Belize trip 2026

We had a great guide all along our trip who made sure that we had great food and were always enjoying our time. All of the places we stayed were very nice and the locals were very helpful and willing to get to know the students. All activities were planned out well and all we really had to do was just show up which was really nice. We had van drivers throughout the week as well and they were always willing to take us on coffee runs, bakery runs, and anything that we wanted to do. Thank you for making this trip possible!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
We were able to go snorkeling, zip lining, and cave tubing!

The BEST Experience!

Not only did this experience leave me with clinical experience for the future, but also memories I will cherish forever! The perfect balance of learning and fun! I loved being able to spend several days working with families and kids in need. It felt so good to come in and make a difference in so many people’s lives. On the other hand, we had so many fun excursions and experiences to learn more about culture and just for fun! My favorite day was ziplining and cave tubing! We also went snorkeling, to a Mayan women’s village, and to an ancient Mayan archaeological site!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
We got to go tubing through a cave that the Mayans used for ceremonies! It was so cool to make our way through it and see mineral deposits, fish, and even swim around!

HPU PT Service Trip

We had an absolutely amazing experience with Therapy Abroad. They were well organized and the guides were very knowledgeable. Ms. Patty and Ms. D helped us organize and carry out two very successful clinics over 4 days. Wilson and Roberto became part of our family. We won’t forget this experience and the students learned so much. The food was amazing and we learned a ton about the culture of Belize and their people. TEC and Hode’s were great places to stay and so welcoming. We went cave tubing and to learn how chocolate is made as our excursions.

What was your funniest moment?
“Lo siento, Wilson!”

Belize

My experience to Belize was nothing short of incredible. Getting to have hands on clinical experience was something I will never forget. My amazing supervisors made sure the trip was smooth and efficient even with unexpected challenges. I fell in love with the people of Belize and found school screenings to be my favorite part of the trip. Caye Caulker was also a great area to relax after a week of working hard. I hope to do another therapy abroad trip next year! I will definitely be recommending this trip to other students.

IUP Therapy Abroad - Belize

This experience was life-changing! Being able to work hands-on with clients really allowed me to strengthen my skills and education. The tykes camp allowed me to create an individualized therapy session and use it with a real client. In combination with the therapy camp, the fun activities were amazing. We went ziplining, cave tubing, attended a Mayan village tour, and took endless coffee trips. The food was great everywhere we went, and the ice cream was even better! I would recommend this experience to everyone looking to travel and expand their cultural knowledge as an SLP.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
The most unfamiliar thing I ate was called a fry jack! When I returned home, I described this food to my friends and family as a combination of a funnel cake and a food we call dippy pizza. During the trip we ate fry jacks for breakfast and we would either put honey on it or stuff them with eggs and sausage. It was always something I looked forward too.
Pros
  • Making connections in an a different country.
  • Meeting new people from my college and creating new friends.
  • Traveling to a new country and expanding my cultural awareness.
Cons
  • Not being able to pick meals.
  • Low water pressure.

SLP Therapy Abroad in Belize

I had the best time on the SLP Therapy Abroad to Belize! This was my first time out of the country, which I was nervous about, but I felt extremely supported during the whole trip. I highly recommended participating in a faculty-led Therapy Abroad trip for your first time out of the country! The culture in Belize was so vibrant and welcoming. We had a multitude of opportunities to learn more about the culture through a Garifuna cooking class, opportunity to play traditional music, and more! I earned 18 clinical hours from this trip, and they were invaluable! Having clients back to back and being limited in materials made me a more flexible clinician, and helped me recognize that clinical skills matter more than materials or extensive preparation.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
You will have plenty of opportunities to practice speaking Spanish and using ASL… give it a try!
Pros
  • The 7 day stay was perfect!
  • Everything is pre-planned, you don’t have to stress about making decisions!
  • I felt that my SLP documentation skills greatly improved from this trip.

Had an amazing time in Belize!!!

Both personally and clinically this trip was an incredible experience. I had so much fun and really bonded with the students and faculty on the trip. I was also pushed to try new things and really apply my clinical skills in a unique way. If I can do therapy in a gravel field with some play doh and an iPad, I can do therapy anywhere. It was really interesting to learn about to culture of Belize and to also get a chance to experience that culture in action. I love to travel, and this was an amazing way to get some truly once in a lifetime experiences while providing services to people who need them.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Keep an open mind!! Before and during the program don’t try too hard to control and prepare for every detail. You will have so much fun and learn a lot if you are just open to whatever experiences come your way. Don’t be afraid to say yes!
Pros
  • The faculty and trip leaders truly provided everything we needed and supported us throughout the trip.
Cons
  • Short term so it felt like there was so much more I wanted to see and do!

I had the best time in Belize do speech and language therapy with the kids there! It was so cool to see a connection develop with the kids and their families in such a short time! Also, there were so many fun things we experienced in the country of Belize such as a cultural dinner and yoga on the beach! I would highly recommend this trip to someone who wants a new experience, wants to be taken out of their comfort zone, and wants to grow as a professional in their specific field! I will remember this trip throughout my whole career!

Belize January 2026

This trip was a life-changing experience and I am so glad I had this opportunity. I gained hands on experience with children that I can and will use in graduate school and in my future career as an SLP. It was challenging at times, but I found that is where I learned the most! It was a good balance between academics and enjoying the outdoors as well. We had the chance to go zip lining and cave tubing, which was so much fun! Overall, this trip took me out of my comfort zone and I made so many memories I will cherish forever🤍

Belize trip January 2026

This experience was absolutely amazing! I was very nervous for this trip because I have never been out of the country before, but I just tried to fully embrace the culture and the experiences and I’m so happy I did! Interacting with all of the people and learning from them was so interesting! I had such a meaningful time testing everyone’s hearing and just seeing how needed it is in Belize. The only critique I have is that we didn’t always get to pick our own meals; however, I completely understand that as a big group that’s not always feasible, so it wasn’t that big of a deal! Overall, I would rate this program highly and recommend an experience like this and with this program/company to everyone!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice is to embrace the culture you are in, learn about the culture and area you will be in, and say yes to the experiences while on the trip. Sometimes it can feel a bit out of your comfort zone, but it’s part of the adventure and experience!
Pros
  • Culture and food was amazing!
  • The therapy abroad staff was incredibly supportive and was always able to answer any questions I had!
