About Program

The intensive one-on-one Chinese Program at Keats School is the most popular, and efficient, way to learn the Chinese language. One-on-one lessons give teachers the chance to meet the individual needs and interest of each student. It also gives the student more opportunities to practice speaking Chinese and to get real-time correction. At Keats School we individualize each lesson by developing curricula that matches the students proficiency level and goals. Teachers speak standard Mandarin and are fluent in English. The methods and different activities that we use at Keats will maximize the amount that a student learns in the time they study Chinese here.

An Unforgettable Experience at Keats School in Kunming

From the moment I arrived, everything was well arranged. They quickly sat down with me to figure out what I wanted to work on and built a study plan around that — which I really appreciated.
I stayed with a host family during my stay, which was honestly great. Really kind people, and just being around them in the evenings after class taught me a lot too. Things you just don't pick up in a classroom.
Six hours of private lessons a day is a lot, not going to lie. But it works. You're kind of forced to just go for it, and looking back that's exactly what I needed. My spoken Chinese improved way more in one week than I expected going in.
Would definitely recommend it to anyone who's serious about learning Mandarin and wants to actually make progress fast.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Just go for it and don't be afraid to make mistakes. The immersion is intense but that's the whole point — embrace it, speak as much as you can outside of class too, and make use of your host family. You'll progress faster than you think.
Pros
  • One-on-one lessons fully tailored to your level
  • Living with a host family adds a whole extra layer to the experience
Cons
  • Six hours of private lessons a day can be intense

Kunming school is best

It has been a very good learning experience overall. The improvement is clearly visible after continuous practice day by day. Every lesson is practical and closely connected to daily life, so what students learn is truly useful for real communication. The teachers are professional, patient and responsible. Every class is carefully planned and well prepared with rich topics, vocabulary and conversation practice. Students never feel bored during class, and they keep making progress in listening and speaking step by step.

We are staying in Kunming right now, and the city leaves all the students a wonderful impression. Kunming boasts pleasant weather all year round, with mild temperatures, bright sunshine and fresh air most days. Comfortable climatic conditions make our study and daily leisure time much more enjoyable. Today marks the final class of this study period, all learners maintained an excellent learning state throughout the whole session, and we finished targeted listening and oral practice with satisfying results. Later we will head to the local tea market to pick out tea together. This outdoor activity can not only serve as a nice ending for our whole course, but also let students experience local tea culture and practise Chinese dialogue in real shopping scenarios.

Four weeks in Kunming

I had the chance to spend for weeks at Keats in Kunming this summer and really enjoyed it.
From monday to friday, I had four hours of class in the morning and afternoons free to explore the city.
During this time, I feel like my chinese improved a lot, in particular to gain confidence to speak even if it is just short sentences to order food.
Many thanks to Ma Laoshi and Li Laoshi (李芳芳), who had patience in particular when it came to pronounciation.

Besides studying, Kunming has a lot parks to visit as well as tea and coffee to drink.
Every day there is an activity organized by Keats, with my highlights being the visit to the stone forest, and playing chinese chess.

Pros
  • Great Teachers
  • Surroundings and weather
  • Good Tea and Coffee

Learn Chinese in KEATS

I studied here for a week and i wish i did it for longer. I was fluent in basic chinese so it was easy to pick up on things but im sure if i had done it for a month or two i could reach HSK3. The teacher personalizes classes and i could see improvement real quick. Ms. Wang is the best cant wait to be back. Ms wang and claire were helpful not only during class but also beyond when i needed help with my life in Chengdu. They also have outdoor classes, where you can learn Chinese in fun way. They also have a campus in Kunming i would love to check that out too. The campus in chengdu is perfect for students its quiet but also not too far from city so you can go out conveniently after classes.I will come back again for sure. This is so worth it🥹.

KEATS Summer

The staff are all welcoming and nice. They provide snacks and a lively atmosphere. Overall I really enjoyed this experience and would highly recommend going here to study chinese.
I really love studying Chinese at this school in Chengdu. My teacher is extremely nice, patient and friendly. She always explains words and grammar clearly and encourages me to speak Chinese bravely in class. Besides regular lessons, there are plenty of fun afternoon activities every week. I joined many interesting group activities, including handcraft workshops. Making handmade works with classmates was such a wonderful and unforgettable experience. I can not only improve my Chinese skills here, but also experience authentic Chinese culture. The school environment is warm and comfortable. Every day I look forward to coming to class. It’s such a great place for foreign learners to learn Chinese and make new friends. I highly recommend this school

Excellent teacher

I took one-to-one Chinese lessons at Keats School for about five years. During that time, I had the opportunity to study with many excellent teachers, but Pi Laoshi is definitely one of the best teachers I have ever had. She quickly understood my Chinese level, learning style, and goals, and always adjusted her lessons to meet my needs. She was incredibly patient and explained difficult grammar and vocabulary in a way that was easy to understand. She also encouraged me to speak Chinese as much as possible, which greatly improved my confidence and communication skills. Whenever I made mistakes, she corrected them kindly and clearly, making every lesson enjoyable and productive. Her enthusiasm, professionalism, and dedication inspired me to continue studying Chinese. I truly appreciate all the time and effort she invested in helping me improve. I highly recommend Pi Laoshi to anyone who wants to learn Chinese from a knowledgeable, supportive, and outstanding teacher.

What would you improve about this program?

Learning Chinese in Chengde

Learning Chinese with the Keats school in Chengde is an amazing and immersive experience for anyone who would truly like to learn the language in a fun and immersive environment. As a smaller city everything is very immersive and provides many opportunities for daily use of the Chinese you may already know or are currently learning. Teacher Zhang is also a great instructor who cares deeply about making sure his students are learning well and having a good experience. Along with this Chengde is a beautiful city the provides great walks through parks along the river, beautiful national parks, beautiful temples, and delicious food. The people are also very welcoming and enthusiastic of any opportunity to speak to someone who is not from China and show them a good time and share their culture. There is also plenty to do at night from food stands, to night markets, to fun bars. I would highly recommend KEATS and Chengde for anyone who truly wants an immersive experience to get a good grasp of the Chinese language and culture.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
The most unfamiliar thing I ate was either Pig snout or Duck tongue and both of them were good and I would eat them again if provided the opportunity.
Pros
  • Welcoming people
  • Good instruction and learning
  • Delicious food
Cons
  • Not a big city if that’s what you’re looking for

My week at Keats

Sad to leave, but my week at Keats has come to an end. I have now completed 20 hours of studying the Mandarin Chinese language, and what an incredible experience it has been. Thank you to the Keats School and all the amazing teachers and staff who supported us every step of the way. From the excellent facilities and well-planned lessons to the excursions and welcoming community, everything exceeded my expectations. As a 30-year-old Australian, this was well outside my comfort zone, but I’m so glad I took the leap. I’ll definitely be back to continue my studies in the near future.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I could do this all over again, I’d 100% stay for longer.
For such a short period of time, I learnt so much. Not just about the language but about myself, the culture, the people.
If I had more time I would have stayed for longer. I will be back.
Pros
  • The amazing teachers
  • The facilities
  • Meeting new people
Cons
  • Time. I only had one week at Keats.
