Therapy Abroad Belize

Having the opportunity to travel to Belize in the speech-language pathology program was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Going into this trip as a recent graduate, I hardly knew any of the girls I was traveling with. Ultimately, this was the best case scenario; I established meaningful relationships and learned how to connect with those I wouldn't have had a chance to otherwise. While being in a new country can seem scary, the level of organization provided an overarching sense of safety and security. The accommodations--which were charming and comfortable--exceeded my expectations. Everyone was very welcoming and the people I encountered elevated the trip through diverse culture and language. I especially loved how the program focused on the rich cultural heritage of the country, and the amazing and hard-working people who dedicate their lives to molding the children of their community with love and attention. Everyday was packed with exciting experiences, which I accredit to Therapy Abroad's amazing ability to blend service and fun. Besides our time working with children in Belize, my favorite activities involved Zumba in the park and canoeing through a history-rich cave. I accrued greater perspective at every turn and our time working directly with the local population provided a glimpse of the global impact I can make as a future speech pathologist. Overall, this experience solidified my passion for speech therapy by promoting cultural-linguistic diversity---while inspiring me to continue down this path as I move forward with my career.

Pros
  • Well-organized
  • Professional support
  • Excellent accommodations
Cons
  • Would've liked more time with the kids
  • Not enough training before interacting with the children

Best Experience

I was shown this program by my study aboard advisor and was quite curious how this would work out. I was hesitant at first to apply and nervous about going with strangers who I had never met or had any contact with before. However this was truly one of the best experiences I have ever had. Not only did I make 14 new best friends but the on hands field work with the children was once in a lifetime. Belize was a beautiful country and we were welcomed with open arms. I recommend this program to anybody who wants to work in this field and make connections with people who are pursuing the same career path.

Pros
  • Hand On Experience
  • Builds your social connections
  • Great for resume

Best experience ever

Therapy abroad in Belize not only taught me so many new things about being a speech pathologist but it introduced to to a culture and group of people I grew to love. The people I met in the program are some of the smartest and most kind hearted people I have ever met. Tykes camp or “mini camp”, was an extremely rewarding experience. I formed a bond with both of my clients/ kids and their families. This trip gave me peace of mind that I did pick the right future career. I love that we were also able to have a mini vacation at the end to reward our hard work with the kids. My only negative is that I wish I was able to stay longer!

Pros
  • Learning about a different culture
  • Meeting clients and forming bonds with them

Thailand UWEC AAC Program 2023

Therapy Abroad does such a great job organizing time to work with local organizations to provide therapy, go on fun excursions, and have unique cultural experiences specific to the country you visit. Safety, housing, and food has never been an issue when traveling with Therapy Abroad. They provide great communication and care for the students, supervisors, and facilitators. Reflecting back on my trip, I learned so much about speech therapy from my peers and supervisors. Working with kids at the Dulabhatorn Foundation in Thailand made me increase my love for this profession even more and in so thankful I was able to have such a wonderful experience.

  • Meeting new people
  • Experiencing a new culture
