The city manager Melisa was amazing, fun, caring and very knowledgeable. She made sure we always had everything we needed and looked out for us. She planned many cultural excursions and group lunches/dinners that were amazing.

Overall, I definitely felt like I got my moneys worth. Applying to law school is a long and stressful process, and many of us question ourselves or even give up along the way but by doing the 2 week program I left with the confidence to see it through, and gained many positive experiences as well as connections. 100% recommended to anyone looking to apply.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
There were a lot of ham legs hanging on every street, it was honestly so cool and surprising to see.
Pros
  • Gain legal experience
  • Gain new connections
  • Gain inside knowledge about law school
Cons
  • Could be pricey
  • Language barrier
  • You might get homesick

Spain Lex Fellowship

It was a great experience to travel to a whole new country. Meet new people and their law. Also networking was a great way for me to have connections. I loved the food and the firm visits we had. Plus enjoying it with new people which we became friends in a small amount of time. I would recommend it to others and I would probably do the lex fellowship again. Spain was most of the beautiful countries I have visited so far. It helped build up my resume as well. And a good way for me to start applying for law school again.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
It was nerve racking to travel alone and live plus be with new people in a whole different country. But it was a great experience to learn something new at a new place.
Pros
  • Network with lawyers
  • Try new food
  • Meet a whole new place
Cons
  • Needed to do more firm visits
  • Mock trials

Madrid, Spain Summer 2023

I was deeply inspired to join the Lex Fellowship program because it presents a unique opportunity to bridge my academic background and interest in law with practical, real-world experiences in a new and immersive environment. I realized on this program that the true understanding of the law goes beyond textbooks and courtrooms; it involves actively engaging with legal issues and finding innovative solutions wether thats with peers, with the help of legal advisor, or colleagues. The Lex Fellowship's emphasis on experiential learning and exposure to various facets of the legal profession aligns perfectly with my vision for a career in law. On this program i was able immerse myself in the day-to-day realities of legal practice. Coming out of this fellowship i can now envision myself honing in on my skills, gaining a nuanced understanding of legal complexities, and learning how to navigate the challenges of the legal profession effectively. Not to mention the connections i made with not only the other fellows on this program but with attorneys who are in my field interest were so invaluable and still active to this day.

SN: It was my birthday one of the days of the program, the fellows, legal advisor, and city mangers sang happy birthday to me 3 times, iI never felt so special and loved. Im extremely grateful for the bonds that developed from this program and to be around such Like- minded, inspiring individuals. This was a definitely a experience that will NEVER be forgotten!

Madrid Spain Lex Fellowship Experience

I loved this program! We learned everything we need to know for each part of our journey to becoming lawyers. We learned everything we need to know for applying to law school. We also learned tricks and tips for succeeding in law school and what law school will be like. Meeting with lawyers was so much fun. We got to experience what it would be like to be real lawyers. We learned how to solve cases. We did a lot of work but we still had a lot of time to create friendships and explore the city. We also had a counselor who was able to answer any questions or concerns that we have about law school. The housing was also very nice. It was updated and clean. I really had an amazing experience at the Lex Program In Madrid. I would definitely do it again if I could.

  • Prepares you with information on how to do well in law school
  • Allows you to experience what It would be like to be a lawyer
