About Program

Volta Aid Foundation (VAF) is a dynamic organization based in the Volta Region of Ghana. VAF is built around the fundamental belief that each and every person, in each and every corner of the globe, has the right to social advancement through education, knowledge and empowerment and believes this is a service owed to humanity.

At VAF we do not believe in volunteers paying exorbitant fees and ‘administrative costs’ when all you want to do is come and make a difference. VAF is a real, practical organization and, started by a former volunteer, we know exactly what volunteers need and want. Our program fees include food, accommodation and airport pick up and transfer.

Our programs include teaching, orphanage positions, hospital placements, diabetes awareness, microfinance and first aid workshops. There is the possibility of combining programs together and there are no fixed dates.

This program is no longer offered. View more programs from Volta Aid Foundation.

Consider your impact: Volunteering abroad can be a rewarding experience for both volunteers and local communities, and at Go Overseas, we believe all volunteers should have the resources to make informed decisions about the type of volunteer project they want to partake in. However, despite best intentions, some organizations offering placements in orphanages may unknowingly place children in danger. You can read about the potential dangers of orphanage volunteering here.

Volta Aid Review

Volta Aid Foundation Review
I highly recommend Volta Aid Foundation to any first time or veteran traveler! I am a 23 year old female pre-med college student and EMT from South Dakota. I wanted to find an inexpensive, safe, reliable organization to do medical work with. This was my first trip alone overseas and I was nervous, naturally. I put a lot of effort into researching different orgs in order to find one that seemed legitimate. If you are in the same position I was, look no further because VAF is an amazing organization. My volunteer coordinator was waiting for me at the airport when I arrived. I had some difficulties with host families at first, but all it took was one phone call and everything was straightened out. The family I ended up staying with were wonderful. They were welcoming and friendly. We were fed home cooked meals three times a day and the food was amazing! I spent three weeks at a small clinic and got to perform injections, blood testing, run the vitals station, and shadow with the physicians. I felt safe my ENTIRE stay in Ghana, even when travelling on the weekends. The local people are extremely friendly and inviting. I never once felt threatened by anyone, but it is always wise to keep an eye out. The culture is easy to get assimilated to and the language is somewhat easy to pick up on. Overall, my trip to Ghana was a big investment, but was totally worth every penny. The people I met are now like family. It was a once in a lifetime experience that I will cherish forever. Volta Aid Foundation made this possible!

An Amazing (and cheap) Experience

My whole experience with Volta Aid was overall amazing. I am a young female college student from Wisconsin so finding an affordable program was a must for me. The volunteer coordinator was extremely helpful when I was preparing for my trip and was there to meet me at the airport when I arrived in Accra. The host family I stayed with in Ho was very accommodating and I was fed a delicious homecooked meal three times a day. I was able to volunteer in the summer for 5 weeks. 3 of those weeks I shadowed a physician and lab techs at a local public hospital and the last 2 I worked at an orphanage.

What would you improve about this program?
I wish there was more for me to do at the public hospital. It was great getting the shadowing experience in, but I had to be pretty proactive about trying to help out.

First time traveling to Africa? Highly Recommend Volta Aid

Volunteering with Volta Aid Foundation was one of the best decisions ever. Being a young female college student from America, I was extremely nervous when I was searching for a decent organization to volunteer for. I came across so many expensive organizations and even some frauds! Finding an affordable and trusting organization was not easy. The main reason why I chose Volta Aid was for their pricing. It was affordable! Preparing for my trip was not stressful either. The staff at Volta Aid did a great job emailing me all the information I needed for the trip and were helpful when I had questions. I was very nervous when I landed in Ghana and didn't know what to expect, but all the staff members at Volta Aid were extremely welcoming. I volunteered at an orphanage in a village that was half an hour away from the town where the main office was located. The people at Volta Aid always checked up on all us volunteers to make sure we were safe, comfortable, and happy. I know that Africa might make some people nervous when traveling, but the location of where we stayed at was 100% safe. The locals were always so happy and welcoming. The food was amazing too. They fed us home cooked meals 3 times a day. For those of you who are new to foreign food, I can proudly say that I didn't get sick once when I was in Ghana. Volunteers also got free filtered water. The orphanage where I stayed at had no running water, but I did not complain. The children were worth it! The volunteers staying at the orphanages got to live side by side with the orphans which was such a life changing experience. I've never felt so much love in such a short period of time!! I would strongly recommend Volta Aid Foundation to anyone wishing for a good heart warming experience. It was worth every penny and more!!

making a difference, in every way

I was lucky enough to volunteer at the Drifting Angels Orphanage, Tsito Ghana. I actually got to the orgpahange through a different roganisation but Volta Aid's presence and impact in the orphanage and on the volunteers did not compare. I came ready mentally but was completely unprepared by what the other local charity told me to bring, luckily Volta Aid was there to adopt me into their volunteer corps just with open arms as they do to anyone. I felt a part of their organisation, mission, and care while not even being an official volta aid volunteer. I have to say the local mosquitos knew how unprepared I really was. Every time one of the volta aid staff came they checked up on me, my mosquito bites, and if I need anything... along the way I felt a part of a family, of the orphanage, and of Ghana and a lot of that is thanks to Volta Aid.

Unforgettable time

I have learnt a lot during my time with VAF in Ghana. They guys from VAF welcomed me very warmly and with open arms. It was a culture shock for me at the beginning, but I could reached them all the time when I needed some advice. VAF is very professional, serious and passionate about what they are doing in the Volta Region. It was like a family! I enjoyed to meet the other volunteers to talk about our every day adventures. Thank you VAF! I will definitely go back, because you touched my heart forever.

Best organisation to volunteer with!

Not only does Volta Aid Foundation supports great projects and has an amazing connection to their volunteers, by giving them a suiting placement, checking on them regularly for real (not like some other organisations who claim to do so, but in reality call once a month, no they really visit you regularly and take good care of your needs). Also they're not looking for huge profits for themselves like all of the other organisations I worked with. The program cost is so low but still they manage to give donations to the project. You can have a good look at whatever your money goes trough, they are very clear and honest about it. Also they helped a friend of mine, who didn't even volunteer trough VAF, renewing her visum and therefore spent enormous amounts of time at the embassy with her, without asking any 'payments' for that... These are the people that 'change the world'!
Thank you very much for the best experience of my life!

2 months with Volta Aid Foundation

Volunteering with Volta Aid Foundation is a great oppurtunity to be part of the Ghanaian lifestyle. I chose to be part of the Orphanage Caring program which allowed me to help with daily chores in the orphanage, teach in the pre-school run by volunteers, help the school age children with homework, play with the kids, and explore other towns on my weekends. I felt very safe my entire trip and recommend this fantastic organisation to everyone!
