Teaching in Fukuoka

After applying for internships in Japan through Meiji Internships I was able to gain teaching experience in Fukuoka. My work was usually from 2-10 pm, where I advanced from a teaching assistant to running my own classes. My students were a pleasure to teach and I formed many good friendships with them that I hope to stay in touch with. My accomodation was simple but perfectly adequate and only a 25 minute walk to work. The area around my flat was excellent, as it included everything I could need: restaurants, shops, a subway, and sightseeing. On the weekends and I was able to explore Kyushu and experience so much that Japan had to offer. My major recommendation is Beppu, a city with amazingly coloured hot springs. I also loved trying Japanese food, especially foods that I had never heard of such as motsunabe (of course ramen and sushi were as delicious as you would expect). I highly recommend going to Japan as it is unlike any other country and an experience you will never forget.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Motsunabe, a stew of guts, served with horse sashimi

Learning Experience!

I will be starting university in the fall with a double major in engineering and asian studies. As a result, I was hoping to be able to be connected with an engineering internship in Japan through Meiji, but realized this was a stretch considering my lack of prerequisite courses and experience in the field. I was a little hesitant to continue with an internship in tourism and marketing, but ultimately decided it would be a good opportunity to learn about Japanese business and daily life. I also reasoned that it would make doing a future internship in engineering much easier, as I would gain transferable skills and knowledge, as well as have many networking opportunities during my time here. My hopes turned out to be correct, and I was able to accomplish all of these goals and more during my time here! I was also glad that through Meiji I was able to secure an internship where I did actual valued work. I got the chance the organize university trips and create spreads for luxury travel packages (which I especially enjoyed since it gave me some experience in graphic design).

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would have chosen to arrange my own accommodation. I try to see every difficulty as a learning experience, but one unnecessary complication to my stay was the sharehouse Meiji arrange for me. I am aware that it is difficult to find quality accommodation in Tokyo for a reasonable price, and I do appreciate the close location of my sharehouse to my internship, but I think it would have been worth the extra cost for me to find a superior accommodation on my own. Maybe it's a personal preference, but the sharehouse was just too dirty for me. I wish that Meiji had taken this into consideration when arranging my accommodation.

A fun learning experience!

This summer I worked with Meiji internship for finding me an internship in Tokyo. The process was very smooth and the staff replied email very fast. I applied for my summer intern very late and they helped me to land my intern in a few weeks.
I worked as a business (mainly finance) intern at a small company at Tokyo. I had a long term project about financial statements which allowed me to apply what I have learned into my daily work, and I also had a lot of short-term projects like clients meeting and product demos. The CEO of the company was also very knowledgeable and helpful along the way.
Besides work, I also got the chance to go around Tokyo and experience the fascinating Japanese culture.
It was a fun learning experience and I hope that I can come back to Tokyo again!

Useful skills for future international career

This year, I had an amazing time during my business development internship in Tokyo, Japan.
It was a very exciting experience to live in a new culture that is so different from my own. I had the pleasure to learn a new language, be part of the Japanese culture and gained many amazing friends and work experience. During the week, I worked at my host company and gained valuable marketing skills. My company was international, therefore, I had the opportunity to observe how business differs around the world and in different cultures! I also attended many interesting networking event which gave me a good insight into how business is conducted in Asia. On the weekends, I went on different trips around Japan and explored Tokyo.

This entire time, Meiji was very helpful and a great support.

What would you improve about this program?
It would be cool to get more information on Western food places around the area where I lived. I love Japanese food, but eating mostly rice and Japanese bentos for the first two weeks made me quite bored.

Hej Japan!

Hej! I am currently doing a working holiday in Japan. While I stay 10 months in total, I spent the first 2 months doing an internship in Fukuoka. To be 100 percent honest, I did not feel confident starting my adventure in Japan completely on my own, so I decided to do an internship before looking for an actual job. It was one of the best decision I have made in a very long time! I went with Meiji because I had read many good things about them and they helped me a lot. I did my internship with a local tourism company. That was the perfect start into the Japanese labour world. My favourite part about interning in Fukuoka was not only my internship itself, but also the activities arranged by Meiji. As I mentioned before, I felt a little insecure about embarking on this adventure on my own. But I met many cool people through Meiji’s activities and language exchanges. Internationals as well as Japanese! We even went on a backpacking trip to Kansai together!

In total, doing the internship with Meiji was the best start for my gap year! Thanks to the networking possibilities, I made many friends and found my first job in Japan that I started right after my internship ended. Meiji? Mange tak for alt dette!

What was your funniest moment?
Communicating with my Japanese Taxi driver only through Google Translate on my way from the airport. We had a great conversation though!

Internship In The Land Of The Rising Sun

I wanted to break out of my comfort zone and daily life. Going abroad is the perfect opportunity to achieve that goal. Additionally, I have always been keen to get to know the Japanese culture in depth. My host company combined my personal interest in the Japanese culture and my career goal in the consultation department.

Before I started my internship in Japan, Meiji offered me a Welcome Package with a lot of important information about Japan, the culture, sightseeing recommendations and more. On my first day in Japan, I visited their business workshop. However, I recommend gathering information about the business world in Japan even before your workshop.

The internship in Japan gave me the opportunity to set up a international network. I definitely need to visit all of them again and I am happy to welcome them at my hometown, if they stop by.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would have loved to stay longer and to have gotten myself a business card beforehand.

Awesome experience in Kansai!

I did a two months internship in Osaka after having a language course at Meiji in Fukuoka. The course really helped me communicating with people at my workplace and getting around. The company they placed me with was super cool and I met many people from all over the world, visiting Osaka or working there. I learned very much about the japanese working culture which is a little different from at home. The staff at Meiji was super accommodating through my whole time, from the first contact until the last days. They really made sure, I got what I wanted from my experience and a little more.

My boss was super nice as well and recommended local spots to me where I visited to relax.
I had very much fun with my co-workers and will definitely visit them the next time I am in Japan! :-)

What was your funniest moment?
Going to Nara with one of my friends and getting bumped into by deer fighting over the treats you can buy for them.

Photography Internship

I did my internship in Fukuoka, Japan. Meiji was very helpful in every step of the way. Going to another country to live and work in is not easy but the staff at Meiji were always there.
The staff was happy to assist with questions or complaints. The eight weeks that I spent in Japan were amazing. I had the opportunity to work as a photographer assistant. I learned a lot from my boss and was able to work on several projects like photo editing, shooting, video editing, color grading and much more.
I was able to meet local Japanese people my age and make new friends. Japan is a very safe place and the local people in Fukuoka are very friendly with foreigners. Overall my experience was great and I made many friendships and gained a lot of knowledge and new skills.
