Great trip

I absolutely loved my experience in Belize. I got to learn a ton about doing hearing screenings and even got to do a few of my own. I also really thought that the activities were really fun, especially cave tubing because I love activities in the water. The food was also really good as well and majority of the restaurants that were selected I enjoyed. I would definitely recommend this to anybody and think that it’s a really unique and valuable experience. I truly had an amazing time and would definitely do it again.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing I saw was definitely the caves during cave tubing. It was so cool to see what was in there and to hear about what happened in them back when the Mayans were in Belize
Pros
  • Excursions
  • Food
Cons
  • Accommodations
  • Food (had some issues with allergies and food not coming)

Worth Every Dollar!

I absolutely loved my experience with Therapy Abroad! I got to work with certified SLPs to help perform speech screenings, and this was my first ever experience doing something like that! Going into it I didn’t know what to expect since we were not given many details, but I would say almost to everything was a happy surprise! I would say I would’ve liked to have had more 1 on 1 time with the kids in Belize, but I understand why that may have not been possible. I am thankful for this experience, and would highly recommend it to people who are wanting to serve abroad - just to have an open mind and be eager to try new things that may be out of your comfort zone!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I ate a termite and actually liked it! It tasted like mint!
Pros
  • Got to work with and observe certified SLPs!
  • Gratifying working with underprivileged students!
  • Got to try new things and learn more about myself along with other cultures!
Cons
  • More details could have been given before the trip!
  • Not getting to have full hands on experience!
  • It not being longer!

Belize

I enjoyed my experience overall and had a great time. I found the therapy part to be a bit challenging in that we didn’t know much information about the clients we were seeing or their condition. There could be improvement in the sustainability aspect of the therapy we were doing. However, I learned a lot more about my field of study, and feel I grew as a person and future SLP. I also enjoyed learning about the culture of Belize. I was glad to be able to take advantages of other activities such as snorkeling and cave tubing. I would certainly recommend the trip to others.

Overall an incredible experience

This was an overall incredible experience. I’ve learned a lot about the field I aspire to work in from a perspective that I wouldn’t get in USA. The time spent working with the students was insightful, and truly made me feel that I am headed towards a career that will be fulfilling and right for me. I have no regrets about coming on this trip.

There was a lack of organization and communication from staff that left me and other students confused about what to expect. Not having a reliable itinerary or plan made it difficult to coordinate and prepare for activities that would be beneficial for students. This made me feel as if, in my 8 days here, we did not benefit and impact the students as much as we could’ve.

Food was awesome!

therapy abroad experience

I truly loved this trip. Going into it, I was open minded and ready to get involved. Each day I feel I got to learn something new and it taught me to be flexible each day. I was happy that I got to experience hands on therapy with children and also experience other activities in Belize. I was in awe of the beautiful nature and had the best time meeting to students in my group. During this trip, it made me appreciate what I have and I hope a made a beneficial impact. I am thankful I got to attend this trip and I hope one day I am able to attend again.

What would you improve about this program?
I had a great experience, but I feel that communication and keeping to the schedule presented at the beginning would have been helpful to prepare for each day and therapy day.
Pros
  • Experiencing a new culture and trying new foods
  • Doing fun activities unique to Belize
  • Interacting with students and serving them
Cons
  • Changing of the presented schedule

Review

I had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. The only issue that I really had was with food allergy accommodations - my chicken allergy was taken care of, but my egg allergy (which is the one I’m more allergic to) was never listed as an allergy of mine. I really enjoyed going cave tubing and I also really enjoyed the clinical experience. Before this program I had not had the chance to get to do hearing screenings and other types of testing, and it was fun to do so during my time volunteering.

What would you improve about this program?
I would do more to accommodate food allergies. I struggled a ton with being able to eat food because my allergies weren’t marked down even though I had put it on every form and had emailed someone in therapy abroad about it.
Pros
  • Fun adventures
  • Clinical experience
Cons
  • Food allergy accommodations
  • First location where we stayed

Belize

I loved the experience of working with others and learning about the culture of a new country. It was engaging and fun, interesting and definitely something I have never experienced before. I loved snorkeling and zip lining, learning about the history of Belize and knowing more about this country I have never visited before. I really enjoyed this experience and hope to come back soon, maybe with family and friends! It was a wonderful way to explore speech language pathology while seeing a new country.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Zip lining!
Pros
  • Food
  • Fun
  • Experiencing new culture
Cons
  • No info on accommodations before hand, maybe more in the future?

My second trip

I am so glad I chose to spend my spring break with Therapy Abroad in Belize! This is my second trip to Belize with this company and I couldn’t be more appreciative of what it has offered me clinically and socially! I have taken all of my time here and have made the most of it. It has allowed me to feel confident in my future career, and even boost my resume for grad school applications. I have made so memorable connections on trips with Therapy Abroad, and each new experience is one I will always appreciate it.

Therapy Abroad in Belize

During this past January I traveled with Illinois State University to Belize for 10 days. While we were there we went on several excursions and fully immersed ourselves into the diverse cultures of Belize. From zip lining, to cave tubing, to swimming with nurse sharks and string rays - we all had such a fun time. For the bulk of the time we spent in Belize, we were focused in San Ignacio working with clients across all ages. As an undergraduate, this was an incredible experience since I have not worked with diverse age groups of clients and with people with disabilities. Therapy Abroad does an incredible job with setting up the entire experience for us so that we don’t have to worry about transportation, housing, and most of our meals. I will always treasure the relationships I’ve built with every person we met and had the opportunity to begin to get to know. If only we had more time to continue doing such amazing work! This was truly an experience of a lifetime and I would recommend to anyone looking for a diverse experience!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I was definitely a bit worried to go zip lining, but all of the employees made me feel safe and comfortable to do it. It was so fun and I’m so glad I did it! The views were insane!

Belize Therapy Abroad

This experience was truly the best experience of my life. I would have never done anything like this in my life if it wasn't for therapy abroad. I've traveled out of the country before, but this was different in the best way. The number of activities and excursions they plan for you with your time there is incredible. We did so much in 10 days I felt like I was gone for a month. I knew we would see different cultures and learn about them, but we were very embedded into the culture there from food, to music, to presentations, and more. I loved learning about this and now I am able to bring this knowledge into my clinic back at school. The clients I have connected with are people I will never forget. Making a difference in their lives in just a few shorts days is incredible. I will never stop thinking about this trip and I recommend everyone to go!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
A lot of us got to see the howler monkeys which was so cool! The sound they make is so loud and doesn't sound like a sound they would be able to make. I also got to see Belize's national bird, a toucan, on one of our tours!
Pros
  • The excursions were incredible! - Tour of San Ignacio, Zipling, Cave tubing, Maya Womens Group Cultural Learning Center, Mayan Ruins, Zumba, etc.
  • Clinical Settings - Skilled Nursing Facility, Elementary and Preschool, Individual Appointments at Hodes
  • The different kinds of foods we got to try!
Cons
  • Travel days are long, especially if layover
  • Personally, I got a lot of misquito bites so double up on bug spray!
  • Easy to become overwhelmed. I learned to be flexible and more go with the flow as that's how most of our days went.
