I had fun

This program was such a cool experience. I am so glad that I was able to have this opportunity. I was able to learn so much about equine through the program. I was also able to explore a whole new culture that I have never been around before. It was a little difficult at the start but i was able to get through it and ended up having an amazing time. I hope that I could participate in a program similar in the future. The staff was extremely kind as well as the other girls who joined me here and made me feel welcomed even as an introvert.

What would you improve about this program?
I would improve the information about what to bring. several girls including myself were told not to bring a helmet and ended up having to share.
Pros
  • cultural experience
  • vacation
  • lots of learning opportunities
Cons
  • the shower
  • no air conditioning
  • cold

I had a great month in Scotland!

I had the greatest time studying equine anatomy and fitness at Scotland’s Rural College this past month. The program was well planned, organized, and properly executed. My favorite part was getting to ride multiple times a week at the Scottish National Equestrian Centre. It was helpful to be able to practice our anatomy lessons on horses before and after our rides as well. There was plenty of time built into the program to travel and explore Edinburgh and surrounding cities which I appreciated!

I had a great time!

My month-long equine study abroad in Scotland was an incredible experience that blended classroom learning with cultural exploration. We studied equine anatomy, physiology, and fitness in a hands-on, engaging way while surrounded by stunning Scottish landscapes. Highlights included visiting the iconic Kelpies and attending the Royal Highland Show, where we saw Scottish agriculture and horse culture up close. I gained a deeper understanding of the global equine industry and connected with classmates who shared my passion. This program gave me a fresh perspective on my studies and memories I’ll always cherish. I highly recommend it to any animal science student.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Say yes to everything you can! Take every opportunity—whether it's a group outing or a spontaneous adventure. This experience goes by fast, so soak it all in and make as many memories as possible. Be open-minded, even if you're tired (and yes, you will be tired!). The long days are worth it, and some of the best moments happen outside the classroom. Have fun, stay curious, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.

I had the time of my life!

I came to Scotland with little to none riding experience. I was nervous to come with no experience, but they were very understanding and accommodating to my needs. They were amazing teachers, teaching me the basics of riding. They were constantly making sure I was comfortable and never made me do something that I was uncomfortable with. By the end of the program I was much more comfortable with riding and the overall experience was very beneficial to my learning. I was able to become more comfortable around horses and learn more about them.

My Honest Review of my Time in Seville

As my time in Spain is quickly coming to an end, it has made me reflect on my time abroad and appreciate all the memories I have made. For some context, I am doing a computer science internship in Seville, Spain, from January to May. When I first came out, I took 2 weeks of Spanish classes, which were fantastic. These classes quickly helped me make some friends and get used to living in Spain. After these classes, I started my internship at PCPaco, which was a fantastic experience. It was exactly the role I wanted for my career, teaching me tons. They also helped me explore more of the city and learn about all the holidays. I think that my favorite part of Seville is the people. Everyone I have met out at clubs and in general has been extremely friendly and patient. Admittedly, my Spanish was not amazing starting out, but everyone was patient with me and quickly helped me learn. I also have never felt so safe in a city this big. Walking home from clubs, the streets are always lit, and I never felt unsafe. Overall, 10/10 experience, and I definitely would recommend it to anyone wanting the experience of living abroad.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I could change one thing, it would be to start traveling around Europe earlier. My 5 months here have flown by, and I wish I had visited other cities sooner. That being said, I still was able to visit London, Paris, Madrid, Rome, and many other smaller cities in Andalusia.
Pros
  • So much Fun!
  • Experienced new culture
  • Everything in Seville is so cheap
Cons
  • It got so hot in the summer
  • Far away from home
  • Time flies by :(

The Ups and Downs of Seville

To begin, I really enjoyed my time in Seville and I don't regret this experience. That being said, there were of course positives and negatives that others should be aware of. Starting with the good, Seville is a beautiful city with great nightlife and many sights to see. The people that I worked with from my marketing internship at the partner school, Spanish Institute for Global Education, were friendly and I always felt I could ask them any questions. I created lots of content for the social media, designed various promotional materials, and gained experience of what it's like to work in marketing. I also was able to travel on excursions with the school and had time to explore around Europe on my own. Now for the negative, my first internship I was contracted to pulled out once I was already in Spain. I ended up doing social media marketing for the school, so I did not experience the Spanish immersion that I had hoped for. I lived in an apartment with other English speakers, and my internship only had me come in two to three days of the week. I made friends with the students at the school, but they were all English speakers as well, and I didn't know how to meet Spaniards my age to help me be immersed. I would recommend staying with a host family so you have to speak in Spanish. With the housing, the apartment was generally nice, but my room had no window to the outside, it opened to the laundry room. There was also a smell of mildew from the bathroom that would never go away. It was just bad luck of where I was placed. I still appreciate the knowledge I gained here and the experience of living among a different culture.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-racking moment for me was when I had to go to the doctor, twice. I was sick on and off for most of the time I was in Seville. It was very intimidating to have to talk to a doctor completely in Spanish. Before I went in, I wrote out my symptoms and what I had experienced so I could be more clear to them. They were very accommodating both times.
Pros
  • The city of Seville
  • Job experience I gained from the internship
  • Traveling around Spain and Europe
Cons
  • Lack of Spanish immersion
  • Original internship was not what I ended up doing
  • The apartment I was placed in
Response from Adelante Abroad

Hello Abby,
Thank you for taking the time to write this review. It is so great to hear that you really enjoyed your time in Seville and that you gained marketing experience while being able to explore both Spain and Europe. With all the experience from your internship program, you will drastically be able to update your resume. We heard nothing but positive feedback from your supervisor and the directors abroad from your contributions during your internship. The Letter of Recommendation that you received will go a long way when applying to jobs in the future. As for your change of internship, this happens very rarely. Sometimes the initial company that a candidates is paired with cancels last minute and the only thing we can do is find a replacement internship, in your same field, as soon as possible, which we were able to do (and with another great company)! Please know that when a company cancels last-minute, we remove them from our placement roster moving forward to help prevent this from happening again. Regarding housing, you knew that you would be living with other Adelante Abroad candidates and we always have the homestay option available for applicants. We do say that the homestay option is the best if your goal is to fully immerse yourself in the Spanish culture. We encourage participants to let us know about any housing concerns during the program so that we can try to address them in real time. We were unaware of any issues with housing as this was not brought up to us until now. If this was brought up while you were abroad, we would have been able to address the concern while you were there. We truly value your feedback and are glad that, overall, you appreciated the experience and personal growth that came from living abroad.
Warm regards,

My time in Madrid

I enjoyed my time in Madrid tremendously. The food, weather, culture, language, architecture, was all amazing. I learned so much about myself and the world around me. I got to spend a lot of time alone and it gave me a lot of perspective! I highly recommend choosing Madrid to do an internship, after four months of staying there and also traveling around to other cities in Europe, Madrid was by far the best. It was a great way to immerse myself in an unfamiliar place like I did. It was far out of my comfort zone, but well worth it.
