About Program

Adanu is a Ghanaian-led non-profit organization. Our model empowers villages to create and build their own future through education. Since 2002, Adanu has hosted volunteers of all ages to help build schools, libraries, latrines, teach in schools, develop and build WASH projects, and be a part of the community.

Adanu means 'wise collaboration' in the local Ewe language. As an Adanu volunteer, you work side-by-side with villagers to build their educational and WASH infrastructure . You will be welcomed with open arms as you support the goals of the village and immerse yourself in the culture and beauty of the Volta Region.

Our volunteers also meet with village committees and other key stakeholders to fully understand the needs, challenges and goals of the community.

The Adanu Experience

This was my second time going and I'm sure it won't be my last time. Each trip had it's own unique experience, which is why Adanu is so great; you get to experience something new every time. Every village is just a little different, some specialize in fishing or weaving, dancing or cooking, the list goes on. It was great to learn about each thing while helping out the village. We were blessed with the opportunity to help build a library and sanitation system for my first go around. The second go around we helped build a library. Although this is hard work and not to mention the sun beating down on you throughout the day, it's the people that keep me coming back and knowing that we are making a difference. Ghana has the nicest and most kind people I've ever met and the people who work with Adanu are the best! They become your family. I look forward to the next time!

If I were to give any advice, it would be bring a mosquito net! The bugs aren't really that bad, but at night it can get pretty bug infested. The only other piece of advice would be to go with an open mind and say yes to every thing. Try and just go with the flow!

After the program we were able to raise enough money to get a van for the team in Ghana, which was awesome. The second go around we are really close to meeting our goal and should reach it this year. I think this has impacted me as I try and get more involved with non-profits and giving to charities. It really shows you have blessed we are to live in the United States.

My favorite memory is still waking up every morning and all the kids chanting my nickname that was given to me there "JoJo!!" Then going back two years later and visiting that village and everyone chanting my name again! Also break dance battling on rock and dirt was a great memory that will stick with me.

What would you improve about this program?
I'm not sure, it's pretty great. I think for those who are picky eaters, perhaps there is other food that they can try? For me, I loved the food, but I know in some of my groups, food was difficult for some. Or perhaps tell them to bring some healthy snacks that will keep them full throughout the week.
