Best summer of my life

I'm 19 and this was my first time traveling without my parents. Honestly, I was nervous, but the coordinators made everything feel safe and fun. My homestay mum taught me how to make dumplings, and my host brother taught me to play basketball. Classes were actually interesting — my teacher made learning Mandarin feel like a game. Made friends from all over the world. I'm already planning to go back for a full gap year after graduation. I learned more, experienced more and was way more more different than i have heard about China.

Internship + Chinese study changed my life

I wanted a gap year that actually meant something, not just backpacking. This program gave me structure and purpose. I studied at Fudan University in Shanghai while interning at a finance firm. My Mandarin improved so much I could hold business meetings by month four. The support team was incredible — always there when I needed help. Now I'm working in international trade, and this experience is on every interview list. Worth every penny. Thanks from Go Abroad China and their respected team for pairing the way to do this.

Best gap year decision I ever made

Finished uni in Swiss and had no clue what to do next. Found GAC's gap year program and figured why not. Spent 4 months in Beijing—interned at a marketing startup in the mornings, took Mandarin classes in the afternoons, and explored the city on weekends.

The team found me a shared apartment with other international interns, so I never felt alone. Made friends from all over the world. My Mandarin went from zero to ordering food, bargaining at markets, and actually having conversations.

Came back with real work experience, a global network, and way more confidence. Now applying for jobs in international business. If you're stuck after graduation, do this.

Living with a Chinese family flipped my whole study

I spent five months at Peking University through GAC, and during that time, I stayed with a host family in Haidian. At first, I was pretty nervous. Moving in with people I’d never met, in a completely new country? That’s scary stuff. But right from the start, my host mum went out of her way to make me feel at home. She showed me how to make dumplings (mine always fell apart), helped me untangle my Mandarin homework, and brought me along when she went home for the holidays.

The classes at the university were awesome—small groups, teachers who actually wanted us to get it, and a real sense that I was improving. But honestly, most of the real learning happened every night at dinner. Trying to talk about my day in Mandarin, stumbling through sentences while my host family laughed (always supportive, though)—that’s where everything started to click.

I didn’t just come back with better Chinese. I came back with a second family. So if you want something deeper than a regular language course, go live with a host family. You’ll get way more out of the experience.

Placed at a clean energy startup

I joined GAC's Career Launch program as a mid-career engineer and it was a great shift from my usual routine. They placed me with a clean energy startup in Shenzhen where I worked on battery storage projects. The team was young, ambitious, and I got to contribute to real technical discussions from week one. Coming from a structured Norwegian work culture, the pace in China was different but in a good way—fast decisions, lots of collaboration, and genuine curiosity about my experience. Thank you so much for the experience!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
My first team meeting. Everyone was speaking Mandarin and suddenly the lead engineer turned to me and asked for my opinion in English. I felt exposed, like I hadn't earned my place yet. I just said what I honestly thought based on my background, kept it simple. After that, the team started including me more in English and I felt way more comfortable. It taught me to just speak up when I have something to contribute.
Pros
  • Placement matched my actual professional background
  • GAC handled all visa and housing logistics
  • Gave me new perspective on global energy markets

Consulting with manufactures

One of the most rewarding experiences of my entire life because of how it was structured by Go Abroad China's team. I applied from here on profile of them after searching longer and seeing many other program providers too and within a short amount of time I received reply and had interview with them and so the host company. Airport pick up and visa support really helped me as a stranger to settle in a place that I have never been to it in my life. We had Chinese classes and weekend tours with other colleagues of host company.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
China's highest tower

I spent 5 months in Beijing

I left Melbourne with literally zero plans and said why not give this a shot? My host family in Haidian turned out to be amazing—my host mum made me breakfast every morning and always helped me with my Mandarin which i really felt like a home. The PKU campus oh come on it was Huge and honestly beautiful. Classes kept me on my toes, but I actually enjoyed them. On weekends, I'd go to hutongs or head out to the Great Wall with friends I’d just met from all over the world like I was really amazed and By the third month, I could bargain at the markets and even hold real conversations with my host brother. I came back way more confident and now I want to go to China for job.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
i would say it was Long xu tang which i honestly liked it
Pros
  • good language support
  • airport pick up and visa support was welcoming
  • Kind and well host family

Thanks to my mentor

Interning at a fortune 500 company in shanghai blew me away like really it did. Instead of grabbing coffee, waling around the office, laughing and setting I jumped right into real marketing campaigns. My mentor didn’t let me hide in the background either or as always just grab a coffee and sit somewhere—they had me present straight to clients. Terrifying at first, but honestly, it was incredible. The GAC team took care of everything—visa, apartment, even some survival Mandarin lessons. I met friends from all over the globe. Three months later, I’ve got job offers and a totally new outlook. Every second was worth spending there and the cultural tour was amazing, sharing a moment here with you.

Pros
  • positive working place
  • you can make many friends
  • fast adaptability
