Blast in Belize

This was such an amazing experience where I was able to give back to the community and feel immersed in another culture. I am grateful for this experience and the memories and experiences I was given. Definitely go on this trip if you have the opportunity and make sure you take in all there is to offer. The accommodations at Hode’s place were incredible and everyone was very welcoming. Working with the clients at camp was rewarding and I enjoyed getting to watch them achieve their goals! The excursions packed into this trip were fun and educational. We were lucky enough to go cave tubing, ziplining, learn about the Mayan women’s collaborative, visit and archeological site, go snorkeling, and many more. I highly recommend this experience for anyone given the opportunity!

This experience was so unique and fun . I was able to practice my skills but also enjoy the culture of Belize. The trip was a great mixture of fun and learning . We got to emires ourselves into the culture and community. Everyone was so welcoming and accommodating to all of my group . We also go to do a handful of amazing excursions. From swimming with sharks and stingrays to zip line from 6 different spots . Although this trip exceed all my expectations I didn’t plan to bond and have such a great time with my group .

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
When I was working with my client I was so surprised how much of an impact I was able to have with her from simple modeling and verbal cues .

Belize was so fun!

This trip was once a once in a lifetime experience! I’m feeling very grateful and humbled by working with this community. The clients were amazing and allowed me to put my clinical skills to hard use. The excursions were awesome and I did a lot of things out of my comfort zone. Some of the excursions were on days of camp which was exhausting but I’m happy to have been able to squeeze everything in! All of the fruit we ate was so fresh and I’m very appreciative of everything that the staff has done for this group.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Swam with sharks!
Pros
  • Working with kids with a variety of disabilities
  • Practicing my skills and learning so much
  • Exploring a new culture during excursions
Cons
  • Not enough time for documentation

Salus OT

I loved how I was able to do this experience with my friends and make amazing memories while helping the community. This a trip that I will never forget and would recommend it to anyone to do it. I’m so glad I stepped out of my comfort zone and did this experience. It was amazing that I was able to leave such an impact on the community at the camp. It was awesome to be the first OT students to go there and start a base for future OT students to build off of what we started at the camp in San Ignacio.

What was your funniest moment?

Salus University Belize Trip

Study abroad has great learning opportunities as well as amazing opportunities to immerse in cultures different then your own. We had the privilege to visit community markets, eat local food, Zumba with residents, and learn how to make pottery and tortillas from scratch! We also went to the beach, snorkeled in the second largest barrier reef in the world, and went cave tubing and ziplining! As a student, this is an awesome way to gain knowledge about various cultures and help individuals that have limited resources to be successful in all areas of occupation. We have been told by professors that therapy can be provided with the items in your pocket, and with this experience, we were able to see what that really met and had the ability to display our potential to be wonderful clinicians to both ourselves, our faculty, and to the individuals receiving services!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Everything we did was amazing. From snorkeling in the second largest barrier reef in the world and seeing manatees to seeing and climbing ancient archaeological site steps, there was never a dull moment! So many fun, surprising and educational adventures!
Pros
  • Many excursions
  • Opportunities for individual learning opportunities during OT sessions
  • Information about cultures and customs of the people of Belize
Cons
  • slight problem with staff at one of the accommodations

A Worthwhile Experience! Belize 2024

Directly following undergrad graduation, I hopped on a plane and traveled with Therapy Abroad to Belize! In just 8 days, my peers and I got to explore a new country, immerse ourselves in the Belizean culture, and gain valuable clinical experience heading into graduate school. After participating in this trip, I have more confidence in my abilities as a clinician. I enjoyed trying new foods; participating in snorkeling, deep sea fishing, and Belizean traditional drumming; and getting to work with my first ever clients.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Make sure to pack a lot of sunscreen and bug spray, stay hydrated, participate in everything with an open mind, and get ready to enjoy a trip of a lifetime!
Pros
  • Safe and well-organized trip.
  • Gain clinical experience in a different country.
  • Many new experiences.
Cons
  • Our water shut off during our trip for a few hours.

Trip of a lifetime

This trip to Belize was my first time abroad and I couldn’t have asked for better. Experiencing the culture in Belize and all of the kind and wonderful people who make this community what it is was truly remarkable. Therapy Abroad made maneuvering a new country seamless, fun, and worthwhile. We had the best time delivering speech and language services to children in Belize who otherwise would not receive these services. Just amazing overall! I can’t wait to return or hopefully go somewhere else with Therapy Abroad. Can’t thank them enough for all they do for students and individuals in need of therapy services!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I got to try Conch!
Pros
  • Jam packed schedule
  • Location
  • People
