Experience of a Life Time

getting to participate in Therapy Abroad was the highlight of my academic career and I am so happy I took the leap of faith and decided to go abroad. This program granted me with the opportunity to create life long friends, learn about cultural differences and experiences, learn so much from colleagues and advisors, and finally apply what i’ve learned in the academic setting, into real life application! this program changed my life and I flew home a better person. ABSOLUTELY would reccomend !!!!

What would you improve about this program?
none of us knew anything going in. It made it difficult because we didn’t know what was happening, what we’d do or anything of that sorts. moving forward I would love more information and a huge debriefing at the beginning of our program
Pros
  • great people
  • great food
  • great experience
Cons
  • left in the dark about things
  • a little last minute planning
  • nothing else

Therapy Abroad-Belize

This program is amazing if you want to learn more while having fun. You get to learn from amazing faculty and the staff are very attentive and supportive to your every need. One thing I would change is the scheduling. Some days were so packed we were left feeling drained. Also things were added so last minute that it kept throwing us off. Also the lack of communication on the details of the excursions and trips made it difficult to prepare at times. We would also like more independence when choosing meals because some times it felt like we weren’t given much choice or options. It’s definitely tiring but, worth it in the end for the experience.

Belize-> caye caulker

San Ignacio was absolutely amazing and beautiful!! Mr. Lewis and Mr. Eddie were so informative and made sure we were safe at all times. Our supervisors really made our time here enjoyable and they made sure we leaned a lot. I feel more confident in myself and the group of girls on this trip were so supportive. Being open to new things not just food but also excursions. As one of our supervisors said “You grow when you’re uncomfortable”. It is the perfect length of time to go because as the trip comes to an end everyone was getting a little home sick. This was such a great experience and I highly recommend studying abroad even if it’s for only 2 weeks it is life changing.

What would you improve about this program?
Having a more informative schedule where we understand what is happening but also have a little down time to recuperate.
Pros
  • The food was so yummy
  • The camp was so rewarding and getting to interact with the families
  • The different types of excursions we were able to experience
Cons
  • Not knowing what was going to happen next
  • No down time (especially in caye caulker. We enjoyed snorkeling but if we were able to have breakfast at 8 and then snorkeling at 9:30)

Truly the best and most rewarding experience!

I would recommend Therapy Abroad to anyone. While I didn’t really know what to expect when I signed up, I truly ended up having the most amazing time, I met lifelong friends, endured life changing experiences, saw awesome places, and expanded my knowledge. The resources and skills I learned from this trip, later helped me greatly when building my resume for Occupational Therapy school. I got accepted to my program at Mizzou a year early after attending therapy abroad. This trip helped me grow a lot professionally and as a person. The memories made will last a lifetime, the students I met were truly some of the coolest and funniest people and we all built such a special bond as well as with all our staff members and guides. I later even traveled to another state to visit friends I had met on this trip. Overall, Therapy Abroad is an amazing program that brings students from all over together to help them pursue professional goals in cool places!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I remember the most nerve-racking moment was just getting there in the first place, I had never been to another country before or traveled alone. I flew out of New York by myself to meet up with all these people in another country. I knew no one and I was so nervous but something had led me to want to do this trip. My advice to anyone is to just do it! Even if you’re scared and don’t know a soul, take that leap of faith because it ended up so worth it in the end!
Pros
  • Travel
  • Professional Experiences
  • People
Cons
  • No AC at stone and compass haha

I had an amazing experience with therapy abroad in our trip to Puerto Rico! I would have never imagined how much Inwas going to learn both culturally and about my field. Giving therapy in the camp taught me so much about various materials and acitivites that are available and I will be anle to use them once I graduate. Everyone was very inviting and made us feel comfortable to ask questions and learn more. Learning about the history was also very interesting. Great friendships were formed and I would love to visit Puerto Rico again!

Study Abroad In Puerto Rico

Traveling to Puerto Rico as a graduate speech language pathology student and collaborating with students Albizu University was a great experience. I learned so much from this trip hosted by Matt and Chad at Therapy Abroad. I was able to increase my cultural awareness through learning about the rich history of Puerto Rico. I will say that touring Old San Juan and spending several day in Mayagüez was very special as I got to see the “real” Puerto Rico. I also enjoyed trying new foods and sightseeing.

What was your funniest moment?
Traveling from beach to beach with my amazing friends and exploring “la placita”.

Puerto Rico Study Abroad 2023

This opportunity allowed me to emerge myself into a culture that although is similar to mine is unique and full of rich history. Traveling to Puerto Rico was a great opportunity and has enhanced my clinical skills for the future when working with bilingual populations as an SLP. Collaboration between students from Albizu University in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico was the highlight of my trip. From trying new foods, visiting amazing beaches, and enjoying town festivities; this trip was an amazing way to increase my cultural awareness.

Puerto Rico 2023- Speech Pathology

Traveling to Puerto Rico was definitely a highlight of my year. Matt and Chad did an amazing job creating an itinerary that immersed us into the culture of Puerto Rico. From walking tours to finding unique restaurants, we were able to learn so much about the island. I think the best part of it all was being able to collaborate with other graduate students from a different university. We were able to share ideas and collaborate to provide effective therapy to the kids. I highly recommend traveling with Therapy Abroad!

Puerto Rico Study Abroad

I loved learning about the new culture, it was amazing to emerge ourselves in it and meet so many amazing people. I also loved the food we had! Very grateful for this experience and everything I got to learn. I was able to see what I have learned in school in a different language with kids who I had never met before. The program that we were a part of helped me work in a fast pace environment, my classmates and I were able to use our problem solving skills in order to provide the best services possible to the kids. Learning about my field in a different language was definitely an eye opening experience. My first language is Spanish, however, their dialect was different from the one I know and it helped me learn new words and implement therapy in a different way.
