amazing and unforgettable

I just got back from my trip and it was the most memorable, inspiring, and beautiful trip I have ever been on. Being able to learn the beautiful culture, teach english to students who are so eager to learn, and help the community by helping to build a school is something I will take with me forever. Everybody is beyond welcoming and it was the most heartwarming experience. I can’t wait to come back and do this trip again as well as other trips GIVE hosts! This is truly a trip of a lifetime!!!!!!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
the most nerve racking moment was getting off the plane since this was my first solo trip out of my home country. my nerves quickly went away when i saw the local guides waiting for me outside of the airport. they were so welcoming!!

Give Thailand

Thailand was a life changing experience for me. I was able to get out of my comfort zone while also meeting like minded people and volunteering for important causes. The small hill tribes and local guides were the kindest people and it was very special getting immersed into their culture and learning their way of life. I made very special connections with the students that we taught and it was amazing to see their hard work and love for learning. Also learning how to be a global citizen and making a positive impact on our earth was special when doing things like working in the permaculture lot. Overall this trip was so special and eye opening and I plan to do more trips with Give in the future!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing we did was when we had to hike through the jungle to find the elephant. Going into it I assumed that we would drive to a place where there was an elephant (like a zoo). Instead we hiked through the jungle and we did not know when we would find her but when we did it was so special and worth it. After we found her we also got to hike back with her which was an amazing experience.
Pros
  • Connections made with staff, other volunteers, and locals.
  • Volunteering for the local school and working on the permaculture lot.
  • Being immersed into the culture.

Life changing

This experience went above and beyond what I could have ever imagined! The support I got from the team was outstanding. Every question big or small was answered within 24 hours before my trip. Whilst I was on the trip all the local guides made sure I was safe at all times without putting a damper on the fun. It was the perfect balance of work and play. If I wasn’t feeling confident in some of the teaching, the locals were there to help translate or support my ideas. Construction was hard work but fun. Water breaks consisted of fun games made by the locals, mangos, jackfruit and lots and lots of laughs and dancing. This trip has pushed me outside my comfort zone and changed me as a person. Every second of the day was packed with fun, culture and relaxation and most of all Hannah who what we needed and when. With nothing being forced on us!
This truly was a trip of my dreams and I can say Cairo and Zanzibar is my home. Not only do I say that but each and everyone of them have assured me I am always welcome back!!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Jump straight in with two feet and trust that the team have your back at all times and trust you won’t be judged but instead you’ll be encouraged and I imagine if you’re being goofy, the team will join in
Pros
  • Making new like minded solo travellers
  • Building my confidence in myself
  • Changing my perspective on life and how I should be living it everyday
Cons
  • I honestly don’t think there are any cons besides the fact I wish it was longer

First time out of the United States!

Like in my title this was my first trip out of the United States. Many of my family and friends were worried that I chose such a remote and far away place to be my first international trip but I cannot stress enough how perfect this was for my first time out of the country!! I was constantly given reminders through give on keeping up with papers (passport, visa, vaccinations ect.) which helped me a lot to understand what I needed to do and in a timely manner. They also even have a travel agent as an option to help with flights which I loved to lessen my stress. Even when I did have a flight cancellation due to weather I was able to easily figure it out and had Give staff leader, Hannah, also helping me if I were to need any extra assistance. Once arrived I was a bit nervous not having any service but Give staff was there to pick me up and greet me! I also loved not having to worry about accommodations and food as that was all included! It really allows you to be able to relax and take in the beautiful place of stone town when not having to try and search around. When we arrived in Kairo I was so excited to see how close we were to the Indian Ocean!! It was paradise!

Our days of education and construction were always well planned out in advance and so it was easy to get in a bit of a groove. Those days were also very rewarding to see the progress in the students (including myself as I learned a lot from them too) and in the construction you will do at the school. Some days were very hard during construction but the energy with the staff and our group made every minute of it worth it! And to know that the kids at that school will be able to use the pathway we created for years to come.

Outside of education and construction there were so many activities planned that I had not known about so it was such a cool surprise to be able to learn Swahili, weave, cook and see how soap is made by the local women!

Adventure days were amazing! Coming from a land locked state it was so cool to be able to be at the beach, on an island or always having time to swim in the ocean! Even on these days you learn so much about Zanzibar and their culture as well. Always ask questions! Staff were always so sweet to answer my questions I had and they welcomed them all the time.

One of the coolest experiences I have now to date would be swimming with wild dolphins! I am such an animals lover and seeing how the locals have turned their attention to protecting the dolphins while also still being able to support their loved ones amazes me.

Overall I can’t express how amazing this trip was for me and how it has created such confidence in myself in my future travels and how they can align to my beliefs. They did an amazing job and I hope to be back again soon!

Book the trip!! You won’t regret it! :)

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
For this being my first time out of the country their were a lot of surprises to me at first but with discussions we had and the ability to ask questions I soon leaned so much about a culture I never even had heard about before finding this trip. Overall I think a couple things that surprised me was how open the community of Kairo was to strangers, how creative and resourceful the locals were (knowing when the tides would go out to collect seaweed, the beautiful jewelry, paintings and hand crafts they made). And lastly the most surprising thing I did was cooking with the local women. I didn’t expect to be able to do that and to see how they cook such delicious meals was very interesting to me!
Pros
  • You will make so many friends and amazing memories.
  • THE FOOD!
  • All the activities that were planned and so well organized.
Cons
  • Sometimes the power and water would go out but it never bothered me as the ocean was right there to take a dip and hang out!
  • I wasn’t use to the heat at first so it took me some time to get use to it and be able to sleep.

