Best 4 months ever

Florence was so amazing. CEA made it so easy to allow me to study interesting classes, and to explore Europe as well. They also had a lot of planned excursions, such as Venice, which were all included within the program. The teachers were also super knowledgeable, and you can tell that they were genuinely excited to pass on their wealth of information to us. A personal highlight of mine while studying abroad was visiting Rome for the first time. Florence is a great spot to be in as you are only a short train ride away from all the major destinations. I'd choose Florence 100 more times.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Budget effectively! It's super easy to lose track of spending. One way I saved money was cooking a lot. Italy had such great grocery options for me (I'm vegetarian) so it allowed me to cook a lot.
Pros
  • Food
  • History
  • Culture
Cons

Once in a lifetime experience!!

CEA CAPA truly made my abroad experience seamless! I did the summer internship program, and it blew away all my expectations. I learned more than I ever would've thought, and CEA CAPA advisors were very hands-on and helpful every step of the way! Everyone should go abroad!! It pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way and helped me grow both personally and professionally. I made unforgettable memories, met amazing people, and gained experiences that will stay with me forever. I am still friends with the people I met abroad, which is so cool to me! And we still share stories to this day. I can’t recommend it enough!

Studying Abroad in Florence With CEA CAPA Changed my Life

Studying abroad in Florence with CEA CAPA was genuinely one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The program made everything feel so welcoming and easy from the moment I arrived. My classes were interesting and hands-on, and I loved that the professors encouraged us to explore the city and connect what we were learning to real experiences. Florence itself felt like the perfect place for a study abroad. It is so walkable, safe, and full of amazing food, culture, and small everyday moments that made the whole semester feel special. CEA CAPA also planned great excursions that helped me see more of Italy than I ever expected. I left feeling more confident, independent, and open to trying new things. If you’re considering Florence, I honestly can’t recommend it enough. I made some of my closest friends, learned so much about myself, and still think about it all the time. It’s an experience that truly stays with you forever.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I could do it all over again, the one thing I’d change is letting myself live in the moment more. I was always looking forward to my next weekend trip, and even though traveling was amazing, it made the whole semester fly by way faster than I expected. I wish I had slowed down, soaked up more of the little everyday things in Florence, and given myself more time to just be there instead of always planning what was next. It goes by so fast, so enjoy every minute!
Pros
  • The CEA CAPA staff were so supportive and made the transition feel easy.
  • Florence was the perfect city to study abroad in. It is walkable, safe, and so beautiful.
  • The excursions and classes helped me learn outside the classroom and see more of Italy.
Cons
  • The program goes by so fast, I wish there were more weeks.
  • Weekends get busy with travel, so it’s easy to feel like time is flying.

The Nuance of Choosing an Internship

My experience abroad was incredible, and I am so glad that I pushed myself out of my comfort zone. It was hard for me to reconcile the fact that I was the only one of my friends and roommates to intern abroad. It was a big time commitment, and there were a few opportunities that I felt I should say no to in order to prioritize my internship experience. However, I began to realize that there were opportunities that I was privy to that my peers were not. After coming back to the Unites States, my internship has already helped me in my professional life and career aspirations. For those struggling to decide whether to intern abroad, I think it can be an incredibly valuable exposure if you are committed!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Open yourself to new ideas, cultures, and experiences. It is good to push yourself and expand your way of thinking! Try to make new friends, both those who are studying abroad, and those who live locally.
Pros
  • Incredible travel oppurtunities
  • Checking off bucket list items in multiple countries
  • Career readiness and preparation
Cons
  • Homesickness for friends and familiies
  • Time commitment of interning abroad
  • Cost of living and traveling abroad

Florence in the summer

The opportunity to study abroad is one I recommend taking. So many things I experienced were completely novel and unique to Europe and travelling alone. The CEA CAPA staff in Florence was absolutely wonderful, and they were able to get me and a few other musical students a live music gig with a decent turnout. They were sweet and helpful, and so was my internship employer.

However, Florence in the summer is brutal. It was even hotter than I expected (no AC) and the tourists are EVERYWHERE. My overall experience was good, but between the sweltering heat and the constant crowds (almost all Americans by the way) it is genuinely hard to get comfortable in that city.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
We got an incredible view of Queens of the Stone Age in Pistoia (close to Florence) and met a couple of British students (a brother/sister) who let us sleep in their incredibly hot airbnb after we spend the rest of the night out together
Pros
  • Affordable travel access (if you know where to look)
  • Historical
Cons
  • Sweltering heat, humidity without rain
  • Insane amounts of tourists

Interning in the Regional Government of Tuscany

I got to live in Florence for two and a half months this summer with CEA CAPA's internship abroad program. Because I was already fluent in Italian and interested in government work, the wonderful staff managed to place me in the President's office of the Regional Government of Tuscany! I had an amazing work experience, and got to create and lead an intercultural relations project that will result in a better experience and more governmental support for future study abroad students. I also loved the paired cultural class, that taught students about intercultural differences and what it takes to work abroad.
Outside of work and class, CEA CAPA made sure we had opportunities to travel with four different day trips, explore the city with frequent tours and events, and meet other students with sports and art days. The staff was amazing, and every single one of them clearly loved their job and helping students.
I also explored a lot on my own, joining a martial arts gym to continue my practice and training, and renting a violin and playing a few gigs. If I had the chance to do this again, I absolutely would!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Always be first. You have to take the initiative to do what you want. Learn the language, and talk to people. Continue your hobbies: join gyms, play your instrument, make art! Learn about their culture and try to fit in. Don't be a rude tourist, care about your host community and always behave respectfully.
Pros
  • Food
  • Travel and exploration
  • Life changing learning opportunity
Cons
  • Roommate situation was not the best
  • Some bias against foreigners due to overtourism
  • The party scene was very extreme, way too much for me

Fall 2024

I found myself right at home in Florence due to CEA CAPA's constant support. I was challenged academically while getting to experience an amazing new place. I loved my apartment and roommates, who I grew strong connections with and have stayed in close contact with since returning home. My room overlooked a beautiful piazza with a direct view of the Duomo. I lived within a 15-20 minute walk of my classes, which was extremely convienient for me. I got to take a wide variety of classes in Marketing, Design, and Communications strengthening my passion for these fields.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-racking thing I did was travel on my own for the first time. Traveling can always be stressful, especially when you do not know the language of the country you are in fluently. I was very stressed to travel outside of Italy by myself for the first tine to go and visit my friend and was an anxious wreck. I prepared beforehand and mapped out the different trains I needed to take, which really helped.
Pros
  • housing
  • experiences provided
  • culture
Cons
  • tourism
  • limited classes
