Language & Culture in Seoul, South Korea

I had a wonderful experience. The program was a very special experience, especially as a high school student. Being able to learn Korean language while immersing in the culture through a welcoming homestay and excursions to visit places in which we learn about the history and traditions was very fascinating. It was amazing getting to explore the city and trying new food with free time. The class sizes are also relatively small and section based on our language level which was great because it gave classes that fitted with our level of the language.

Pros
  • Korean language learning
  • Many activities to do/ places to explore
  • Great food
What other participants should know
  • During July, it’s there monsoon season so it is quite humid and rain often
  • Curfew
  • Language barrier

Summer Session 1, Language & Culture Summer Study Abroad

I feel like my time abroad was truly an amazing experience. Going into the trip I didn't really have any expectations and didn't think that my time abroad would be as influential as it was! I learned so much about myself, Korean culture, and got to engage with like minded peers. There is so much to do in Korea and a large majority of my interactions were extremely positive. In addition , my homestay host was so kind and helpful when it came to adapting and learning about how to navigate through Korean culture. Furthermore, the classes and the teachers were all so friendly and incredibly encouraging. I will say, if you choose to go abroad, once you come back home, you will long to go back to the country you spent time in, and I feel the CIEE South Korea cohort as a whole will ensure that you make the most of your time abroad.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I could repeat my time abroad, I would make a better attempt to actually engage with the locals. I feel I wasn't confident in my Korean ability, so I didn't speak as much Korean as I would have liked, especially being that the interactions that I did have with locals were very good.
Pros
  • So many food places, cafes, and activities to do.
  • Everyone is generally very helpful.
  • Public transit is very efficient.
What other participants should know
  • More extensive language learning

Seoul, Language and Culture

I thought that Seoul a really fun, interesting exciting city. I met a lot of people through the program and I went to a lot new places my biggest worry before I went was the language barrier, but I must say what’s the people in Korea the younger generation know English so the language barrier wasn’t that bad. There was also a lot of new cultural practices and new types of food that I tried all the food that was super yummy and I absolutely loved it. The program brought us to a lot of different places for example like the Namsan Tower, Museums, dance classes, and you also had a lot of free time to explore the city yourselves in your own time. If you’re worried about going alone, there’s absolutely nothing to worry about because I’ve met so much new people that I felt really close to during the program because they’re all super nice and fun to be around. I really recommend to go since it’s a experience that you can find nowhere else.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I think the most surprising thing that I saw was how clean the city was compared to where I live. The city has super little trash cans and a really strict rule about recycling but super clean and neat.
Pros
  • Olive Young
  • Yummy delicious food
  • Tax refund
What other participants should know
  • Language barrier
  • Holding trash for a while
  • Curfews

My Summer with CIEE

My experience with CIEE Korea was one of the best experiences I've ever had as junior in high school. At first, I was nervous about being away from home, but my host mom made me feel welcome right away. I loved spending time with my host family, trying homemade Korean food, and even getting to be around their cat. Throughout the program, I made amazing friends, explored Seoul, and learned so much about Korean culture. The month went by much faster than I expected because there was always something exciting to do.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Don't be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone. Try new foods, talk to new people, and take every opportunity to learn about the culture around you. The more you put yourself out there, the more you'll get out of the experience.
Pros
  • Making friends from different places
  • Exploring Seoul and learning about Korean culture
  • Creating memories that will last a lifetime
What other participants should know
  • Homesickness during the first few days
  • Long days with lots of activities
  • Language barriers in some situations

My time with CIEE @ Korea

I really enjoyed my time in Seoul. I made so many fond memories with my host family and new friends that the whole month basically flew by because of all the fun we were having!! Despite having been homesick the first few days, the program does a great job at distracting us from that feeling but also give us that support that we can always just talk to them about it, as well as to other teens who are going through the same thing you are. Overall, the food, homestays, and places were my highlight!!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Do everything!! Whether it’s trying new transportation, participating in cultural activities, or even trying new foods, always do your best to fully immerse yourself in the new cultural space your in as you’re more than likely to never be a teen again traveling abroad!
Pros
  • Homestay Families
  • Food
  • Visiting places + teachers
What other participants should know
  • Stares from older adults
  • Some staff weren’t very helpful in certain situations
  • A little unorganized at times

It was fun and new!

I really enjoyed the experience,it was a lot of fun. It wasn’t too hard adapting to the new culture and I liked how we had different level classes based on your proficiency. You mostly hang out with your roommates and classmates, but everyone was very nice. Also I think I had a pretty time to adapt to the culture. Korea is very respect based and also I think it’s very important not to be loud or Immodest. Since respect is so huge. I’m a black, larger sized girl but everyone was very kind and I didn’t have any issues with staring or anything like that. I would recommend the program and the trip. It grew my independence and made me much more prepared for being an adult.

Pros
  • Lots of yummy food/ places to see
  • Also great for shopping
What other participants should know
  • Trains/buses can be hard to navigate at first
  • Bad if you don’t like walking a lot,expect 10k a day

CIEE High School Study Abroad - Seoul, South Korea

The experience of going abroad, particularly in South Korea, was nothing short of extraordinary. CIEE transformed my dreams into reality after years of meticulous research and daydreaming about international travel. I wholeheartedly recommend CIEE due to their unwavering passion, patience, understanding, and genuine love for those who embark on the journey of studying and traveling abroad. This transformative experience would not have been possible without CIEE’s unwavering support, and I am eternally grateful for the choice I made.
