Switzerland/Chinese Chef now

I came from Switzerland and honestly living with a Chinese family that I’d never met made me worried at first, but as soon as i showed up the family was really welcoming, and always smiling. i went to the Beijing Language and Culture University, which made me feel like i am at the united nations and people everywhere packed into one campus. morning all about the classes, and then city tours, university exploring and so many others. i loved cooking with my host family which made me feel like i was a Chinese chef now. thanks to Go Abroad China for the experience.

Think of going there as Arab

As someone working in the Egypt logistics, i knew China's manufacturing would be fascinating, but nothing could prepare me for real thing. Go Abroad China placed me in a trading company in Shenzhen that exports electronics to Europe and Middle East, but coming from Cairo i was really worried about the language and the culture and getting adapted to the workplace, but from very first day the team was helpful and welcoming. my colleagues took me to the Dongguan, explained supplier relations and let me sit in actual meetings and negotiate with Chinese vendors, weekend tours and the Chinese classes by the Go Abroad China was also helpful.

What was your funniest moment?
i think the funny thing is that sometimes the accent slips
Pros
  • visa and placing support
  • fast support, clear communication
  • city exploring

GAC program in China

After uni, I took a gap year and jumped into the GAC's program in China and seriously it made a huge difference in my career, life and everything. I had few online internships while I was a university student and then after graduation I thought of doing something real. I split my days in the gap to internship, Mandarin classes and city exploring. I loved the group city exploring which I saw many places even the great wall of China (honestly it's really big and wider than we see😀) thank you for the experience.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
getting lost in Shanghai in my second week of the gap program, honestly i didn't remember the apartment address in Chinese and my phone was also dead, so after an hour of just strange looking i finally found a cafe where i charged my phone and called GAC support. Haha the girl laughed and still came for support haha omg 😁
Pros
  • good housing
  • fast support from team
  • yummy food

As an engineer, I loved it

As an energy engineer from Norway, I really needed a career break to explore China's renewable energy and as from my perspective the GAC's career launch internship program helped a lot. I landed my internship at a solar technology company in Shanghai where I worked on efficiency testing and overseas projects. With technical background, I was curious about how the tech and innovation in the renewable energy works and found them really impressive, fast decision making, practical and really supportive.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Haven't tried Chinese food in my entire life, but in China i had to taste some😉
Pros
  • visa and housing support
  • great matching and networking opportunities

GAC

Spending the summer in Beijing with Go Abroad China changed everything for me. I was just a teenager and pretty anxious about going off on my own, but right from the start the program made it all feel manageable and stress free. The host family treated me like one of their own family members and got to know all other teenagers immediately and at the end separating from them was really not ok. On weekends city exploring, language learning, historical places and many more. I swear I won't trade the experience for anything else.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Definitely was the first day at the host family house, cause i barely spoke Chinese and they didn't speak that much of English, dinner was really awkward at first and we had a lot of smiling and pointing at the food, util the girl there pulled our her phone and used the google translator
Pros
  • staff genuinely cares about you and checks in regularly
  • you can make many friends
  • host families felt like a second home

Thank you China!

I'm a final law student from Poland and really i was eager to understand the Chinese law system, is it similar to Korea? or different so i started my journey with Go Abroad China, sending my application from the same platform where i am reviewing now. i was placed in a Chinese law firm specializing in international trade and IP law honestly that's exactly what i needed (i tried understanding whole law system of China so this was also good) . i assisted my co-workers with contract reviews, trademark filings and also had the opportunity of setting in client consultations. my colleague (actually new ones) took time to explain to me how the system is different here from Europe and it was eye opening. GAC handled A-Z as promised and greatly appreciated & highly recommended for any law student. considering international practice.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Chinese law that's really different from Korea
Cons
  • giving more information about the host company will help in fast adaptability

9/10 is enough in life

Spending my MBA summer in Shanghai with Go Abroad China was great, I was placed in a marketing consultancy and because my interest is in supply chain, they didn't waste a second to put me into work from day one real work and reposts started. GAC handled everything, visa, a place to stay and even picking me up from airport so I didn't really have to worry on basics and it was worth paying for these. My mentor in host company was Vivian and really took time to explain strategies and reasons behind it. Weekends were city tours and spending time with other interns visiting cities, and cultural places. Now I know a little bit of Chinese too alongside my urdu.

What was your funniest moment?
the funniest moment was when i was talking to my host company all of sudden my American accent slipped to Indian accent.
Pros
  • positive work space
  • clear and fast communication
  • Chinese Language Course was really helpful

My event management internship

Go Abroad China landed me an event management internship at a luxury hotel in Shanghai (my favorite city) and honestly it couldn’t have been a better match. From my first week I stepped into real events, management and even I had to manage an event for a product launch too. The team was friendly and i got adopted with them faster than I thought, they were supportive and welcoming from the first day.

GAC sorted out my visa and found me an apartment, so I didn’t have to stress over any of that. Living in Shanghai? That was just the cherry on top.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
maybe treat your guest well, and try to be as welcoming as possible
Pros
  • a luxury hotel placement which was amazing
  • nice and luxury apartment
  • visa support and fast communication

Don't try Stinky tofu 😁

I spent four months at Beijing Cultural University through GAC and honestly, it was a wild ride. The classes ugh Super intense. Still my Chinese shot up way faster than I expected. My host family was awesome too. They really made me feel like part of the family, which helped a lot.

Now, the commute took forever. Annoying, but honestly, totally worth it.

As for food—let’s just say I got adventurous. Stinky tofu was by far the weirdest thing I tried. It smelled like straight-up garbage, but the taste wasn’t as bad as I thought. My host brother nearly died laughing watching me eat it.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Stinky tofu was by far the weirdest thing I tried.
Pros
  • Honestly Food was amazing except the Stinky tofu
  • city exploring was by far good
  • support and communication from program provider

Chinese are smarter than I thought

Have you ever noticed why Chinese are really good at building startups? Maybe you have thought of different things and reasons, but there is only one reason why by my opinion and that's marketing. As a recent graduate from university of Melbourne Australia | Marketing Major, I was really curious of starting my startup, but before that by the career advisor I was advised to get practical experience of startup and where startups are built, and honestly there's no other best option when you see the LC Sign in your for you feed, so I chose China too. Thanks to Go Abroad China for placing me in a company where I learned more, saw startups practically and Chin's growing market, explored city and it's massive working labor. at the end I had the opportunity of going to the China wall for once lifetime I think.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
surprising thing i saw i would say CHINA
Pros
  • good behaving colleagues
  • Visa & Airport Pick Up
  • making new friends and networks
