Dominica Review

It was a great trip and experience! I would have liked if we could do more hiking since that is what Dominica is known for. I also think there should have been more physical therapy things. While we did go and see people in their home, it was just for a day. I think maybe a couple days of that would be great. I think we also should have been better prepared about the patients we would see like in the infirmary or PHARCS, most of the time we didn’t know what we were doing and the staff from the place expected us to do a lot. Overall it was a good experience and I would recommend students to go!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I have never been or seen a waterfall that big so going and experiencing that was fun. And that we got to go in the pool below the waterfall.

FSC DPT Dominica Trip

I had a fantastic experience with Therapy Abroad. It allowed me to see an area of the world I never thought I would be able to otherwise see or experience, as well as how the healthcare system here worked. This is as a great opportunity to open my eyes to the other parts of the world. I felt that the trip did a good job balancing opportunities to explore the natural beauty of the country as well as the healthcare field. We viewed a wide variety of settings in a short amount of time supplying a very holistic sense of the medical system here.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I ate dashee (purple ground vegetable) and hadn’t before. It was alright
Pros
  • Saw a new country
  • Got to enter a hot springs
  • Widened my healthcare experiences
Cons
  • Potentially Dangerous City
  • Sometimes weird food (tasted fine by internally my body disagreed with it)

Therapy Abroad Dominica

Such an amazing trip!! I learned so much about the rich culture and health care systems in Dominica. Katie our tour guide was absolutely amazing and kept us all in check and shared so much knowledge about the country. The drivers were also very friendly and got us to our locations very safe. The food was amazing and the clinical sites were a very positive experience and definitely will help me for my future career as a physical therapist. I would highly recommend this trip to some of my peers as it truly changed my outlook on physical therapy.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The different types of stories and communication styles of the clients.

Dominica Review

I liked this trip a lot. There weren’t a ton of physical therapy opportunities and it was more of a “chill” vibe which was fine. I wish we did more beach/ocean time because we really only got a few hours of free time because everything after dinner was closed. i would reccomend this trip to physical therapy students aspiring to go to Pt school because it would strengthen their application and shows that you have a wide range of abilities and good volunteer hours. Overall this trip was super fun and I would do it again

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I saw a green sea turtle and octopus which was crazy
Pros
  • Healthcare experience
  • Fun adventures
  • Serving a community
Cons
  • Not a lot of free time

Physical Therapy in San Ignacio

My time in Belize was very impactful! Providing care as a physical therapy student in Belize offers a profound impact, both personally and professionally. It fosters cultural humility, deepens clinical skills, and strengthens adaptability in resource-limited settings. We were able to address unmet rehabilitation needs, promote long-term health outcomes, and build meaningful relationships that transcend borders, leaving a lasting legacy of service and learning. I would love to be able to come back!!

What was your funniest moment?
Doing zoomba with the local women

Review

This was a great experience to see healthcare in another country. It was very eye opening to see how other countries and cultures approach the medical system. The physical therapy aspect of the trip was very rewarding to help provide a service many of the people of Belize did not have access to. The touristy aspect of the trip was also great! The cave tubing the first day was amazing. This was one of my top ten experiences in my life. The water and the caves were so beautiful. I would definitely recommend fellow students to go on this experience.

Pros
  • Service
  • Hodes Place
  • Restaurants for dinner
Cons
  • Long bus rides
  • Some disorganization

Belize Trip

I really enjoyed the trip! Full days of service were awesome! The food and hotel were perfect for our group. The only thing I would recommend changing would be the travel times. Driving 2 hours on treatment days when we could have been adding more patient care time would have been more beneficial! Or moving our hotel location to Belmopan or Belize city! The staff were very attentive and helpful during our time! I would definitely recommend this trip and would go again! My favorite days were spent at the innovation center helping pediatric patients!

Physical Therapy Belize trip

I throughly enjoyed this trip! I learned some much and had a great time treating patients in Belize. It was a very impactful trip and I would recommend it to anyone interested. This was my second year going! You get to go on an excursion and treat patients all in one trip. You get to do a little bit of everything on this trip. Everything is taken care of for you and we only had to pay for our dinners each night. Belize holds a special place in my heart. Thanks therapy aboard for this amazing opportunity!

Time in San Ignacio

This week in Belize was incredibly impactful as a student physical therapist. Working with underserved communities deepened my understanding of global healthcare disparities and strengthened my clinical skills through hands-on patient care. I built meaningful connections, adapted to limited resources, and saw firsthand how compassion and creativity can bridge gaps in care. This experience profoundly shaped my growth as both a clinician and a person. I can honestly say this has impacted me more than I could’ve ever expected and I am so thankful to have been apart of this trip.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be open to trying new things!

Great Time in Belize

My time in Belize with Therapy Abroad was unforgettable. Working alongside Ms. Patty and Tyrone was inspiring—they brought warmth, expertise, and a deep passion for helping others. We provided speech and language services while immersing ourselves in the local culture. The experience was both educational and heartwarming, filled with meaningful connections and personal growth. I left Belize with new skills, lifelong memories, and a greater appreciation for global service.

My only complaint was the amount of driving we did. Spending 3.5 hours on a bus one day was very draining