The BEST Experience Of My Life

My GIVE trip to Tanzania was life-changing, challenging, and inspiring. The guides are knowledgeable and personable. The locals are kind, fun, and so eager to learn AND share. This program does an exceptional job of immersing you in the culture of your destination and teaching valuable lessons, while also incorporating some of the most thrilling adventures. I highly recommend this trip (or any GIVE trip) to anyone who is looking to travel responsibly, expand their horizons, and push themselves out of their comfort zone.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Standing up in front of a class of adults and knowing it is your responsibility to teach them English can definitely be nerve-racking at first. It takes some getting used to. BUT you will quickly realize that these people are kind, loving, patient, and eager to learn. They are not judging you... They are grateful you are there.
Pros
  • Immerse yourself in the culture
  • Get to know the locals
Cons
  • No AC in accommodations!

Incredible experience!

It’s hard to explain with words what we lived in Tanzania. The feeling of teaching for the first time, specially while having such kind students and see their eager to learn is fulfilling. Besides, making what we call “memory” in that school, by helping in the construction, gives us a sense of humanity. But the truth is that I went there to help other, and very soon I realized I was the one that needed help. I came back home as a different person with different perspectives, and that’s what makes me feel alive.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Undoubtedly the Maasai presentation in the last day of school was one of the most incredible things I’ve seen in my life
Pros
  • The organization and the support we receive are impeccable
  • I felt completely safe all the time
  • The discussions we have in the evenings are totally necessary
Cons
  • There could be more protein and vegetables and less carbs in the food
  • We could have stayed in better places on the way to the safari

Indescribably incredible

The experiences I had there were like no other in my life. I went there to help people, but very soon I realized I was the one that needed help! I’m back home with a feeling of fulfillment and excitement and with a new perspective of life. Getting out of our comfort zone and embracing a new culture is the best way to improve ourselves as human beings, and choosing not to be ignorant about the world’s reality and being around different environments is exactly what makes me feel alive. I’m beyond grateful to GIVE for providing this experience to me.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The Maasai presentation was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen in my life.
Pros
  • The organization is impeccable
  • We’re always fully respected and taken cared of
  • We always have discussions about important topics
Cons
  • There could be less carbs and more protein and salad in meals
  • Sometimes the places we stayed weren’t comfortable
  • The pictures we share in the end aren’t in good quality

Trip of a Lifetime

This experience with GIVE was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to travel the world making an impactful change. From the second I left the airport the staff immediately made me feel at home. Even though I was on the other side of the world I never once felt uneasy about safety, the people around me, or that I would be on my own. The accommodations were always well kept and comfortable. And the food was good. Though there wasn’t much variety we got to try some local cuisines which was such a cool experience. Our guides both local and non-local were AMAZING. Always wanting to share more about the country and the culture. They were supportive, kind, and extremely bubbly. Without them the trip wouldn’t have been the same. Picking GIVE to go on this trip with was never once questioned while I was there. I made friendships and memories that will last a lifetime and a new appreciation for travel and adventure. The communities we spent time in were so excited to have us there and you could tell we’re grateful for our support. Being there you could tell how much they all loved GIVE as an organization and the people apart of it. You could also see how GIVE changed the staff and guides in ways I never would’ve imagined. This trip showed me how supporting communities and “voting with your dollar” can make changes while traveling and is something I will carry on in my own traveling endeavors. I would recommend this experience to anyone wanting to travel solo, with a group, or with a friend/family. You will leave with a changed perspective and bonds that will last forever. I’m incredibly thankful I decided to choose GIVE everyday.

What was your funniest moment?
Forming connections and making friendships was such an amazing part about this trip. My funniest moments will always be little inside jokes the group and I share. Or when we allowed one of the staff to read our itinerary board before bed and cracking up at his jokes.
Pros
  • Feeled at home and truly like apart of the community
  • Staff and guides were so welcoming and friendly. Truly radiated happiness
  • Friendships that will last a lifetime
Cons
  • Not a ton of connection unless you pay for an international plan. So contacting home can be hard especially if you feel homesick
  • Not a ton of variety in foods. They accommodate extremely well to people’s needs but lack a ton of diversity in foods
  • SUPER HOT if you go in the summer time. And aren’t used to that kind of heat. If you don’t do well without AC I’d recommend a trip during there winter so our summer.

Trip of a Lifetime

This trip was something I chose to do on a whim, try something new and get out of my comfort zone. I feel everyone would be a little skeptical about doing something like this, and even up to the point I got there I had my reservations. But that all changed when I landed and met the guides. They immediately were the most friendly and welcoming people, and that never let up. Throughout the entire trip everyone was super friendly and helpful, and would stop everything they were doing to help you at the drop of a hat. Everything was well thought out down to them asking you to remove packaging on anything you might have and dispose of it before you get into the country. The opportunities given were fantastic, having the opportunity to learn the language, learn the culture, learn some crafts from the locals, and learn peoples thoughts about life there. Not only was there a chance to learn about them you also learn a lot about yourself, getting out of your comfort zone and dealing with a vastly different culture and way of life helps put things into perspective. Even the experiences we got to have such as going on a sailboat and watching the sunset or snorkeling with dolphins helped give back to the local communities. Truly everything was thought out. From Yoga and morning swims to the construction process of the school, there was not one thing that I felt wasn't thought out. This was the best experience I've ever had. Make it yours too.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Let your guard down, experience everything in the moment. Not everything is going to be comfortable. But everything will be worth it. Live life in the moment.
Pros
  • Thoughtfulness
  • Experiences
  • Impact
Cons
  • Not long enough
