Incredible experience!!

My time in Belize with Therapy Abroad was full of learning, growth, and fun! The people were incredibly friendly, the food was delicious, and the excursions (cave tubing, zip lining, snorkeling, Mayan ruins, etc) were a blast. The Therapy Abroad staff made sure we were well taken care of throughout the trip and did an amazing job coordinating our clinical experiences providing speech and language therapy. We had experience with all types of communication disorders and delays across the lifespan, from 14 months to 90 years old! I would work with them again in a heartbeat!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
On one of our clinical days, my group went to a local primary school to provide speech and language screenings for preschool and special education students. It was a daunting task - we had a lot of kids to see in a short amount of time, but it ended up being one of my favorite days of the trip. I learned so much about working with bilingual preschoolers and grew from speaking with their teachers. We ended up screening 90+ kiddos and had a great time!
Pros
  • Hands on clinical experiences
  • Amazing excursions
  • Reliable and friendly staff

Speech Therapy - Belize

Our university's trip to Belize was absolutely incredible! Justin and Jamie were amazing hosts and a great support system for all of us. We were all able to learn so much and improve our clinical skills while serving the community. The trip incorporated a great balance of work and play, and we got to do so many unique activities! I learned so much about both speech therapy and the culture in Belize. Overall, this trip has made me a stronger clinician and a better person, and I made memories that will last a lifetime!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The cave tubing was an amazing experience! We got to climb, swim, and jump off a cliff inside the cave! This activity was more adventurous than I was expecting, and I'm so thankful we got to do this!
Pros
  • Experiencing new places and activities
  • Learning about the culture
  • Gaining incredible clinical experiences

Speech Therapy Abroad - Belize

Jamie and Justin gave us the perfect combination of both work and play. We were given opportunities to snorkel, cave tube, and zipline which were all extraordinary. I was amazed by the culture we were introduced to and the children we were able to build speech and language skills with. Each night Jamie and Justin referred us to great places to dine and drink. We were constantly fed and transported to schools and health facilities within Belize. I was grateful for the opportunity to provide therapy to children in need. I would 100% do it all over again. Leaving Belize with a full heart!

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moment occurred while on our snorkeling boat in Caye Calker. My clinical educator was feeding sardines to a fish and ended up flinging the sardine towards me and my phone camera. It was hilarious.
Pros
  • Educational
  • Adventurous

100% best trip ever

I went with a group of graduate speech pathology students and it was the most amazing ten days. each day was thoughtfully planned, organized, and then executed by the Justin and Jamie, who organized our trip. There was never any question of safety, we got to stay at the best places, did some awesome fun and culturally immersive activities, there was never any issues with rides, and from a traveler/ students point of view, there were never any problems with our plans. I would absolutely do something like this again.

What was your funniest moment?
Our funniest moment was when a student was recording one of the professors feeding a fish and when the fish jumped up, our professor got scared and threw the fish at the student.
Pros
  • Low stress for the traveler
  • Great way to get new experiences
  • Safe way to travel to new countries

Review

Overall the trip was good. We got to experience some really cool things outside of the clinic blocks and had a lot of fun learning about the culture, clients and helping support these clients and future clinicians. We were a group of second year grad students so it was really cool to apply our learned knowledge to the clients.

One thing I wasn’t too big on were the pre-ordered meals out at the restaurants because I felt this restricted us in getting to try the cultural options that were available on the menu.

I did DM some things to the directors for some feedback as well :)

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
We got to experience the festival in Guatemala which was AMAZING! I’m so fortunate we got to experience that. Awesome addition to the trip.
Pros
  • Seeing 2 countries in 1 trip
  • Amazing staff
  • Getting to work with a different population.
Cons
  • Disorganization
  • Time schedules
  • Pre ordered meals
Response from Therapy Abroad

