Shanghai Fall 2019 Review

Super fun! Building is really nice! I don’t like cash anymore because of China. Get Alipay, get Yi Dian Dian. Drink boba everyday, it’s cheap. Eat chipotle before going, they don’t have it there. Take Professor Raymond Ro’s classes, he’s the best professor I’ve ever ever had. Take Marketing, take Management and organizations! Go to Puxi on the weekends for brunch or for night life. School’s super close to Lujiazui so there’s a lot of things to do after school. Go to IFC Mall, go see the pearl tower and the tallest bookstore

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
SET UP A BANK ACCOUNT. EVERYTHING IS ON YOUR PHONE. EVEN MONEY.

Shanghai Review

Super fun! I loved being in Shanghai and meeting different people. The people were pretty friendly and the efficiency in the city was unbelievable. I could go out the dorm without cash or my wallet. Everything I needed was on my phone. It lessened my traveling weight, plus it was so easy to book high-speed train tickets and plane tickets. I could travel to close-by provinces within 3 hrs and come back within the day. It was awesome. I loved yellow mountain and Beijing. Both were different experiences but very enjoyable.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Setting up the bank account beforehand, setting up wechat!

Shanghai Review

Shanghai is an amazing city to travel and study in. I went as a student, but I had the chance to travel on the weeek ends to near cities and water towns. Personally, I visited Wuxi where my family is from. In shanghai, getting around is super easy. We travel by bus, bikes, metros, cabs, and Chinese Uber. All of these are really cheap. In terms of food, you can get really good food for not a lot of money. You could order food from a delivery app called Eleme. I love shanghai, I recommend it for anybody.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Accessibility of travelling
The metro station is extremely easy to use, public biking is really cheap. Chinese Uber is easy to use for foreigners and extremely cheap

Had a blast!

Definetly recommend you go to Shanghai! Theres so much to explore and see, and so much culture. I went to Suzhou, Beijing, Guilin, and much more.
The food is very good. Theres definetly less options for those with dietary restrictions but they have so many cuisines.
The school was very good. It definetly felt like a school and the community was very nice. The teachers were very helpful.
I would definetly reccommend you go to Shanghai. Great people, great food, great culture, and great experience.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would travel more and eat more good food and meet more people.

Big Fun

We had a lot of free trips and activities so that everyone could explore France and Paris and make memories, even if not all of us had the means to. We went to operas, ballets, plays, had dinners, and many other activities. Even if some had strict budgets or were worried about how expensive Paris could be, there were always free trips and activities available all the time (at least two a week) to reap the benefits of this fantastic city and country. The professors were also great and encouraged us to explore the city, suggesting restaurants or museums we should see. They were also great at incorporating this wonderful, exciting city into their programs, so we'd often be outside exploring a part of town, drinking coffee, or we'd be at a museum, studying art. Overall, the people there truly wanted us to get the most out of our time at Paris and we had plenty of opportunities to have big fun.

Why visit Prague

Prague is an exciting city filled with history, which made it fun to learn while studying abroad there! What first attracted me to study abroad in Prague was its historic baroque architecture and central location in Europe. It was so simple and cheap to travel around the Czech Republic and to the neighboring countries around. Once I got there, I got to adventure around many of Prague's diverse neighborhoods that were home to must-see sights like the Prague Castle, the Astronomical Clock in Old Town Square (where NYU Prague campus is located) and my personal favorite the Metronome that overlooked the whole city from Letenske Schody. Prague is home to many world-famous museums, poets, and artists. The Czech food was delicious, however they were not fans of eating vegetables or drinking water as much as I'm used to in the U.S. This is an experience I will never forget and will talk about for years to come.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing I did was when NYU took us two hours out to Jachymov to meet with a former Political Prisoner. We visited the mines he worked in and his wife baked us three traditional desserts from how excited she was that we were sharing our time to listen to her husbands story. My class, Collective Identity in a Totalitarian Regime, spoke about the Czech history only two days prior and then we got to witness and speak to someone who actually went through what we learned about. Our tour guide even shared a special coffee that the political prisoners would drink during their imprisonment so that we could really imagine what they went through. This is something I would have never done if it weren't for the free events NYU provides.

Paris for a Year

I have been here for a semester already and overall it is what you would expect. The city of Paris will grow on you and unsurprisingly, I am in love now. The classes that are offered here in general are easier than they are on the Washington Square campus but if you want to push yourself, you can take them in French.
The greatest value that I have gotten from being in Paris thus far is the exposure I have had to art here. "High culture" art it present everywhere here in a way that I don't find even in New York. Galleries are more accessible, the theatre, cinema, there is a more classic feeling that is novel for the typical American study-abroader.

Just Okay

I enjoyed the friends I made, and I thought that it was very easy to travel from Prague, with transportation to the airport easy and cheap and flights from Prague relatively inexpensive, but overall, I don’t think I would study abroad here again. The faculty has great credentials, but are not very good at teaching, and I, as well as my peers, often felt frustrated. The social scene was so-so, and I found it to be better at other abroad locations, such as Madrid.

Go to Florence, you won't regret it!

I really enjoyed studying away in Florence. I completed a minor in European Culture and Society, took part in NYU Florence's EU in Focus program that traveled to Brussels, and engaged in local community by volunteering in a local museum. I've been learning Italian for a while and the semester really improved my Italian. I enjoyed my classes over there; the topics were interesting and the professors were very helpful and approachable.
The program is of great value. Every student can attend up to three all expense paid day trips to Italian cities outside Florence, not to mention the events with free food and class field trips. You get easy access to all the amazing cities in Europe for spring / fall breaks or simply long weekends.

An experience to remember

As a public health student, the Accra program really gave you a lot of options both academic wise and through internship placements that you can't get at a lot of other sites. However, you don't need to be just a public health major. The Accra site has an amazing range of courses to choose from with professors who are the best in their fields in Ghana. Outside of the classroom, Accra is an incredible city where you can find endless adventure. Whether you love the arts, music, nightlife, food, the list goes on, you can find it in Accra. And if you love to travel and explore, there's eco spots throughout the country that you can get to by bus (just make sure to get the proper directions from the staff first). If you want to really get out of your comfort zone and try something you may not have before, Accra is a great place to do that! The program is very small so you'll become close friends with your fellow students, but I would encourage anyone thinking about going to Accra to be willingly to branch out. Take a class at the University of Ghana, go out into the city, find a local spot that you love and make friends there too! The Accra site is a great program overall and it's set in an amazing place with amazing people who will stay in your heart forever.

What would you improve about this program?
In terms of improvements, one of the few recommendations I would have is the group trips. We didn't get to see many of the nature sites like the Wli Falls that a lot of students were excited to visit. I know it can be difficult to organize more trips the larger the program gets, but if the staff could help students plan smaller trips throughout the semester whether it's to festivals or art galleries or whatnot, I think it could add a lot to the program.
