Had so much fun

i loved this program! the schedule wasnt too full so we had time to do our own things, but they had scheduled events that were amazing! the staff were super helpful and nice, and i would definitely come again. i loved scotland as well and would recommend this specific program for anyone who is interested in equines! the classes weren’t too hard but were great for giving helpful information about horses, and even though i’ve been around them my entire life i learned so much more than i thought i would.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
take every day as it comes! it goes by super fast, but you do have so much time so dont worry if you dont get to do the thing you want on a specific day as youll likely have time for it another day. this program is amazing for letting the students go off on their own, and i definitely recommend taking all the time you can to travel!
Pros
  • housing and amenities
  • staff
  • the animals
Cons
  • some girls
  • the time change
  • not wanting to go home (lol)

This was a great experience!

I was super nervous about going alone, but I made great friends! There was a larger travel distance into Edinburgh than initially stated, but it was not that bad if you went with multiple people. I do recommended carrying a rain jacket with you wherever you go, because you never know when it is going to rain. There was so many cool things to do in Edinburgh for free that were very interesting and exciting! There was also plenty of great views everywhere we went! the royal mile is also so big with a lot of adorable shops and things to do!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be prepared to pay a lot for traveling from place to place. Taxi's are the main way to get into town and it adds up pretty quickly.
Pros
  • A lot of fun!
  • Multiple things to do!
  • Lots of beautiful sights!
Cons
  • 30 minute car ride to Edinburgh.
  • Weather constantly changes
  • The water heater is temperamental.

Amazing Experience

This was a wonderful experience for it being my first time abroad. The instructors and the locals were all very nice and helpful. The classes were interesting and it was a lot of information, but it was given to us in a way that was easy to pick up. The scenery was amazing, and even with class we were able to go and see so much. Learning to ride horses was a lot and fun. I had no previous experience riding, but was able to learn a lot in a month. Overall, this was a one of a kind experience and I would recommend it to anyone.

What was your funniest moment?
I beat a Scottish man at arm wrestling in a pub. I actually beat him three times.
Pros
  • Got to see a lot of places
  • Made a lot of friends
  • Had a trip of a lifetime
Cons
  • It was pretty chilly and rainy
  • The rooms were a little cold and hot
  • The food was very difficult to get used to

My Time in Scotland

My time in Edinburgh was very fun and educational. SRUC gives you lots of freedom to explore the town and gain independence. This was also an amazing opportunity to meet new people and create new memories with girls who have similar hobbies and interests with horses. I feel like I did learn a lot through the anatomy/physiology and fitness courses and the courses were well taught. The riding was very helpful as well and I do feel like i have improved within the last four weeks. I feel more confident in my riding and equine knowledge,.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If i did this again i would have packed more rainy clothes considering it is chilly and rains often.
Pros
  • Good living situation
  • meeting new people
  • new cultural expierence
Cons
  • school food is not the best
  • lack of bed comfort

Amazing time!

I would highly recommend this program. The classes were amazing and provided me with new information. I really liked the structure of the classes. There was a lot of hands on learning, which I think was beneficial to my overall learning. The campus is located in an amazing spot, it is close to walk to the train station (about an hour walk), there are many hiking trails, and a great town area. The horses are very nice and teach you a lot. The people in Scotland are all very nice, if you need help finding your way ask for help everyone is willing to help.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I would recommend to go with the flow. As someone that likes to know the plan, this was hard. But things dont go as plan and it is more enjoyable when you can relax.
Pros
  • New friends
  • Amazing instructors
  • Great activities
Cons
  • food
  • spent a lot of money on transportation
  • leaving

Fab

Scotland is so fun and fresh. I will absolutely be coming back to this beautiful country to see what I could not in the time we were here. Although it was a 4 week program, we were very limited on the exploring we could do because we did not get out of class until 4 most days and everything in Scotland closes at 6pm. Edinburgh is a great city and has lots of opportunities for things to look at. I would bring more layers and prepare for all the weather options possible. We went to Edinburgh lots of times and had a different experience at each. The people love Americans and our funny little accents, and we love when they say lassie. There are a lot of fun things to do and lots of walking opportunities. Exercising while walking to the Royal Mile, and I don't think I will ever get used to the stairs.

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moment was when I got a tattoo in a foreign country lol. So girly pop slay. Totally gonna tell the kids and grand-kids about that one.
Pros
  • Awesome culture
  • Dope food
  • Great castles and sights to see
Cons
  • not enough alcohol in their drinks
  • public transportation is super expensive
  • not enough travel time

Adventures in Scotland

I had a great experience in Scotland! I loved the coursework and the riding lessons and had lots of opportunity to explore the country! We went up to explore Edinburgh, Inverness, Loche Ness, and a small town called Corran in our free time! It was all very scenic and fun! Definitely worth it! I loved the riding lessons which helped build my skills, my strength, and my confidence! The coursework was manageable and quite interesting for someone with some equine experience. I overall am very glad I attended!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
In Edinburgh, I tried Indian food for the first time!
Pros
  • Riding lessons at least twice a week
  • Free time to explore independently
  • Advice and guidance from staff
Cons
  • Food was not a strong point

A Great Month In Scotland

I had a fantastic time in Scotland for my study abroad at Scotland's Rural College! I learned so much in my anatomy and physiology class and equine fitness and saw lots of sightseeing! I wish we had more free days for sightseeing, but classes come first, which is understandable since we are here for class credits! One month was a good length for classes, but I wish I could stay longer for sightseeing! Also, being able to ride and have lessons riding SRUC's horses during the four weeks was amazing!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Haggis
Pros
  • independence
  • Study in a new environment
  • Have fun while learning!
Cons
  • Far away from the main citys
  • not a lot of pre planned activities
  • short dinner hours

It was a great Scotland Experience!

I'm a veterinary technology student and this was a great experience. I wanted to widen my knowledge on horse's as a whole and thats exactly what I did. Through riding and academics this program helped me become more comfortable around horses and with the medical terminology surrounding horse care. I would definitely prepare for all weather conditions including cold winds and rains even though it is "summer". The campus is very pretty and around a 20 minute train ride from Edinburgh. The city has many sites to see and plenty of places to spend your money!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Not something I ate, but something I drank. Irn Bru is a very popular soda drink here. It has a very strange taste, but I would recommend anyone new to the area to try it for themselves.
Pros
  • Friends
  • Travel Experience
Cons
  • lack of food around campus
  • lack of service around campus

Yay Scotland

We got to see a lot of the important landmarks in Scotland via the school, but it is also fun to go off on your own to explore cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow, there are a lot of hidden gems but you have to look for them. After a while, you get comfortable using the trains and taxi services to get to places and it just becomes part of your day. Scottish people are also friendly and interested in American culture so they are very friendly and ask many questions about politics and the States as well as where to go in America.

What was your funniest moment?
getting a tattoo in a foreign country as someone who has none.
Pros
  • the people
  • the city
  • ease of getting places
Cons
  • taxi cost
  • the food
  • the train times