We appreciate the feedback! This is crucial information and we have already debriefed with your supervisors and have spoken with our team on the ground. We will address these concerns, especially concerning the client's goals and the SOAP notes. I have brought this up with Dr. Brock who is our academic director and he is going to personally oversee this documentation from now on until we see more consistency. Part of the disorganization might have been due to the fact that this is the start of the year and everyone was getting back into the swing of things, but regardless it will be addressed. I have also spoken to Justin about the meals to make sure there are more options available. You mentioned that some of the students might not have enjoyed the experience due to a lack of organization/communication. Can you email me to give me some more details about this so it can be addressed? Was the itinerary not accurate? I know Jamie tries very hard to make sure you each know what is going on every day and it seemed that was happening, but any details on the lack of organization and communication would be appreciated. I take this very seriously as does our whole team and we want to get it right! Thank you. -Chad

Belize

I had such a great experience! I learned so much about the culture of Belize and speech-language pathology. The faculty was amazing, as well as the group of girls; they truly made this experience that much better. We got hands-on experience with the kids and families, which was awesome. If you are looking for a resume builder, observation/clinical hours, or just a fun experience, this is the trip for you! Caye Caulker, at the end of the trip, was so much fun! Overall, it was such a fun/rewarding trip, and I would definitely do it again.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Come in with an open mind! I am a shy and introverted person and immediately felt comfortable. The staff always makes sure you are okay and have what you need.
Pros
  • Staff
  • Group
  • Food

Belize

I had a great time in Belize. The teachers/professors were very knowledgeable and helpful. They accepted feedback on how to help us and gave us great feedback that made a huge difference in our learning. Everyone was very helpful and supportive at Hode's Place and the food was great. I have food allergies and everyone did really well helping with that.
The accommodations were a bit tight with so many people to a room and only 1 bathroom. We managed well though.
I met some wonderful people and learned so much from everyone, including the other students. It was an amazing experience getting to help families that need this help and wouldn't get it otherwise.
Some of the organization and planning was well done and other parts were a bit last minute.
The excursions were amazing as well. Zip lining and snorkeling are something I will always remember and recommend to anyone else that goes to Belize.

Experience of a Life Time

getting to participate in Therapy Abroad was the highlight of my academic career and I am so happy I took the leap of faith and decided to go abroad. This program granted me with the opportunity to create life long friends, learn about cultural differences and experiences, learn so much from colleagues and advisors, and finally apply what i’ve learned in the academic setting, into real life application! this program changed my life and I flew home a better person. ABSOLUTELY would reccomend !!!!

What would you improve about this program?
none of us knew anything going in. It made it difficult because we didn’t know what was happening, what we’d do or anything of that sorts. moving forward I would love more information and a huge debriefing at the beginning of our program
Pros
  • great people
  • great food
  • great experience
Cons
  • left in the dark about things
  • a little last minute planning
  • nothing else

Therapy Abroad-Belize

This program is amazing if you want to learn more while having fun. You get to learn from amazing faculty and the staff are very attentive and supportive to your every need. One thing I would change is the scheduling. Some days were so packed we were left feeling drained. Also things were added so last minute that it kept throwing us off. Also the lack of communication on the details of the excursions and trips made it difficult to prepare at times. We would also like more independence when choosing meals because some times it felt like we weren’t given much choice or options. It’s definitely tiring but, worth it in the end for the experience.

Belize-> caye caulker

San Ignacio was absolutely amazing and beautiful!! Mr. Lewis and Mr. Eddie were so informative and made sure we were safe at all times. Our supervisors really made our time here enjoyable and they made sure we leaned a lot. I feel more confident in myself and the group of girls on this trip were so supportive. Being open to new things not just food but also excursions. As one of our supervisors said “You grow when you’re uncomfortable”. It is the perfect length of time to go because as the trip comes to an end everyone was getting a little home sick. This was such a great experience and I highly recommend studying abroad even if it’s for only 2 weeks it is life changing.

What would you improve about this program?
Having a more informative schedule where we understand what is happening but also have a little down time to recuperate.
Pros
  • The food was so yummy
  • The camp was so rewarding and getting to interact with the families
  • The different types of excursions we were able to experience
Cons
  • Not knowing what was going to happen next
  • No down time (especially in caye caulker. We enjoyed snorkeling but if we were able to have breakfast at 8 and then snorkeling at 9:30)
