About Program

Costa Rica is filled with a colourful array of animals, white beaches, lush rainforests, rivers, volcanoes and smiling communities. The national motto is "Pura Vida," meaning Pure Life, and the volunteer projects offered by International Student Volunteers (ISV) reflect this sentiment in every way. ISV works with grassroots initiatives to address social and environmental issues facing this Central American country, in methods that directly benefit locals. Projects range from wildlife conservation, community development, children's programs and environmental management.

You could be observing the feeding behavior of endangered species, mapping habitats, monitoring dolphin populations, or taking beach patrols to protect turtle nests. Community development projects involve working alongside locals in recycling, reforestation, trail building, organic farming and habitat restoration. For more details on how to preserve Costa Rica’s valuable biodiversity, visit ISV's website today!

How ISV Costa Rica Changed my Views

I had no idea all the big and little things in my life that I could change that could help to bring change to the world. My experience in Costa Rica helped me see that and I will be forever thankful for it.

What would you improve about this program?
The cost was slightly high.

Save the Dolphins

This program is an tropical opportunity to make a difference for a foreign habitat, learn about the culture, and travel abroad with amazing people.
For the first two weeks, we did the volunteer part where we observed dolphins. The available boat was small, so half of us would go out and record dolphin activity while the other half went on a rainforest hike every day. The bungalows we stayed in were fun and the food was good. The next two weeks we did too fast of a journey around the country. We were in a place for one day and then left. We spent too much time on a bus. They scheduled us for one beach day before busing us somewhere else, and the beach is what everyone was looking forward to the most. But if we had spent more time in a few places rather than as many as we saw, we wouldnt have been able to do as many activities, and you can not beat ziplining, surfing, rapelling, hiking, and white water rafting in some of the most amazing tropical settings. HUGE BUGS.

What would you improve about this program?
We spent only one day on the beach. IN COSTA RICA. I would give the volunteers more beach time in Costa Rica, because that is a big deal.

a must

i was involved in the costa rica community rehabilitation project, based in providencia. it was an amazingly authentic experience as we got to live with the locals, and so we got to live like a local.

for the first week we learned about organic farming and assisted in the process of fertilising coffee farms. for the second we concreted a large stretch of hill road. both these projects were decided to be of importance by the providencia locals themselves, giving them the respect that they knew what was best for their own community. our project leader, jonathan cerdas, is without doubt one of the single most inspirational people i have ever had the privilege of meeting. he was so passionate and enthusiastic about his work that it instantly made us feel exactly the same.

it was by far the single most humbling and humanising experience of my life, and i hope to continue doing a whole lot more of it.

What would you improve about this program?
i would change the maximum time stay. at the time of our projects, two weeks volunteering was the maximum. i felt that two weeks was the minimum to get a feel for providencia, and would have loved to stay for at least a month.

Pura Vida!

Hands down the best experience of my student life. Beaches, sea turtles, sand, surf, and relaxation. What more could you ask for? The thunderstorms at night were the best part - and the howler monkeys would sing along!

What would you improve about this program?
Better rain gear! :)

Costa Rica with ISV Jan 2014

I had an amazing experience in Costa Rica. The volunteer project was definitely the best part for me, it was such a different and incredible location in the remote tropical rainforest of the Osa Peninsula. We had a whole beach to ourselves and the rainforest right behind us, and met so many beautiful people. The hiking was tough but knowing we were contributing to helping preserve the rainforest in the region made it very satisfying. The other ISV participants also made the experience so worthwhile as I met some great friends that I still even after the trip.

What would you improve about this program?
The only thing I would change is that the price is quite high. I know that it includes a lot but cheaper flights could have been arranged.

Questions & Answers

I don't believe you can scuba dive. You can however snorkel, in fact they take you to a small fishing village in which you can snore at with beautiful corals.
