Review

I want to thank the entire staff and teachers that I encountered during my online classes here! It was a truly pleasant experience to communicate with manager Julie and teacher Meng/孟老师. Apart from the coordination process, which includes finding a teacher, arranging classes and so on, the education itself is on a whole another level. I especially appreciate the attention the teacher gives to the student, whether it be always looking for the right materials, giving feedback or useful advice, helping the student achieve the desired goal, etc. If it’d be possible to rate studying Chinese here 10/10, I’d do it!

Highly recommended!

My journey as an exchange student from Frankfurt to Shanghai has been profoundly shaped by my time at That’s Mandarin, especially as I progressed from HSK 1 to HSK 3. When I first arrived, I was excited yet apprehensive about my language skills. Fortunately, That’s Mandarin provided a structured and supportive environment right from the start. Before the course began, they helped me create a specific timetable tailored to my needs. This personalized approach was instrumental in easing my transition into learning Mandarin.

One of the most valuable aspects of my experience was the initial evaluation of my speaking skills. The assessment was thorough, allowing us to pinpoint my strengths and areas for improvement. This thoughtful placement meant that I started at a level that was both challenging and attainable, which kept me engaged without feeling overwhelmed. The progression through HSK levels felt seamless, as the school continually adapted the curriculum to match my growing abilities.

The in-class experience at That’s Mandarin was not only educational but also incredibly fun. The teachers brought a lively energy to each session, employing various teaching methods that made learning engaging. From interactive games to cultural discussions, every class felt dynamic. The teachers provided individual feedback, ensuring that I understood each topic thoroughly. They took the time to address my questions and offered extra help when necessary, which made me feel supported in my learning journey.

Motivation was a crucial element throughout my studies. The teachers at That’s Mandarin were adept at fostering a positive atmosphere that encouraged me to push my limits. They consistently reminded me of the importance of practice and offered innovative learning mechanics that kept my enthusiasm high. Whether it was through multimedia resources, conversational practice, or cultural activities, I felt inspired to delve deeper into the language.

Moreover, the school organized various extracurricular activities, such as language exchange meetups and cultural outings, which enriched my experience. These events allowed me to apply what I learned in the classroom in real-life situations, reinforcing my skills and building my confidence. It was during these activities that I truly saw my language abilities flourish. Engaging with locals and fellow students gave me a sense of accomplishment and underscored the importance of practical application in language learning.

As I progressed to HSK 3, I noticed a significant improvement in my speaking and comprehension skills. The ultimate goal of becoming proficient in Mandarin felt increasingly within reach, thanks to the supportive framework that That’s Mandarin provided. Each lesson built on the last, creating a cohesive learning experience that made complex concepts more digestible.

In conclusion, my time at That’s Mandarin has been transformative. From the meticulous planning of my course to the engaging classroom environment, every aspect of my learning journey has contributed to my growth. I am grateful for the individual attention I received and the motivation instilled in me by my teachers. As I look ahead, I am excited to continue improving my Chinese skills, armed with the solid foundation and enthusiasm cultivated during my time in Shanghai.

Good experience

It’s not my first time learning Chinese in China. The school is nice, the teachers are really great. It also helps that there are 3 different teachers, so you get to experience different teaching methods. Plus, classrooms and the platform are really comfortable and convenient. The locations is good as well, it’s pretty convenient if you want to walk around the city after classes. Moreover, once in two weeks there’s an outside activity when you go out with the teacher to practice you Chinese skills in different situations based on the topics you’ve covered in class.

Absolutely excellent classes

Over the past decade I have been to many language schools and experience many different teachers. That's Mandarin is really the best and I have been impressed during my 4 weeks here. Here's three reasons why:
1) Methodology: Unlike other schools, TM has a fantastic online platform and modern curriculum which focuses on teaching words through relevant stories and conversations. That is 100% more effective than the traditional "learning words and grammar by heart from an textbook" method. I have never progressed as quickly,
2) Teaching quality: Teachers really take the time to understand your weaknesses and tailor classes to that. Also the school ensures you get different teachers, this way you can experience a variety of teaching methods which are complementary for maximum effectiveness. I really benefited from this. I have had especially good experiences with 卢Laoshi and 崔 Laoshi.
3) Logistics and Organisation: Each student has a dedicated course coordinator who ensures all logistical questions are solved. You also receive regular reports on your progress, with feedback from your teachers.

What would you improve about this program?
Perhaps just the housing options - it was great that they could organise housing but payment was difficult (it would be easier if we can pay the language school directly and not the landlord as a foreigner, as they have a foreign account and foreigners cannot easily transfer to local accounts) and also the type of apartment was more suitable for long-term living rather than a short term stay (1 month - no proper duvet, no towels, no kitchen equipment etc.)

  • Organisation
Cons
  • Housing Options

Fun and educational

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at That's Mandarin! Having multiple teachers added lots of variety and ensured that I had a more comprehensive learning experience. Each teacher's different style added something new and led to a fun classroom dynamic. Both during and after class there was time to socialise with the teachers as well, which helped to create an excellent studying environment. Especially Wang laoshi struck a good balance between having fun in the classroom and entertaining the students' antics, but still keeping order and do a great job at teaching us the grammar for that class.

Highly recommend!

Highly recommend it to those who want to learn REAL Chinese for daily life :)

What I’m learning in the classroom actually helps how to speak in circumstances with local people such as ordering food at a cafe or restaurant.

Textbooks are well-made based on everyday challenges as a foreigner in China and the nihaocafe platform helps to preview and review including pinyin, audios, videos, etc.

Also, teacher Mrs.Yang teaches Chinese language as well as Chinese culture. She responds and explains to my questions with a warm-hearted and positive character.

Moreover, that’s mandarin hosts some cultural events, so it’d be good opportunities for people who want to submerge in Chinese culture and mingle with global classmates.

Learning experience

As a result of Covid, my former Mandarin school sadly closed and I was left with the decision as to whether I continued my Mandarin study (I'd been learning for almost 3 years), or stop.. and am I glad I found a new school!
That's Mandarin helped me to seamlessly continue my studies with a curriculum that is engaging and relevant. My new teacher is fantastic (邱浩 10/10) - and ensures that each lesson is the perfect combination of challenge and humour,
Although i am sad that my original school closed, I also am grateful for having found That's Mandarin. A great learning journey!
