Belize 2025

This trip offered a variety of experiences, from a stay in the rainforest and sleeping in a cabana to chocolate making. Therapy abroad offered a nice blend of work and play, often pushing us to new limits. During therapy time we had to get out of our comfort zone with taking control of all aspects of camp. The supervisors were all incredibly kind, helpful, and responsive. The biggest bit of feedback back I have is I really wish our day to day was more organized and planned further in advance. Many time what we were doing was finalized day of, causing disorganization and stress.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing I saw was the villages we did home visits in! It was really interesting to see how the villagers live and how differently they live from westerners.
Pros
  • Cultural enrichment
  • Diverse experiences
  • New relationships
Cons
  • Bugs
  • Disorganized
  • So much chicken

I have had such a great experience in Belize with Therapy Abroad! We got to live right in the middle of Belizean life, and got to experience such incredible food, culture, and more! There were lots of fun surprises along the way, and the entire trip was a great mix of fun and valuable experience. From zip lining to cave tubing to jumping off the pier into the ocean and binding with the clients at Tykes camp, every aspect was such a character building experience, and I am so grateful for getting to experience it and make great friendships along the way!

What was your funniest moment?
Joining in the Garifuna celebration of life!
Pros
  • Getting to experience being immersed in the culture and getting to experience Belize first-hand.
  • Free time to experience the village.
  • Experiencing lots of different food.
Cons
  • Being unprepared for the first two days.
  • Sometimes there were a few communication issues.

I have loved my experience with Therapy Abroad and feel like I have learned so much! Partnering with the special education program in Punta Gorda has been such a unique opportunity to serve their community while also learning and preparing for a career as an SLP. Belize as a whole is also beautiful, making our adventures scenic and exciting for the entire group. The main place we stayed- Piece of Ground in Punta Gorda- was a lovely home base, and the owners were so kind, cooking for us every day and sharing their town with us!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Keep an open mind and immerse yourself in every experience as much as you can!
Pros
  • Opportunity to serve an underserved community
  • Great clinical experience
  • Beautiful scenery
Cons
  • Unprepared for the first 2 days
  • Wished there were more days of camp

Therapy Abroad Belize

The people housing us and caring for us were amazing, so kind, understanding, and helpful. There was some miscommunication regarding different issues such as scheduling, recording hours, and what is expected of us. This seemed to be an issue with Therapy Abroad rather than our supervisors and staff. The excursions were well planned and enjoyable and made the break times fun. Camp time was hard, but exciting as we got to meet wonderful kids and help them out. Cannot praise the owners of Piece of Ground enough, they were wonderful.

Pros
  • good food
  • fun excursions
  • great people
Cons
  • miscommunication
  • lots of bugs
  • long days

Overall a good experience

I enjoyed the experience overall and thought it was a good learning opportunity, and I gained a lot of valuable insight into the profession. There was a good amount of opportunity for clinician hours, but I wish we could’ve gotten more observational hours. I didn’t love the education center we stayed at for the first few nights, but everything else was fun.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Getting more observational hours
Pros
  • Adventures and cool experiences
  • Good experience to the profession
  • Clinical hours
Cons
  • Tropical education center

Overall good experience

Good way to learn and get experience. I enjoyed getting to meet new people from different parts of the United States. I think that the first two days at the Zoo were not needed and we could have done more of camp if we didn’t stay there. I like the Piece of Ground location though. Very nice and the people were so kind. I also really enjoyed my leaders, they were very encouraging and helpful in teaching and showing us different types of therapy. I would recommend this trip to my friends and would speak very highly of this trip.

Leaving a new person

Participating in this program was one of the best things I've ever done in my adult life thus far. The dichotomy between the United States and Dominica made me reevaluate my day to day life and question where exactly I'm pouting my energy into. I had the privilege of meeting so many wonderful people whom left me seriously evaluating what kind of person I want to be in this world. I am leaving Dominica extraordinarily grateful for the opportunity and burning with a newfound desire to help those who can't help themselves.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
It's normal to feel a wave of culture shock upon arrival, but don't let it prevent you from experiencing new things.
Pros
  • Pre-planned meals
  • Affordable markets within walking distance
  • Very little language barrier
Cons
  • Countless bug bites (bring spray!)
  • Frequent catcalling

Belize

This trip was an awesome opportunity to get to travel to a new country and immerse myself in a new culture while also building my resume and putting clinical knowledge to practice. I loved Tykes Camp and found it super helpful to get hands on experience and meet to many new people! Dr. Liz was especially helpful and I learned so much from her. Overall, this trip was so well-balanced with work and fun activities. Everyone was so kind and I’d highly recommend. I hope I can come back to Belize someday!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Step out of your comfort zone and try new foods and fruits! I loved getting to try local dishes even if I didn’t love it. Also, take the time to ask questions and learn from the supervisors. This trip is a very unique experience and you can learn a lot from them and apply it to Tykes Camp.
Pros
  • Fun activities and great food
  • Clinical experience
  • The kindest kids and community in Belize
Cons
  • Very hot
  • Lots of driving time
  • Sometimes there was a lot of down time in the afternoons

Belize 2025

Spending a week in Belize with Therapy Abroad was truly one of the most meaningful experiences I’ve had. Everything flowed so smoothly, thanks to our amazing coordinators, Chad and Ms. Patty. They made us feel so supported and welcomed, and they shared their love for Belize’s beautiful, rich culture. We followed a well planned itinerary, and I got to be part of speech, language, and hearing screenings, and the hands on experience left me feeling deeply inspired and motivated to keep pursuing this path. And honestly, one of the best parts was the people. I made some really great friends who I know I’ll keep in touch with. I’m so thankful for this opportunity!
