A Great Chinese Learning Experience at Keats Chengdu

My experience studying Chinese in Chengdu at Keats was very positive and enjoyable. The class was well organized and adapted effectively to different learning levels while covering all important lessons, including speaking, listening, grammar, vocabulary, and real-life communication practice. The teachers were professional, patient, and supportive throughout the course. Teacher Hong and Teacher Wang were especially excellent, as they explained difficult topics clearly and created a comfortable and engaging learning environment. I also appreciated how the program combined structured classroom learning with practical daily conversations, which made studying in Chengdu both effective and memorable. Overall, Keats provided a high-quality learning experience that helped build confidence and improve Chinese language skills significantly.

Loved it

I studied at Keats School in Kunming with my tutor Du. Before coming to China, I knew almost no Chinese, so I was nervous at first. But Du made me feel comfortable straight away, and we got along very well. Every week we learned around 100 new words, and I was surprised that I could actually remember them. As a beginner, I appreciated that there was not a lot of heavy homework. Most of my learning came from reviewing flashcards and practicing naturally during class and daily life, which worked really well for me.

One of my favourite parts of studying at Keats was the outdoor lessons and cultural experiences. We visited places like the Cultural Village, Green Lake, flower markets, and local cafés. These experiences made learning Chinese feel real and connected to everyday life. I also loved getting milk tea almost every day. The city felt safe, lively, and full of character.

During my time there, I also went through some personal difficult moments, and Du was incredibly kind and comforting. I will always remember her patience and support, not only as a teacher but as a person.

My stay at Keats School itself was very comfortable. I loved my room — it had everything I needed, including a double bed, bathroom, thy cleaned once a week and a window facing the road. Willow was always very helpful whenever I needed anything and made me feel at home during my stay. The food was also wonderful, with delicious home-cooked meals every day that made the experience feel warm and welcoming. The other students were also so lovely and it was great to share meals and go on excursions with them.

Studying in Kunming was such a memorable experience for me, and I’m very grateful for my time at Keats School.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I was just worried about sounding silly but all that nervousness went away speaking with my tutor and the other students.
Pros
  • Supportive and patient teaching style that worked well for a complete beginner
  • Great cultural learning experiences outside the classroom
  • Comfortable and welcoming living environment

Very valuable experience

This week was a very special experience. The teachers were incredibly invested in our progress and structured the lessons in a way that made everything feel logical and achievable. I learned a lot — not just the language itself, but also fascinating insights into Chinese culture, traditions, and the thinking behind Mandarin. The way tones and characters connect to meaning really opened my eyes. Everything was organized very well, and the atmosphere was warm and encouraging. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to dive deeper into this beautiful language and culture!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I think I would do 4 hours instead of 6 hours a day. 4 hours straight in the morning was a bit too much.
Pros
  • Good teachers
  • Everything is organized well
  • Hostfamily

Amazing experience, can’t wait to come back!

My experience at Keats exceeded expectations! My teacher (Su laoshi) always came to class extremely prepared and tailored the content to my goals and level. After three weeks I feel like my Chinese has improved a lot. We also did outdoor classes to the museum, tea city and flower where I got to learn more about Yunnan history and culture.

Outside of the lessons I loved the lifestyle of living at Keats - the food was good, the advisors extremely helpful and I made so many friends and enjoyed doing activities and going on excursions with them.

谢谢郝老师和李老师!我很喜欢你们的课。

I just finished 5 days of 6-hour daily classes at Keats, and Hao Laoshi and Li Laoshi were amazing. This was actually my first time ever learning Chinese, so jumping straight into 6 hours a day was pretty daunting, but they made it a great experience.

They customized everything around exactly what I wanted to learn. In just five days, we covered ordering food, bargaining at the night markets, airport situations, hotel check-ins, and a lot about Chunjie and Chinese culture. They both put 100% effort into the class and even prepared custom notes and fuxi (review) materials for me to study every night.

Teaching a complete beginner for 6 hours a day takes massive patience and energy, but their enthusiasm never dropped once. They both went completely above and beyond for me. I really hope they get their maximum performance bonuses because they absolutely earned it this week.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would stay for a lot longer than just 5 days! Doing 6 hours a day was an intense marathon, but the progress was so fast that I wish I had booked a few weeks instead of just one. Any extra review you do outside of class will help you absorb a lot more knowledge - a few weeks can help you and your teachers reinforce what you have learnt much better.
Pros
  • 100% customized lessons tailored exactly to what I wanted to learn (ordering food, travel, culture)
  • Incredible patience and high energy from the teachers for a total beginner
  • Custom notes and daily fuxi (review) materials prepared for after-class study

Superb learning environment and excellent teaching

I had a wonderful time learning Chinese at Keats. The dorms and schedule took my back to university times and helped me feel more studious. I am very grateful for the help that my Chinese panther teacher Ms Hong provided for me. In one week I made so much progress it was unbelievable. Ms Hongs teaching style included a mix of review, positive reinforcement and repetition - these three were instrumental to achieving HSK 1 level. This experience has given me confidence once again to try new languages, including Korean which I’m currently studying.

Thank you to Keats and my teacher Ms Hong.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I had hotpot from a local spot and ate some foods I have never water before. I was scared tow try these because they seemed so you familer to me and I have a delicate stomach. It turned out just fine in the end. I also ate a spicy fruit salad which was amazing :)
Pros
  • 1:1 support from qualified teacher
  • Dorm with activities and people to meet
  • Helpful advisors
Cons
  • The 4 hour morning lessons were hard in the beginning. However, my teacher allowed me to have regular breaks!

Study in Beijing

My experience studying in Beijing was very positive and well structured. Study life was calm and focused, which was ideal for one‑on‑one learning. The school provided strong supporting services, including administrative guidance and accommodation and daily arrangements. The facilities were comfortable and well suited for individual study, creating an environment that supported concentration and consistent progress.

The learning experience was entirely one‑on‑one with one dedicated teacher, which made the program especially effective. The teacher was highly professional, knowledgeable, and very attentive to my individual learning needs. Lessons were fully personalized and well paced, allowing flexibility whenever adjustments were needed. The teacher was excellent at adapting teaching methods based on my progress, learning speed, and specific goals, ensuring that each class remained effective and engaging.

In addition to strong teaching skills, the teacher was also incredibly caring, and supportive. This created a very comfortable and motivating learning atmosphere. The teacher was always patient, encouraging, and genuinely invested in my progress, which made the learning process enjoyable and confidence‑building. This personal attention and warmth made a significant difference in my overall learning experience.

Living in Beijing was an enriching experience. The city offers a unique mix of traditional culture and modern life. Public transportation is efficient and convenient, making it easy to explore the city, enjoy local food, and experience daily life.

Amazing one week Keats experience!

I had a great experience during my one-week stay at Keats, where I took four hours of Chinese lessons each day. Even in such a short time, I learned a lot, which made the experience very rewarding and motivating.

My teacher, Ms. Du, was very kind and supportive. She adapted the lessons to my learning pace and needs, making everything clear and accessible even though I am not a fast learner. Her patience and encouragement made learning Chinese enjoyable. Besides the lessons, I also learned a lot about Chinese culture and we visited interesting places in Kunming, which also made it a very special experience!

Communication with Keats was very easy and well-organized. The airport pick-up and drop-off service was ideal and made arriving and leaving very smooth. The accommodation provided everything I needed and was comfortable for my stay. Also, there was a daily activity organized that students could sign up for, and I really enjoyed participating in these activities!

Also, Kunming is a beautiful and diverse city with the kindes people living there.
Overall, it was a very positive and memorable experience.
