About Program

Come volunteer at our friendly community center and make a meaningful impact in the lives of Syrian refugee children. Our center serves as a safe haven for Syrian families, providing essential support and fostering a nurturing environment where they can rebuild their lives.

As a volunteer, you will engage in a variety of enriching activities that cater to the diverse needs of our community. One of the critical areas of support is physiotherapy, where you can help children regain their physical strength and mobility, offering them a chance to overcome the physical challenges they face.

Teaching local children is another cornerstone of our volunteer program. By offering educational support, you empower these young minds, helping them catch up on lost schooling and giving them the tools they need for a brighter future. Your efforts can ignite a passion for learning and instill a sense of hope and possibility in their lives.

Consider your impact: Volunteering abroad can be a rewarding experience for both volunteers and local communities, and at Go Overseas, we believe all volunteers should have the resources to make informed decisions about the type of volunteer project they want to partake in. However, despite best intentions, some organizations offering placements in orphanages may unknowingly place children in danger. You can read about the potential dangers of orphanage volunteering here.

Inspiring Work with Syrian Refugee Children in Şanlıurfa

Volunteering as an English tutor in Şanlıurfa, Turkey, with the Ummah Care Foundation (UCF) was one of the most fulfilling experiences I’ve had. I worked with Syrian children who often lack access to regular schooling or whose education is insufficient. These kids were amazing—well-behaved, eager to learn, and truly inspiring. I’m still in touch with many of them and continue tutoring them online, which shows the lasting bonds we created.

UCF does remarkable work beyond education, offering physiotherapy for disabled refugee children and providing a warm, welcoming environment that feels like a second home for these kids. The center is a safe space where they can learn, play, socialize, and just enjoy being children. While there, I also participated in food and diaper distribution for families in need. UCF even hosted a doctor to give talks to women in the community on breast cancer awareness and periods, which was very empowering and impactful.

The hospitality at UCF was exceptional. They provided delicious food and comfortable accommodations, and the staff treated us like family. It was truly a home away from home, and I’m grateful for the friendships I made there.

I highly recommend the Ummah Care Foundation to anyone looking to volunteer abroad. Their work is meaningful and impactful, and the cause they support is noble. If you want to make a difference while being welcomed with open arms, UCF is the place to go!

What was your funniest moment?
The kids were generally so funny and always kept me laughing! Since I’m Egyptian, they would often make playful references to lines from Egyptian movies. It was hilarious and heartwarming to see how much they knew about Egyptian culture, and their jokes made our time together even more enjoyable!

UCF Centre - Sanliurfa

I have spent 2 weeks at the centre in 2024. One week in February and one week in July.
The centre serves Syrian refugee families. It was initially set up to provide physiotherapy to disabled refugee children.
Over the years it has become a part of the local Syrian refugee community.
There are a variety of activities happening there - English lessons for children ranging from 5 years to 15 years. Lessons in classrooms and lessons online. Food distributions. Counselling and support for widows and struggling families. Activities for children. Dental check-ups for children from a visiting dentist.
The Syrian refugees in Sanliurfa have very little help or support and many are struggling financially. They have limited access to education or healthcare. Many don't have even their basic needs met.
The UCF Centre has become an essential part of the local refugee community.
Staff are friendly and welcoming. Anna is present at most times to provide support to the volunteers. Other staff speak a reasonable level of english.
During my time there, I helped in teaching the children and interacting with the families.
I also helped with the food distribution and organising parties and activities for the children. I was also able to practice my Arabic with everyone at the centre.
It was a very rewarding experience and I felt valued as a volunteer.
Sanliurfa is a safe city and we walked and took local transport to explore the sights.
There are nice tourist places to visit and a couple of shopping centres as well.
I was very happy with my time there and will be going back in the future.

Pros
  • Friendly and Welcoming
  • Safe
  • Very flexible- Can volunteer in a variety of different activities.
