Scotland is so fun and fresh. I will absolutely be coming back to this beautiful country to see what I could not in the time we were here. Although it was a 4 week program, we were very limited on the exploring we could do because we did not get out of class until 4 most days and everything in Scotland closes at 6pm. Edinburgh is a great city and has lots of opportunities for things to look at. I would bring more layers and prepare for all the weather options possible. We went to Edinburgh lots of times and had a different experience at each. The people love Americans and our funny little accents, and we love when they say lassie. There are a lot of fun things to do and lots of walking opportunities. Exercising while walking to the Royal Mile, and I don't think I will ever get used to the stairs.

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moment was when I got a tattoo in a foreign country lol. So girly pop slay. Totally gonna tell the kids and grand-kids about that one.
Pros
  • Awesome culture
  • Dope food
  • Great castles and sights to see
Cons
  • not enough alcohol in their drinks
  • public transportation is super expensive
  • not enough travel time

Adventures in Scotland

I had a great experience in Scotland! I loved the coursework and the riding lessons and had lots of opportunity to explore the country! We went up to explore Edinburgh, Inverness, Loche Ness, and a small town called Corran in our free time! It was all very scenic and fun! Definitely worth it! I loved the riding lessons which helped build my skills, my strength, and my confidence! The coursework was manageable and quite interesting for someone with some equine experience. I overall am very glad I attended!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
In Edinburgh, I tried Indian food for the first time!
Pros
  • Riding lessons at least twice a week
  • Free time to explore independently
  • Advice and guidance from staff
Cons
  • Food was not a strong point

A Great Month In Scotland

I had a fantastic time in Scotland for my study abroad at Scotland's Rural College! I learned so much in my anatomy and physiology class and equine fitness and saw lots of sightseeing! I wish we had more free days for sightseeing, but classes come first, which is understandable since we are here for class credits! One month was a good length for classes, but I wish I could stay longer for sightseeing! Also, being able to ride and have lessons riding SRUC's horses during the four weeks was amazing!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Haggis
Pros
  • independence
  • Study in a new environment
  • Have fun while learning!
Cons
  • Far away from the main citys
  • not a lot of pre planned activities
  • short dinner hours

It was a great Scotland Experience!

I'm a veterinary technology student and this was a great experience. I wanted to widen my knowledge on horse's as a whole and thats exactly what I did. Through riding and academics this program helped me become more comfortable around horses and with the medical terminology surrounding horse care. I would definitely prepare for all weather conditions including cold winds and rains even though it is "summer". The campus is very pretty and around a 20 minute train ride from Edinburgh. The city has many sites to see and plenty of places to spend your money!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Not something I ate, but something I drank. Irn Bru is a very popular soda drink here. It has a very strange taste, but I would recommend anyone new to the area to try it for themselves.
Pros
  • Friends
  • Travel Experience
Cons
  • lack of food around campus
  • lack of service around campus

Yay Scotland

We got to see a lot of the important landmarks in Scotland via the school, but it is also fun to go off on your own to explore cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow, there are a lot of hidden gems but you have to look for them. After a while, you get comfortable using the trains and taxi services to get to places and it just becomes part of your day. Scottish people are also friendly and interested in American culture so they are very friendly and ask many questions about politics and the States as well as where to go in America.

What was your funniest moment?
getting a tattoo in a foreign country as someone who has none.
Pros
  • the people
  • the city
  • ease of getting places
Cons
  • taxi cost
  • the food
  • the train times

Carly's Experience

Overall, once we got here and got everything figured out it was great. Would have appreciated some public transportation information prior to coming here and communication about what gear we actually needed, but we managed. Showering was awful, but other than that the accommodations were fine. Food was rough, but it's a cafeteria so I expected that. The class was way too easy for the suggested material to cover beforehand.

Wonderful Time

I enjoyed the coursework and the teachers. The riding was informative and was a new experience to see how the riding differed. I would have wanted some additional support from Adelante earlier. Things like what school supplies to bring, what will be provided in Scotland (like bedding and towels), and having accurate information (the riding information was slightly wrong). In general, it was a wonderful trip. However, there was not a lot of support from Adelante or information provided. For example, a lot of the travel links they sent us were outdated (as in they did not even exist anymore) and they were sent to us at the conclusion of our trip.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
different packing information

Go Abroad!

Scotland was an amazing experience! Trying new things and being in a new culture was great and I would recommend everyone go abroad. I grew and changed in so many ways during my time in Scotland and I will take that experience with me throughout my life. The staff at SRUC Elmwood where I studied were extremely professional and helpful. They did their best to make sure we had what we needed and were enjoying our stay at all times. If you are a golf fanatic this is the trip for you. Crossing the Swilcan bridge on 18 is one of the best feeling in golf!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Haggis was surprisingly good. Get a haggis roll!
Pros
  • Living in a new culture
  • Gaining travel experience
  • University Staff
Cons
  • Can get expensive
  • Some details were misrepresented

Adelante: Scotland Golf

This program is a great way to play and study golf in the home of golf. The facilities are nice, teaching staff is wonderful, and the courses are breath taking. SRUC Elmwood has done a great job in customizing the trip to our interest and helping us hit all of our main goals on our bucket list. While the social scene and golf was great there was a large lack of communication from the Adelante side. The itinerary provided was incorrect and there were multiple false promises that initially sold the program for me. It was a disappoint to start the program and learn how expensive this trip would be when I was originally informed that most of the cost I was concerned about would be covered in the fees I paid for the program.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I signed up for this program alone without any friends from school and I was genuinely terrified. Now that the program is over I can say it was one of the best decisions of my life. I have made friends that will last a lifetime and some I would even call family. Having an open mind when traveling abroad is super important otherwise you will miss out on moments you would never dream of.
Pros
  • Great location
  • Cool restaurants/ social scene
  • Cool Golf
Cons
  • EXPENSIVE
  • Lack of communication
  • Unorganized

Fun time!

Great program with fun golf. We had some awesome site visits for learning golf history, and we also met the GM at Dumbarnie who went over a bit of golf management with us. Front end Adelante group says misleading things about the program itself like 'Included golf during weekdays,' 'coaching at St Andrews or Gleneagles' (we coached at Elmwood GC), and the itinerary given for the month wasn't followed. The SRUC staff were fantastic but Adelante needs to improve upon their end of the program. Overall it was a fun program, just a bit frustrating because my expectations were so high based off the conversations I had with the Adelante team.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I didn't think haggis was going to be good but the pork and haggis roll at the old course halfway house was pretty good.
Pros
  • Golf at nicest courses in the world
  • Incredible education on coaching
  • Improve your golf game
Cons
  • Misleading front end conversations
  • Doesn't follow Itinerary
  • Expensive after the program fees to pay for golf in scotland
