My second trip

I am so glad I chose to spend my spring break with Therapy Abroad in Belize! This is my second trip to Belize with this company and I couldn’t be more appreciative of what it has offered me clinically and socially! I have taken all of my time here and have made the most of it. It has allowed me to feel confident in my future career, and even boost my resume for grad school applications. I have made so memorable connections on trips with Therapy Abroad, and each new experience is one I will always appreciate it.

Therapy Abroad in Belize

During this past January I traveled with Illinois State University to Belize for 10 days. While we were there we went on several excursions and fully immersed ourselves into the diverse cultures of Belize. From zip lining, to cave tubing, to swimming with nurse sharks and string rays - we all had such a fun time. For the bulk of the time we spent in Belize, we were focused in San Ignacio working with clients across all ages. As an undergraduate, this was an incredible experience since I have not worked with diverse age groups of clients and with people with disabilities. Therapy Abroad does an incredible job with setting up the entire experience for us so that we don’t have to worry about transportation, housing, and most of our meals. I will always treasure the relationships I’ve built with every person we met and had the opportunity to begin to get to know. If only we had more time to continue doing such amazing work! This was truly an experience of a lifetime and I would recommend to anyone looking for a diverse experience!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I was definitely a bit worried to go zip lining, but all of the employees made me feel safe and comfortable to do it. It was so fun and I’m so glad I did it! The views were insane!

Belize Therapy Abroad

This experience was truly the best experience of my life. I would have never done anything like this in my life if it wasn't for therapy abroad. I've traveled out of the country before, but this was different in the best way. The number of activities and excursions they plan for you with your time there is incredible. We did so much in 10 days I felt like I was gone for a month. I knew we would see different cultures and learn about them, but we were very embedded into the culture there from food, to music, to presentations, and more. I loved learning about this and now I am able to bring this knowledge into my clinic back at school. The clients I have connected with are people I will never forget. Making a difference in their lives in just a few shorts days is incredible. I will never stop thinking about this trip and I recommend everyone to go!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
A lot of us got to see the howler monkeys which was so cool! The sound they make is so loud and doesn't sound like a sound they would be able to make. I also got to see Belize's national bird, a toucan, on one of our tours!
Pros
  • The excursions were incredible! - Tour of San Ignacio, Zipling, Cave tubing, Maya Womens Group Cultural Learning Center, Mayan Ruins, Zumba, etc.
  • Clinical Settings - Skilled Nursing Facility, Elementary and Preschool, Individual Appointments at Hodes
  • The different kinds of foods we got to try!
Cons
  • Travel days are long, especially if layover
  • Personally, I got a lot of misquito bites so double up on bug spray!
  • Easy to become overwhelmed. I learned to be flexible and more go with the flow as that's how most of our days went.

Belize January 2024

Therapy Abroad helped create the most amazing and educational trip I have ever been on. From the extracurricular activities we were able to go on to the therapy and people we were able to work with, Therapy Abroad made sure every aspect went above and beyond our expectations. I met and worked with people and facilities I will never forget. I gained a different perspective to life from cultural responsiveness and appreciate to the clinical skills. I gained experiences I would never be able to any where else. Therapy abroad created a program to help students learn and grow as people and future clinicians. On top of that, they’re hospitality and willingness to help others was extra bonus to the beauty of this trip.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
For me, going into a clinical setting I had never been in and having to use the little bit of knowledge I did have to help other was extremely scary to me but it helped me be prepared for new experiences in my future career. I have never worked in a nursing home, and this experience helped me grow a new appreciation and love for this population of people.
Pros
  • Beautiful and friendly from most
  • Learning experiences and growth
  • Food different and delicious
Cons
  • Bugs
  • Men can be creepy even towards large groups
  • Humidity

Memories and experience of a lifetime!

I have been back now for three days and I am still reminiscing my time in Belize. I can’t stop going over all of the different clinical experiences and excursions we were able to experience. Doing therapy abroad made me a more confident clinician, a faster report writer, and a more well rounded clinician. I was able to build my clinical skills up in Belize and see a handful of clients, but I was also able to strengthen skills I already had. I could not recommend going on Therapy Abroad more to anyone.

What was your funniest moment?
Some of the funniest moments were had during the various excursions with our cohort members. Sharing laughs during Zumba with Miss Jen, making pottery watching a friend take a turn and climbing the caves as a group. All of the excursions made for lots of laughs and jokes.
Pros
  • Your group will get so much closer, it is guaranteed.
  • You will become so much more confident in yourself.
  • You will get so much more experience in things screenings, things you can not get a lot of fast experience with in clinic settings.
Cons
  • You need to be flexible, if this isn’t a skill for you then you will gain it during your stay.

Amazing time!

I learned so much about myself and the many cultures and languages that are a part of Belize during this amazing trip! We were able to go zip lining, cave tubing, snorkeling, and explore San Ignacio. We were accompanied by amazing tour guides who made our journey that much more fun. As a speech language pathology graduate student, I participated in valuable experiences including completing evaluations in a skilled nursing home, leading group and individual therapy sessions, and building meaningful connections with the residents.

What was your funniest moment?
Spending more time with my cohort and bonding!
Pros
  • Learned about the culture of Belize
Cons
  • Didn’t pack everything I needed

Incredible!

I had the best time with Therapy Abroad in Belize! The hands-on experience was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I feel as though I grew both as a clinician and as a person. Justin and Jamie were so helpful in every aspect of the trip and made this an unforgettable experience. The excursions were both exciting and educational. I enjoyed visiting the Maya Women’s Group and learning how they make their own food, embroider, and make pottery. My only complaint is that I wish the trip lasted longer!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I have never been snorkeling before this trip and I had so much fun! From swimming with sharks and stingrays to feeding the fish, it was such a great experience!

Not only did we get to experience the amazing beaches, cultural sites, views, food, etc, we got to make a difference and provide services to the most amazing, appreciative people. Everyone we encountered on this trip was so helpful and eager to make sure we had the best time possible. I felt taken care of and prepared by the therapy abroad staff the entire time. This trip was organized so well, and we got to experience many different things that Belize has to offer. Highly recommend this amazing experience to anyone interested.

The best experience

Truly the best experience I’ve ever encountered! I learned so much about effective, compassionate, and culturally, responsive service delivery. At the same time, we had so many adventures with the tour guides and the locals. I would not trade the experience for anything else. Additionally, I got to know my classmates and clinical educators better. I would highly recommend this study abroad opportunity to anyone seeking a better clinical understanding, and for adventure seekers. Therapy abroad is the best!

Belize!

This trip exceeded all my expectations! It was wonderfully planned and organized! There was a perfect balance between work and play. I felt that we were able to immerse ourself in the local community. It was great to be able to provide speech and language services to clients from 3 years old to 100 years old. We had the opportunity to see a variety of clients in different settings. Belize was a beautiful place to visit and we got to experience the sites on the main land and also the island. The activities were amazing. It was so much fun to experience Belize with this group of people!
