A once in a lifetime experience

Teaching English in Thailand has been the most challenging and rewarding experience for me. I'm typing this review as I sit in my thai classroom watching music videos with my students on the last day of classes! I highly recommend this program to anyone who has a passion for adventure, travel, children, and being out of their comfort zone. I completed the TESOL course here in Thailand and met life long friends. In fact, four of us are backpacking Vietnam and Cambodia after we finish teaching! During the placement process, I was told I would be teaching 16-18 year olds (I am 22). I came into this experience assuming I would be teaching younger kids, so this was scary news at first. Now that I have been teaching them for 4 months, I wouldn't trade it for the world. Watching my seniors graduate was so special for me. I did something I never thought I'd be able to do and I couldn't have done it without Greenheart Travel.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Out of all of the different food I came across in Thailand, the most unfamiliar thing I ate was either a chicken heart on a stick or a flattened, dried squid!

I love Greenheart!

I am so lucky to of traveled with Greenheart. They were extremely supportive through the entire process even when there was bumps in the road. They figured it all out. My family hosted an exchange student with a different company who were difficult and our family really struggled. That's why we were so iffy about sending me on an exchange year. Although, Greenheart has completely restored our faith in exchange!
If you and your family and worried about starting the process or even just have questions about exchange, Greenheart are your people. Even in you don't want to call, their website is beautiful and informative, and their staff are quick to respond and helpful in every way. An exchange will change your life, so put your trust in Greenheart to support you and your family.

This company was incredibly helpful

Greenheart travel works with you from the visa preparation up until you're ready for your next adventure. They are very quick with replying to any concerns or questions you have about your program, accommodation, pay etc. I felt Greenheart always have an answer that was honest and accurate. Sarah, my program coordinator was very helpful and patient with me when I would e-mail her frequently with questions. They keep you in the loop with what is going on in their company as well as events and opportunities for Greenheart alumni. I always recommend Greenheart to friends and strangers when they are looking for an adventure similar to mine! I am so lucky to have gone through this company and experiened the year & a half away in Thailand that I did! I will forever cherish that experience.

Wonderful experience!

I did the TESOL course in Hua Hin. What I expected to be just a step before starting teaching was a surprisingly amazing experience. The atmosphere it's just great, in only one week every one participating in the program become friends. The teachers and the stuff were also great, showing us around and helping us orginize extra excursions on the weekends.
I totally recommend doing the TESOL in Thailand instead of online.
After one amazing month, we were send to our placements. My school is a private one and it's great. I asked to be in the South teaching highschool but I am North teaching Highschools, but it is obvious that they cannot give everyone the perfect conditions, you have to accept that and you will fall in love with your place.

What would you improve about this program?
There were some missed information between XploreAsia and Green Heart, for example, Green Heart told me that I could teach wearing trousers but when I got to Thailand XploreAsia told me that most schools don't allow women to wear anything but skirts and dresses so I had to buy them here. It's not a big deal but I could have bring another kind of clothes.

Don't overlook Myanmar! Absolutely amazing

I wasn't originally planning to go to Myanmar but I could not have been happier that I did. Myanmar is a truly special country that will always have a special place in my heart. Greenheart supported me throughout the beginning of the process and made me feel comfortable traveling to a country I didn't know much about. It was also great to have a job and an apartment ready for me when I arrived. As Myanmar was a less popular destination at the time, we had a smaller TESOL group but I really enjoyed this. I made lifelong friends through the Greenheart program and throughout my time in Myanmar. I loved being able to travel around the country, connect with my students and other travelers, and really feel like I was part of a local community. Myanmar is so special and I encourage everyone to travel there!!

What would you improve about this program?
The partner program Greenheart works with in Myanmar was not as supportive as Greenheart itself. I found some of the employees rude and dismissive. Luckily they weren't involved in our daily work after the TESOL course.

My great experience

I am with Green heart organization right now since I am an exchange student in US and so glad for everything they provided to me. To improve my English I went to Language program which is provided by Green heart. And that was amazing. Local coordinators took us to so many cool places. They even took us to Boston, Massachusetts. All employees in green heart are super nice people. They found for me such a great placement to live and they always have lots of opportunities to win something or win a place to go! I am highly recommended it to everyone!!! And you I am not paying anything for this program. Everything what they did for me and doing for me is free. Before when I came to my place ment to live me and my friend form the same program stocked at the airport because of the weather and green heart employees helped us with money and everything. It was so nice. They are easy to find a common thing.

A Great Opportunity to Leave an Impact

As a first-time ESL teacher, I found my experience in Costa Rica to be a great opportunity to learn about teaching English with lots of external support, as well as gain experience in the field. The program gives you the curriculum to work with, so there is no lesson planning necessary. While the lesson is already planned, there was still plenty of planning and prepping materials to do. With 6 hours of teaching a day (with breaks throughout), 4 days a week, the schedule is overwhelming at times (especially as a new teacher), but I learned to adjust to the workload.

