Peruvian Amazon: Endangered Primate Conservation Research
- Peru
About Program
We need volunteers and interns to assist us with applied research of wild and endangered primate groups in the remote, primary rainforests of the Peruvian Amazon. Participants will support the vital work of our Primate Conservation Research Team, in tracking groups, recording behavior and analyzing data to understand the true impact of human development on endangered primate populations. We need to better understand the current status--and assist with conserving--the endangered Peruvian black spider monkey (Ateles chamek) and at least 9 other species of primate found in the Las Piedras Watershed, a frontier wilderness area. Research undertaken by the team helps ARCAmazon and its partners determine conservation strategies for the establishment the Las Piedras Corridor. Las Piedras, under growing threat from illegal logging and unsustainable agriculture, forms part of the Tropical Andes Biodiversity Hotspot and is home to some of the last Uncontacted Tribes left on Earth.