The program is very new; however, the organization offers lots of support in terms of orientation, materials, and housing. A lot of those tasks and processes that would have been difficult otherwise were much easier with their help. All I had to worry about was teaching my students. Orientation was informative and practical, especially for a first-time teacher. The lesson plans were well laid out, but also offered the freedom (and encouragement) to personalize them by adding in new, fun activities or adjusting activities to fit the needs of the students.

The only aspect of the program that I felt did not fit the description was the promise of having a bilingual on-site coordinator. There was not an on-site coordinator and my social worker spoke almost no English which sometimes left myself and my fellow teachers feeling left out of the loop in terms of what was happening in the school building or with our students. The support from San Jose was helpful, but they could not offer the same kind of support that an on-site coordinator would be able to give to us. Also, while I was fortunate enough to be placed with 2 other volunteers in my location, I know others were not. It is a great idea to have 2 or more volunteers in each location, but it needs to be honestly advertised if there is a chance that you could be placed at a site alone.

My host family was absolutely wonderful. My host mom made delicious food, did laundry, and kept the house quite clean. My family did not hesitate to invite me on trips to new paces, to parties with their family, and to events in town. I enjoyed getting to practice my Spanish at the dinner table. That being said, I had somewhere between a beginner and intermediate level of Spanish before I got to Costa Rica and I still struggled to communicate for the first month. My host parents spoke no English, and it is very difficult to practice your Spanish when you have to speak English for 8 hours a day. My host mom did her best to speak slowly and deliberately with me to help me learn, but I was often left feeling like I couldn't have conversations that were as meaningful as I would have liked them to be. Knowing at least a beginner level of Spanish before coming into this program is must. Overall, I loved learning more about the culture by staying with a local family, and loved being able to share my culture with them as well. My host family helped make my experience an unforgettable one.

Aside from all of the technical aspects, I truly enjoyed my time working with the students in Costa Rica. I got to work with young adults (age 18-30) who were passionate and enthusiastic about learning the English language. These students are receiving the opportunity to learn English from the government for future employment, and it was amazing to be even a small part of that mission. I got to watch my students grow so much over the 4 months I was in Costa Rica. I felt like I learned just as much as the students did. These students, and this organization, gave me a life-changing experience that I will never forget.

Best Experience of my Life!

The decision to teach abroad is so empowering! The love from the students is validating and the ability to prove to yourself that you can leave everything familiar and comfortable to you and still overcome all challenges is the cherry on the cake. Adjusting to a big move like this is never easy, but I am so thankful to have gone through Greenheart Travel because they were incredibly supportive during those hard times. Everyone is genuinely there to help and support you through this journey because they KNOW what it's like to be in your shoes as they've all experienced the same endeavor. I think that is very important and key contributing factor to what makes them so amazing! I highly recommend taking on an adventure like this through Greenheart Travel! <3

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
If you choose to be in a more remote area, be prepared not to meet many foreigners that you can relate to and use that opportunity to really delve into the culture. If you're shy like me, allow this opportunity to help you get out of your shell. Otherwise you WILL miss out on amazing experiences and adventures. It's okay to be uncomfortable sometimes. That's how we grow.

Definitely would go again but...

I would definitely would go again. However, they failed to take me on the excursion just because I was the only one that volunteered that week. Although there was barely any one that spoke English, I had a good experience. I loved my host family. Everyone I met seemed really nice and taught me a lot. I would recommend knowing how to speak Spanish fluently in order to go on this trip. I would also like to say this was my first time going abroad by myself and I was 14 years old. I could of used some more people that spoke English.

What would you improve about this program?
Make sure they include everything you are paying for.

TESOL in Hua Hin

I went through Greenheart Travel's TESOL course in Thailand in December 2018 to January 2019. The course was in Hua Hin, Thailand. This part of Thailand has plenty of adventure activities to do on the weekend such as waterfalls, temple caves, and elephant sanctuaries. However, this location is a town for foreign westerners looking for a beach town in good relation to Bangkok and southern islands. So western accommodations were available, but it is not authentic Thailand. With that being said the TESOL course prepares you for what teaching in authentic Thailand is like. This is an intensive and amazing course that could prepare you for teaching in any Asian country. I highly recommend getting your TESOL if you want to earn money while traveling and I suggest doing it through Greenheart Travel in person at one of their locations.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing I did was on a free weekend our group decided to go on a weekend excursion to the local waterfalls. We were able to go at our own pace as there was only one path and five different waterfalls to check out. I was able to stay in the back and found a group of local Thai people in which they taught me the right spot to jump off into the waterfall. They also taught me how to swim with the catfish in the waters.
